Why I Am Not A Professional Movie Reviewer

It is Sunday morning, we've eaten our pancakes on the clean and de-cluttered back porch, the sun, the sun, the beautiful sun is out again, it's a bit chilly and the growly, chugging, burping sound of the pressure washer is again heard in the land.
And instead of roses and tea olives, all I smell is bleach.
Sigh.
It must be done.

So we watched that movie last night. Get Low.

It was not bad. Robert Duvall reined in his usual Robert Duvallness (and don't get me wrong- I adore the man and his acting) and it was a more restrained performance than I think I've ever seen him give. He didn't get to use his usual bag of tricks to charm and delight and what was cut away and discarded left the tender bare bone.
Bill Murray played a funeral director and either that casting was genius or incredibly misguided and I go with genius. But you know me.
Okay- here's a problem I had with the casting. They cast Sissy Spacek as the widow with whom the Robert Duvall character had "had a go with" back in the olden days and yet, in all actuality, Ms. Spacek is almost twenty years younger than Duvall and only one year older than Murray.
Look, Sissy Spacek can play anyone at any age and I'll buy it. She can do anything, but really?
Oh well, petty, petty and at least they didn't cast Anne Hathaway or something like that. Do you remember when they cast Anne Heche opposite Harrison Ford in Six Days, Seven Nights? That was severely wrong whereas casting Sissy Spacek opposite Robert Duvall as his contemporary was merely a little annoying if you're a woman. I was gratified to see that Sissy's neck is doing the same thing mine is but she is five years older than I am so I suppose I am being prematurely gratified as well as prematurely aging.

But it was a beautiful movie, visually, and better than most movies I've seen recently. Which, admittedly, is not a lot.

Well, I suppose I should go put on my overalls and do something productive in the yard now that the sun is out again. The bamboo has finally ceased its freakish sprouting but there are downed limbs all over the place and palm fronds which need trimming. Mr. Moon brought me home a nice, big bowl of dewberries he picked yesterday and if I was worth my salt, I'd make a few pints of preserves. This could happen.

I'll let you know.

Although why you would care is beyond me.

Love and kisses...Ms. Moon

  1. Glory! Look at that clean porch.

Our therapist tells us only one of us can be insane at a time. That's a relief! Have a Sunday dear Mary. And you don't have to do a damn thing except eat something delicious, k?

  2. I do care; and thank you for your movie review, my sister is a ginormous Bill Murray fan so I will pass this along to her. It's dreary here so the Virgo in me is envying your clean porch while she musters up the energy to even leave the couch... :)

  5. Beth Coyote- I have long realized that "only one can be insane at a time" thing. Tough rules to live by. And yet, wise. I made five tiny pints of preserves. It was fun.

Kathleen- Somedays you have the energy and some days you don't. I completely understand that. I don't think we should fight it.

Syd- I didn't realize either until Lily set me straight. So there!

Lo- Robert Duvall is a master. Bill Murray is too. I love them both.

Lynne- They are very much like blackberries only instead of having canes which grow up into bushes, they have vines which grow along the ground. They bloom and ripen before the blackberries and they are delicious.

  8. I've never heard of Get Low, but I love Sissy Spacek, so we should check it out. That casting thing is annoying -- younger women playing much older women opposite older men. Annoying for so many reasons, not least of which is the unrealistic expectation it gives women for how they should appear at the age of the character. Know what I mean?

But you're right -- at least it wasn't Anne Hathaway.

Did you know that Anne Bancroft was only a handful of years older than Dustin Hoffman when they were in The Graduate -- she supposedly a friend of his parents?

I've never heard of dewberries either. I wonder if I've eaten them just thinking they were blackberries?

  9. Elizabeth- It's worth watching in my opinion. It ain't perfect but what is?

Sweet Jo- Well, the mildew just finally went over the limit. I guess. He needs to do our kitchen and bathroom floors. Now if they only had drains in them.

Steve Reed- I most certainly do know what you mean. And yes, I had heard that about Anne Bancroft. I bet you have eaten dewberries and thought they were blackberries. Very, very smilar.

  10. Men in Hollyweird don't age, or don't think they age! Women are typically dried up at 27, dontcha know? Lol! I might see it, just to compare necks with Sissy.
