Partial Explanation

Okay. That new word verification thing which we already all hate? Here's a partial explanation that you can read if you click on the damn ? button to the left of it.

I had heard about this before, this verification thing which was a way to help decipher old texts and I think it's sort of cool, really. Which does not mean I am thrilled about it. I am thinking (THINKING) of going to blog-owner approval but I like my commenter's words to be available immediately.

What are you thinking?

  1. I'm with you here Ms Moon. It's so unbelievably tedious to decipher these letters, however helpful t might be to those who struggle with these old texts. I usually have to have at least two or three tries, and sometimes I want to give up. My punt and hope is that it doesn't last. It's a joy to leave comments but not to have to go through a terrible process of confusion simply to send them.

  2. I had to go to owner approval a while ago...I was getting too damn annoyed at Chinese spam showing up all the time..I didn't know about the word verification thing though, that's pretty damn cool!

  4. I undid wv when they changed how they worked things - no my spam comments go to the Spam file in my blog, I never see them unless I go look, and they also go straight to my gmail Spam file so I don't see them there either. Have a check around your blog settings and see if you can stop them going to your email, then you could let it all take care of itself and not worry about wv?

It's nice they're using old words, but they make them very hard to see...

  5. Are you getting spam? I've found that the word verification usually gets rid of the spam, but I don't have as big a following as you do.

Either way, I'm not real sure I understand, but if you are talking about doing what Maggie does on her comments, I don't see the prob if that's what you want.

  6. I think there's an adjustment period with these things and we'll be fine with the word verification stuff. I say no to comment moderation :)

  7. Comment approval kills conversations. I say leave it. Does everyone know that if you hit the little refresh circle next to the entry box on that word verification form, it will give you two new words? I just hit it until the words are clear to read and type them in.

  8. Wow, that's good to know downtown guy. I had no idea. It usually takes me 3 or 4 tries to get the words right and it is frustrating for me. Personally, I like blog owner moderation on my blog but I'm on the computer most of the time and don't think comments I receive "sit" there for too very long. As a commenter I'm find with the moderation also. For me, it's better than trying to decipher those weird ass words. Plus, I'm skeptical about the old text thing.

  9. I'm skeptical about the old text thing too. I prefer deciphering the words instead of moderation.

  10. just read in the NYT that the capcha (or whatever the verify is called) really does help with transcriptions.

  11. That whole "old text decipering" thing may very well be true, and I'm sure it is...but it just seems, well, odd to me. It is truly the last thing I would have ever guessed they were doing!

  12. I totally dislike having to do word verification. There is no need if there is comment moderation which is how I have had my blog for several years. Commenting on blogs takes time and when those damn words slow things down, well, it is just a pain. Sorry to be cranky about this. But it sucketh to me.

  13. I hate it too, but this changes it for me. I think it's SO COOL that they're doing this!

You've rocked my world with this news.

  14. Now i can live with it since I know the explanation now, but it is a pain to read. I often have to go for a second word because the first one is not doable. But I suppose it's a small fee to pay for enjoying your blog.

  15. I don't like comment approval. I like being able to see my comment right away, and like DTG said that helps with conversations. I don't mind word verification at all.
