Web Log, Entry One Billion

Well Mother did not cry but she did tell the doctor that her profession had been teaching swimming which I found most interesting in that yes, she did teach swimming at Girl Scout camp when she was a Girl Scout but for most of her life she taught grade school and I think she never did like that one bit but loved the swimming instruction and there you go- do what you love if you can because that's what you'll remember.

It's been a good, full day, and Owen was here for a good, long time and when Kathleen came over he was out in the yard in my red wedgies and that boy can rock a red shoe! "Come on!" he says and we follow wherever he wants to go, to the garage, the chickens, the goats. "Come on!" he says and I follow him anywhere. The mule next door was not apparent this morning but was back this afternoon and he was overjoyed. "Back!" he shouted and then "Five!" and we had to high-five over the miraculous reappearance of the mule. He feeds his bouncy horse whatever he is eating, holding it up to the horse's mouth and then he strokes the horses head and says, "Good boy!" and my heart melts.

Good boy. He is such a good boy and I came in from taking Mother to her appointment to find him and Mr. Moon asleep on the bed together and my heart melted again. He is loving books and letting me read him new ones and one of his favorite new ones is one that Bethany sent to him. The Little Red Hen Makes A Pizza and it's delightful and the pictures are hysterical and he loves it. He is also listening to The Cat In The Hat and here we go- rhythm and rhyme and that poor fish who could be my doppelganger- NO! Do not let that cat in! Mother is out and she would not like this! and the children are at the cat's mercy and I've never really liked the Cat In The Hat, not my favorite but it's so fun to read and if I have any talent at acting it is from reading children's books out loud for so many years and I had despaired at never having that opportunity again, yet here I am.

Here I am.

Another cool evening and supper is almost ready and I don't know what the universe is going to hand us next but for right now, this second, it has handed me joy and simple pleasure beyond measure and that is what I shall cling to, that is what I shall sleep on, that is what I shall enjoy as it is here now, right this second, this day, this time, this tiny slice of a life.

  1. So glad you had a good day, MerMer.

I have had a good one too and exuding gratitude for both of us.
Your last paragraph says it all....it's the big secret everyone is always looking for......even me when I sometimes forget.

  2. I plagued my mother with wanting Fox in Socks read aloud. She still groans whenever the subject of Slow Joe Crow comes up. Ain't I a stinker? (she said with a grin).

And I myself still get "Chicka-chicka-boom-boom! Will there be enough room?" and I can't believe my niece is sixteen years old...

  3. One Hungry Monster is a great book. Joey laughs and laughs at it. Owen would love it. It's by Susan Heyboer O'Keefe.

  4. Oh that darling boy. That's thing one.
And I love your blog. That's thing two.

  5. As a mom, I don't relish the idea of my kids letting a large cat-man into the house while I'm gone, but Seuss is hard to beat for rhythm and rhyme.

When I was a kid it was Horton Hears a Who. Over and over again. My mom still blurts out lines from that out of the blue every once in a while.

  6. Love hearing about your excellent tiny slices of life. Hope the universe sends good, positive days your way for a long time. Enjoy the weekend and I think I might have to check out a few of those books for Kyle.

  7. I loved "Are you my mother?" by Seuss....guess even then I wondered about mothers....

One of my greatest joys was reading to my kids and getting into the characters and how I thought their voice might sound.

  8. I like those Owen words. Glad that your mother didn't cry. It sounds as if she is re-inventing herself. My mother did that as well. I let her.

  9. He is just so darling, as Denise says.

And I just want you to know that I have long fancied myself a supreme reader of children's books and that I so miss doing so -- my boys are a bit too old now for that sort of thing and it makes me a little sad.

  10. My mom always cried when my kids cried at the doctor. She cried hardest when she was playing peek-a-boo with my son and he ran away and hit a wall and wailed. My mom sobbed and I had to console both of them at the same time.
    I love Grandma's and Nana's and Mer-Mer's.

  11. When my son was young his favorite book was Green Eggs and Ham. We must have read it a million times.

Glad to hear it went well with your mom at the doctor's.

  12. I would definitely give Owen "Five!" if given the chance! This post gave me a warm cozy feeling. :)

  13. The book Bethany sent Owen sounds great. I'd like to read it myself.

Glad the Moms didn't cry at the doctor. You are right about the jobs we love. I say I am a bartender still, though I make my living through the drudgery of technical writing/editing. I bartended for the years right after college while I looked for my niche in life. Most fun job I ever had. Nobody is EVER sorry to see a bartender or a fireman, and the talent is quite portable. I could bartend in any country.

    Love you!

  14. Lo- It's easier to remember than to feel. Don't you think?

    Towanda- Then...happiness.

x-ray Iris- Yes, there are other Dr. Seuss that we shall bring out now. Ones I like better.

    Rebecca- I'll look for it.

Denise- In this case, Thing One and Thing Two are not so creepy. Thank-you, dear.

    Stephanie- That's a good one!

    Mr. Shife- Excellent!

Ellen- Oh, that one is already a favorite.

Syd- I did not correct my mother, either. Why would I even want to? It makes her happy to think that her profession was teaching swimming.

Elizabeth- With Jessie I dragged it out for years. She would do my hair and I would read Harry Potter to her. Some of the best times of my life.

Birdie- For some reason, it is even harder to see your grandchild upset than your child. Or maybe not. Maybe it's just that we feel freer to show it.

Angie- Oh, that's a good one too! I think Owen will like that. He DOES eat green eggs, in fact.

Ms. Fleur- Can you believe this weather?

Jill- Aw. And he likes to "bump" glasses too. He refuses to say "toast!" but says "bump."

Ms. Bastard-Beloved- Hell. Maybe you should STILL be a bartender. You'd be a lot less stressed out, I think. But whatever you are, I love you.
