I believe I just used up the last store-bought egg I will be using in a long, long time. Eight of those eggs came just from yesterday and today's gathering. Oh my. My hens are gettin' busy.
Mel- Can you see the different colors? Each hen lays her own color. They may be similar (well, except for Miss Mable's brown ones) but they are different.
I wonder - do they taste different, too? Maybe after a year or so you'll be using the tastiest eggs for your omelettes and then other ones for cakes, because you know which ones you prefer the taste of.
Angie- They're just like other eggs, only fresher and nicer. With thicker shells, yellower yolks, and thicker whites.
Joy- I know. I just want to keep them around in glass bowls.
Mwa- I don't think they taste different. The shell color doesn't really affect taste. Not that I can tell, anyway.
DTG- Soon, my son. Soon. I mean, if I'm getting four a day now? Wow. When those younger hens kick in, it's going to be crazy. I'm going to need another refrigerator.
Ms. Moon, those are a beautiful sight. You are making me envious. We live at the center of our town and unfortunately legally cannot have chickens. Even if we could, I'm not sure we would be able to. We have a terrier(Nicholas) and a greyhound(Katie) and I think they would kill any fowl we kept. I'll have to live vicariously through you. Thanks for sharing the egg picture.
Kyle- Those eggs just satisfy my soul as do the chickens. I feel sorry for anyone who can't keep chickens. And I never knew how lovely it was until this year! I have four dogs and they are kept well away from my birds. I am lucky to have a yard big enough for this and a fella who builds strong coops.
Lovely sight. I was so excited when we had 5 eggs on the first day our chickens arrived! So many eggs, so many recipes, so little time. I read up that it's the ear colour which defines the colour of the egg... and there is no comparison to shop-bought eggs! x
That is true beauty, Ms. Moon.
ReplyDeleteYou sure do know how to raise 'em up nice.

ReplyDeleteI'm embarrassed to say I don't think I've ever had fresh from the hen eggs.
ReplyDeleteThey are doing so well! Fresh eggs are so much better, and your happy hens are providing! They are so pretty, too.
ReplyDeleteAh,Ms. Moon, the very stuff of life, and beautiful, too!

The different shades and colors of those eggs are gorgeous. I didn't know chicken eggs even came in some of those colors. Wow.

ReplyDeleteMs. Lilac- EAR color?! Chickens have ears? And I had heard leg color but I am not finding that to be so true.
ReplyDeleteSuccess!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHave you noticed the yellow of a fresh egg versus a store egg is different in color?
ReplyDeleteMarsha- They are darker yellow.
ReplyDeleteYes, the round disc shape just by their eyes is their outer ear... I'll see if I can send you something :) x
