I am not getting squat done today. Everything requires but-firsts.
I was going to start cleaning but first I had to make a stew. I think I channeled a Mayan. It has venison and two kinds of squash and sweet potatoes and molasses and onions and tomatoes and celery and garlic and peppers in it. Also cinnamon. It's in the oven at 250 degrees because it was too big for the crock pot.
That took me about an hour.
Then it took an hour to clean the kitchen. Not really clean clean it. Just clean up from the stew-making.
It's taken me all day to get the laundry on the line. The diapers were dry by the time I got that last load out there.
Kathleen came by and we had a little lunch on the porch. She looks wonderful. She IS wonderful. We chatted for awhile, a typical porch visit, then she went home to lay down.
I have the windows and doors open and the day is so lovely, so perfect. Miss Bob laid me one perfect green egg.
I am going to get busy here. Now! (It is 3:30) but first, I am going to post this. I have no idea why. Because I can. Because no one really needs me today and it's such a beautiful day that I keep going outside for one reason or another and for some reason, that's more important than scrubbing toilets.
Isn't it? I think so.
All right. Seriously. Seriously going to get out the broom now.
But first I might go wander around and find some flowers to pick. Or interesting leaves.
It's that kind of day. And I am not really fighting it.
That stew looks hearty. Do you have a recipe?
ReplyDeleteSyd- Recipe? Me? Haha! Basically. Let me see how it works out and if it's really good, I'll give it to you.
ReplyDeleteMomIneedsomeofthatstewrightnow.
ReplyDeleteDTG- It's not done yet, son. Come out tonight or tomorrow night and get you some. Vergil will be here tomorrow night.
ReplyDeleteI might make biscuits.
Love...Mom(ma)
I'm there.
ReplyDeleteThat stew looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteWhen it's not raining here, we're having perfect fall days. That in and of itself is a "but first". It's the easiest thing in the world to just sit in the sun and ignore everything else.
xoxoxo
I'm pretty sure you could put together a coffee table book with your laundry hanging out in the sun. So very artful and beautiful, yet simple. I love it!
ReplyDeleteoh you guys, that little mother/son stew conversation is gonna make me cry!
ReplyDeleteI forgot to tell you how much I like the new masthead. You've never had one I didn't like...but the pictures of your home through the seasons are peaceful and happy.
ReplyDeleteThe stew looks awesome. I often put sweet potatoes in stew. Hadn't thought about the cinnamon, that sounds like an interesting complement.
We're traveling for some stories and I'm just catching moments with the PC. Have missed some of your posts--will catch up in a couple of days when we're home.
Tell your son I'd go to his pie cart any day if his recipes are as good as yours.
me too, what Jo said, so darn sweet. I loved dtgs run on word.
ReplyDeletethat stew if gorgeous. impressed.
i love your but firsts day.
it's just right.
it's okay, you need to just meander and dawdle a little. you're still getting lots done.
thinking of you.
Yes. What B said. You are getting a hunk 'o' stuff done. Sometimes we just do it in a jazz logic sort of way -- all around the melody and then back to it.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely Friday Night Date with that man 'o' yours.

That stew sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteMichelle- I agree.
ReplyDeleteRebecca- We should all hang our clothes on the line.
Jo- Me too.
Kathleen Scott- I think he'd borrow a few recipes from Mama. Have fun!
Bethany- I am happy with what I got done and not unhappy about what I did not.
Good day.
N2- Jazz logic. I love it.
Dianne- It was pretty tasty.
Beautiful stew!
ReplyDeleteMy whole life feels like a "but first" experience, but that's just how it is with young kids around! "I was planning to sweep the floor, but first I will get you your drink." And so on. No point fighting it, I search for joy in the process.
Lora- And that's why I love you so.
ReplyDeleteHow are there two different kinds of squash? I have deer steak in my fridge, but I dont know what to do with it. I kind of want to fry it. Will you help me?
ReplyDeleteOops, I mean in my freezer. From my dad's bounty :)
ReplyDeleteYum. It really does look delicious and perfect for the season. I love when you post about the food that you make.
ReplyDeleteMmmmm, looks like pumpkin squash? One of my favorites - baked is good too.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing like the smell of sheets when you bring them in from the line... it's been so long.
ReplyDeleteand N2 ~~ jazz logic. I love love that. wow.
SJ- Two types of hard squashes. An acorn and I think a "golden" acorn. Now you know what? I don't know what to do with venison steak. Ask your mama or daddy. I'd probably end up cutting it up and making vegetable soup out of it. Frying it might be good though. I'd use a lot of Worcestershire, black pepper and garlic salt on it.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth- I seem to be doing that a lot lately.
Nick- Squash are good. I like your blog! Thanks for coming to visit mine.
deb- It was a lovely night on those sheets.
Let me tell y'all, that stew was delicious. I have some in my fridge right now.
