We'll Get There

Gray and drizzly here today and I feel like perhaps I am coming down with a cold and so does Mr. Moon. This would not surprise me. We did everything but lick little Payton's face in Dothan when we were babysitting her. You just can't let rivers of snot deter you from kissing such a cute round face. Know what I mean? Seriously.

And today's the day of the party and no, I'm nowhere near ready. Yesterday I got the bathrooms done as done as they're going to get. And I've washed all the rugs and made one pie

and the best thing of all is the dogs found the dead stinky mouse in the guest room and I threw it out so that is that for the stink in there. I am so glad I was wrong and that it wasn't in the walls or under the house. Please don't judge me but there ARE critters living happily in my walls and they run and play games with nuts (I'm supposing) and I can hear their babies squeaking.
Look- I live in the country.

And I've got laundry going and Miss Maybelle just showed up in her cleaning clothes and Jessie has called and is coming out soon and Lily is going to come out at some point with Owen and Hank? Well, no doubt he's still in bed.
But they'll be out here at some point. I know they will.
Mr. Moon is off buying oysters and beer and rum and dog food. And ice. And charcoal.

The turkeys are thawing, I've made the cranberry orange relish and some cookies that look really weird but taste really good and the angel biscuit dough. That's all for tomorrow.

Oh. I have so much to do. Sheets to wash and floors to mop and candles to set out and flowers to pick and make arrangements with. Pecan pies to bake and bean salad, too. And I need to clean up the back yard where there is hopefully going to be a fire if the rain goes away.

It's okay. It'll all happen.

I was thinking yesterday that the perfect party for me would be if I got everything ready and set all the food out and then when people started coming I would put on some gorgeous silk nightgown and my diamond necklace and get in my bed and everyone could come and see me and sit on the bed and we'd chat and have rum drinks and I could hear the music but I would be in my bed and then somehow, magically, when the party was over it would all be cleaned up and I could just go to sleep.

Well, that sounds a little too much as if I were an invalid so I won't wish for that.

I wish you could all be here tonight. I do.

I'll be thinking of you, I really will. And there will be love in my heart.

  1. Funny, your description of your dream party sounded to me like something Gertrude Stein would have done...

  2. We will think of you too =)

Hope you feel better--I just got back from the doctor, and I'll be spending my holiday with strep! Lucky me! But I have my medicine, and I'll be fine. Have a good party!

  5. I don't live in the country, but I *do* live in a 120 year old house, and we have critters in our walls too. Sometimes mice, and sometimes squirrels (I think). And sometimes we put out poison bait in the closets and nooks and crannies to kill them. Mostly, I just REALLY worry about them chewing on our 120 year old electrical wires (ok, I KNOW they aren't 120 years old, but just sayin') and starting a fire.

I have never had Pecan Pie (is it Pe-cAn or Pe-cOn? We say PecOn, think maybe y'all down there say PecAn??) but I really want to make one and try it. Probably for Xmas this year.

(((HUGS))) Ms. Moon. And Happy Happy Thanksgiving wishes to you and yours :-) I love Thanksgiving. It isn't as hectic this year as it usually was, and unfortunately my sister in law has effectively shut down the tradition of us getting together at my parents' house with my brother and his family on Thanksgiving, which really REALLY pisses me off, so I don't get to see him and his girls, but we do go to W's family at noon, which I love, his uncle makes ham AND turkey (ham is my fav) and W and the kids and I will go to my mom and dad's in the evening to hang out for a bit, and I will eat SO much food, and I won't even worry about my waistline for one day.

  6. Oh, and yeah, the critters in walls/house/crawlspace. Ever had one get cooked in your dryer? That smells awesome.

  8. I'll be thinking of you and your amazing preparations for this party. I would love to see you in that nightgown in bed -- you wouldn't have to be ill; you could just be eccentric and "receive" people.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  9. I will help you clean up Mary! :) So go ahead and put on your pearls and your nightgown. I'll be on spill cleanup and plate patrol and you know the dogs will help with the floor. Hehe.

  10. I made a pie! We don't have Thanksgiving but my mother used to do a dinner when I was young.

So the pie is really just because I love pumpkin pie more than life itself and Thanksgiving is an excuse!

  11. I am all about the rum part of the plan...but I'll trade the silky nightgown for my flannel pj's.

Really, I'd prefer to skip the whole damn thing.

  15. Not like an invalid; like a queen, which you are.

  16. We too have the occasional dead mouse. I think it's just retribution from Fate who did not appreciate the laugh in her face that was the mice moving into a house with 4 cats.

I love Thanksgiving. Here is a holiday I can get behind - peace, love and sharing. Yeah, baby.

  18. OMG, is that a lemon pie??

I agree you should "receive" your guests in the comfort of your bed. especially since you're feeling under the weather and you've worked so hard preparing.

It sounds like it will be a wonderful gathering!!!

  23. I attempted to make cranberry orange relish to take to my mommas today, but I added gelatin cause it was so runny and now it's actually jello. So now we will have cranberry orange jello with our dinner. And I'm alright with that...
