Where Am I?

Ugh. I feel like shit.
I slept eleven hours. I woke up, looked at my phone to check the time and almost passed out to see it was after ten. It's all Maurice's fault. She didn't wake me up. She just laid there with me, cuddled up and asleep.
Anyway, the universe is abundant and I have absolutely no obligations today. But it's so weird- it's already noon and where is the day going and it's growing dark outside and there may be rain or there may not be and we may get a hurricane next week and we may not and I'm too old to waste an entire day of doing nothing.
I swear. I feel that way. But the walk out to the hen house about did me in.

Mr. Moon will be home tomorrow. There does not look to be a pair of gator-hide boots in my near future which is fine with me. I hope he's had a good time anyway. I keep thinking of how it must have looked last night with that moon shining down through the moss-draped cypress trees, shining off the black night time waters of the creeks and rivers. Another world entirely, and a beautiful one. We talk about parallel universes but all you have to do is trade day for night or slip underneath a few inches of water with a snorkel and a mask and you are in a completely different universe, right here, right now.
I ponder that.
It pleases me.

All right. That's all I have in me. I suppose I will finish up "Go Set A Watchman."
I am sorry, I do not recommend it.
That's all I have to say about that.
I wanted to like it.
I could not. Maybe because it cuts too close to the bone of what I remember as the attitude of so many whites about people of color in the early sixties.
And now, for that fucking matter.

Happy Friday, y'all.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Feel better, dear Mary. Reading is a fine occupation and does not constitute doing nothing with your day.

  2. I hope you feel better soon. I'm glad you could sleep and hope that a nap is in your plans today, too.

  3. My first thought was that if you read all day you haven't done nothing! Thanks for the heads up on Go Set A Watchman. I was afraid it would disappoint.

Yes, there are a million universes right here on earth, aren't there? Last night I thought the sunset was sublime and enjoyed it immensely and I'm so glad I stopped rushing around to look.

It's good to be home, but there is too much to do. I just keep weeding where I'm standing :) Hopefully I can visit a bit more online now that the nest is empty. I miss them but I'm surprisingly ok with everything. Who knew?

Hope you're all well again soon. Also, so excited about the pending new additions to your family!

  4. We all need a "do nothing day" once in a while. :-)

  5. Mary, I wish I knew more about how Watchman came to be published. I think the most salient fact is her sister and protector, Alice Lee, died. Harper, I understand is unable to speak and suffering, at least, dementia. I think it's a question of "follow the money."
On the other hand, while Watchman is the racial attitude of the day, I think the two books as a whole demonstrate Harper's ability to reassess what may have happened. If, as is speculated, Alice forms most of Atticus' persona in the book....
Well, enough. I too think it should not have been published. But since it has been, we can deal with it.

  6. Your remark about other worlds and snorkeling makes me think about a wonderful interview I heard with the oceanographer Sylvia Earle, whose nickname is Her Deepness...

  7. I read an article on it that really told me all I needed to know, I think, about whether or not to read it. So, along with the suggestions that the elderly Harper Lee is being exploited, I think I'll just leave it alone. To Kill A Mockingbird grew out of it, and it's the book to read, by the sound of things. I'm glad to hear you corroborate that!

If you're a bit sick, then sleeping 11 hours is what your body needed!

  8. Others already made the point about the value of reading, so there's that. I will probably try "Go Set a Watchman" but I am prepared for it to disappoint. There's a reason they didn't publish it 50 years ago, after all.

Tell me, sweeties. Tell me what you think.
