Lazy Day

And here we have Miss Pecky who is proving her name by eating beans directly from the vine as she perches on the fence post of the garden. She is welcome to eat all of the beans she wants but when my lettuces and greens have been planted and have started coming up, I am going to be most unhappy if she and her sisters go after them.

Pinto and Eggy Nancy

Chickens can definitely fly but they don't seem to realize it until they do it and once they've done it in order to fulfill a goal, they seem to remember. And oh, how they love sweet baby collards!

I had a hard time sleeping last night. I was tired but sleep was elusive and then, after I did surrender to it, I woke up around three and was awake until after four. Jack was with me but he didn't really bother me. I don't know what was keeping me awake. My ribs did ache and I think I've done too much the last few days. Or at least, too much of the wrong things.
Same-same?
I have no idea.
But today I have done very little. I've been tired and so I've rested and shelled the last of the peas that Mr. Moon picked yesterday. I've got them in a pot now with the ham bone from Easter which I pulled from the freezer this morning.

There are two different types of field peas there and don't ask me what they are. I'm not sure. The brown ones are the ones that had dried on the vine but they'll plump back up and will be as good as the green ones. It's going to be a simple meal. I started a loaf of sourdough yesterday and it's almost finished with its final rise and so there will be that and a salad and that is enough.

The wild yeast of Lloyd is still raising up bread on its mighty shoulders.

Mr. Moon's been gone all day to do some work at Hank and Rachel's. There was screening to fix on their back porch and he wanted to pressure wash the place. I'm sure he'll be exhausted when he gets home but he can sit in his chair until bedtime when he will generously and graciously give it up to me. It's still seems very odd to me to sleep in a different room from him. We can see each other's lights from windows and I know when he's turned his off to go to sleep. I feel like I'm a million miles away rather than just a few rooms away and still, every time I wake up I have to take a second to orient myself as to where I am and where he is. I don't like this. I don't like it at all but it seems necessary.

And now he's home. The oven is heating up to receive the bread. The field peas are simmering nicely. I love meals that are served in bowls with bread on a plate beside them.

Tomorrow we will put on our masks and go vote in the primary at the local Baptist church.
I will NOT be voting for Karen Purser.
Trust me.
I'm pretty sure that God told me not to.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. lordy, the woman who tainted your day by showing up unannounced with her *agenda*at your door. NO! One bowl meals and bread are perfect and your hens are smarties! Pick and eat the beans so Mary doesn't have to! Hope you sleep better.......won't be long and you will be back next to Mr Moon. I think you are close to being there

  2. Hello,
It's been ages since I've caught up with you. I am so sorry to see that you hurt yourself but happy that you are healing. I love everything you write and love your sense of humor. And totally agree with your assessment of the idiot in office. If I lived near you, I would bring you a small gift and visit with you. Stay safe and well.

  4. I hope you take a picture of that soup in the bowl, or the left over container. I cannot imagine it. Is it thick and green like split green pea soup? OMG, my ignorance is hanging out all over. I make "split pea soup", which is ham bone and water and split peas, which are dried peas, and when cooked are thick green slush that no one but no one in the family likes except me, and I can just sit at the table and send down spoon after wonderful spoonful until my tummy creaks. You can bet your local Baptist church on that.

    1. No, no. We just eat the beans in their hammy broth. You can eat them over rice, of course, but since I just made bread I decided that it would do. I love split pea soup too.
The bean/pea thing is confusing. I guess that our "field peas" are actually beans. Like, uh, I was going to say black-eyed peas! Haha! Anyway, we just eat them whole. Sweet and tender.

    1. To everything there is a season...
I think it's your season to sit back and rest a little, Ellen. I do love pinto beans. They are my favorite.

  7. Hope you are soon able to rest comfortably at night by Mr Moon.

You have Miss Pecky. I've got squirrels and cardinals. Between them, my cherry and grape tomato plants (in containers on the deck) have been denuded of their crop. Actually not complaining too much because so many of them have split due to horrendous amounts of rain here, so they are welcome to them. If they would just take the whole thing and not leave me with their remnants.

    1. I hear you- messy critters. The squirrels love to take one bite out of our pecans and throw them to the ground. Gee, thanks!

  8. My mail-in primary ballot HAS arrived and been counted, according to the supervisor of elections in Tampa. Let's hope voting in the general goes as smoothly.

That dinner looks great. It's very summery -- soup and salad and bread. That's about all you need when it's hot out.

Those chickens are all beautiful, aren't they? I love their coloring!

    1. That is great news, Steve! We just went and voted and there was more to it than just showing up because we'd ordered mail-in ballots too. Long story. But all is well.
      Our supper was delicious.
Sometimes after I've given the chickens their scratch in the morning I just hang out and watch them for awhile. They bring me so much pleasure.
