It was such a fun birthday luncheon with this little goof ball. Just...sweetness. Vergil grilled some burgers and squash and zucchini (is that redundant?) and there was potato salad and cole slaw and beans, guacamole, chips, salsa, and my personal favorite- pimento cheese!
And cup cakes.
The babies played with each other. Or, played next to each other. Or taunted each other with chips.
Or, sat on each other.
(Possibly best picture ever taken.)
Okay. Only Maggie sat on August. Poor August. His little cousin is already dominating him. And is bigger than he is. And seems to completely bewilder him. But he had his moments in the limelight.
He was perfectly cool when it came time for his candle and his birthday song.
Here he is playing one of his favorite games. You put something on your head and pretend to sneeze and the thing on your head falls off. Hilarious laughter ensues.
The sweet family.
And his new doll. When Owen saw it, he said, "Look! August got his own brother!"
Speaking of Owen, here he is with with his daddy and his adoring sister. She loves her brothers more than anything on this earth. Well, except maybe for her daddy and mommy. She seems to like them too.
So it was just practically perfect. It would have been better if May and Michael could have come but they were working.
Sigh.
I kept refusing offers of a beer while I was there because as I said, I had to come home and shovel mushroom compost. And then what happened when I got home?
I got on the bed and stretched out in the cool with my book and read for a little while and then took a heavenly nap. When I got up, I did go out into the garden and picked peppers.
I swear to god, y'all. It took me forty-five minutes to pick those peppers. But it wasn't very strenuous labor, I have to admit.
Oh well. I can shovel compost tomorrow. Right?
And here's my pinecone lilies.
At least I kept one of my promises.
I do my best.

Are you kidding me?
Brilliant grandchildren. Just brilliant.
You guys, you kill me. So cute.
ReplyDeleteWe kill me too. Sometimes from cuteness. Sometimes from funny.
DeleteAugust looks like he was thoroughly charmed by his party. Such sweetness all around. And look at him sitting up and "reading" the book with his mom! A booklover in the making. Glad it was a happy family gathering and that you took it a little easy on yourself today. x0 N2
ReplyDeleteAugust loves his books. Especially the ones that have something in them to manipulate. They make such clever ones these days. He really did seem to have a good time! It was so low key and sweet.
DeleteWhat lovely family photos. Yes, your grands are simply brilliant. And Jessie wears motherhood so serenely.
ReplyDeleteMy girls knock me out with their abilities to mother so naturally. I really wish I could claim that they got it all from me but no, they did not. It seems to be innate within them.
DeleteI do enjoy your family pictures. You have such an awesome family.
ReplyDeleteI was close to being an adult before I didn't have to pause when figuring out the difference between left and right. Finally someone showed me that the left hand makes an L when held up with the thumb out.
My friend Lynn taught me that when I was an adult! I had never thought of it before! I'm not sure that Gibson can distinguish "L's" yet, but he might be able to. He keeps shocking me with what he knows.
DeleteBeautiful family story and photos. That August is adorable and Maggie is so sweet. I'm glad Owen is feeling better.
ReplyDeleteMaggie is sweet and she is the boss. I, am so glad that Owen is feeling better. My little prince.
Deletepinecone lilies! it's a ginger right? my sister and I saw some at an estate sale a couple of weeks ago. I'd never seen them before. if we'd been able, and by that I mean were out of sight, we would have tried to pull one up.
ReplyDeleteYeah. I think it's a ginger. I'm sure they'd grow where you are. I wonder if I could send you a few tubers? I don't see why not.
DeleteThat picture of Maggie sitting on August is precious... the look on his face ! I'd say she's got the upper hand...so cute.
ReplyDeleteI've never had pimento cheese...I just have to try it one of these days. It sounds so good.
Looks like August had fun on his special day !
I think that picture of Maggie sitting on August is my favorite baby picture ever. That hand on his head! Oh my god!
DeleteYou can make pimento cheese easily. Just grate some good cheddar and mix with some jar cut-up pimentos and mayonnaise. That's the basic recipe.
Happy Birthday party to August! 1 is such a sweet age. So much wonder. Your peppers are beautiful. We just started our thai chilis and cheyenne pepper this year and have made a few that look like your jar and some hot sauce. They do take FOREVER to pick! Do you make you make your own pimento cheese or have a brand favorite. I started making my own about a month ago and looking for ideas!
ReplyDeleteThe good thing is, that bottle of pepper vinegar will last for years if I just keep adding vinegar to it. And of course I will.
DeleteI don't have a favorite brand. Costco sells some good stuff and sometimes I do make it- see the comment I left above. That's basically how I do it, although sometimes I add garlic powder.
That photo of Maggie on August IS definitely the greatest online photo ever!
ReplyDeleteThose pinecone lilies are beautiful. I appreciate getting to see them here. Thank you for sharing each year.
