Where Did Today Go?

About a week ago I had what you might call a teeny, teeny tiny breakdown. It was mostly about the priorities around here and I will absolutely not go into details but the gist of it is that my husband, after being reassured by me that no, I am not asking him to restore the house or paint it or dig a swimming pool, asked me what it is that I'd really like him to do around here and he said that he was already planning to build out the laundry room.
I told him that the laundry room is fine the way it is for now. It works. Yes, there is a card table in there but so what? However, what I really want is for him to make the old laundry room into a sort of storage/pantry place where I can keep things like the canning kettle and my canning supplies and the stock pot and things I buy in bulk. Where maybe I could even keep my vases! Some of my baking things.
Like that.
We had discussed this before and he has taken on the project with enthusiasm. We've cleared out the junk in there and he's been measuring and planning today. I took that picture of him sitting in the kitchen, drawing out his design and also doing Car Guy work, taking calls and making calls.
He's an industrious man.
I'm quite excited about the idea of being able to use the space which has been a dumping ground for all sorts of things and get a little better organized around here. While emptying the shelves in the cabinet that he's going to be taking down, I discovered several things including the fact that we never, ever for the rest of our lives need to buy a new flashlight. We must have dozens.
Also, for someone who hardly ever dusts, I certainly do seem to have a lot of furniture polish.

Anyway, that happened today and I cleaned the henhouse and I have made a cherry pie for tomorrow which is in the oven now because it took me all day for some reason. There's a custard pie in the refrigerator for tonight because I decided that if I was going to make pastry, I might as well make a lot. That pastry better be good because the proportion of it to fruit in the cherry pie is pretty unbalanced. I really did not make enough filling but oh well.

I feel quite certain that I've done other things today but I can't think of much. It's been one of those days. A good day but one which has passed so quickly that I honestly don't know what happened to it. I had all sorts of plans to start getting ready for tomorrow like picking my greens and getting the tables set up, and things tidied but I haven't done a damn thing.
But you know what? It'll all get done. Every bit of it. The weather should be perfect- a high of 73 with clear skies, and the kids will probably have a good time and the grown-ups will too. I hope. Lily's bringing the famous pineapple casserole (main ingredients: canned pineapple, butter, sugar, Ritz crackers), and there will be a ham and there will be rolls. The rest, as they say, is gravy.
Although not literally in this case. I do not make ham gravy.

And that's about all I have to say today.

Here's a picture of my finally blooming wild azalea.

Shy little fiery thing that it is. Jessie asked me yesterday if they grow okay in shade. I replied, "Obviously not that much shade."
It's always the last to bloom. I'd move it but I bought it with Kathleen and I don't want to disturb it. It's also right by the grave of Elvis, my first and best rooster. He was such a beauty. And such a sweetheart. I will let it be.

Love to all...Ms. Moon

  1. Mary I cannot tell you how much I adore my pantry. I made deviled eggs and enchiladas and have a ton of chocolate hidden in my closet for tomorrow. I love Easter the most pagan holiday there is. 🥚 🐇 💜

    1. It is a rather fun celebration, isn't it? I am looking forward to the first pantry of my life!

  2. What an amazing thing to have a spouse who knows how to build and renovate and is also willing to do so.

Do you think the furniture polish supplies are aspirational thinking?

Enjoy your day tomorrow. It sounds poifect.

    1. I love how my husband knows how to do things and can do them and, sometimes, if he is inspired- will do them! He's one in a million.
The furniture polish is absolutely aspirational thinking! Every time I buy some I completely believe I'm about to start on a major cleaning undertaking!

  3. A pantry
AND a laundry room, my gawd you are a lucky woman. some man built this house and it does not make sense at all. The kitchen, laundry "area" and no pantry what so ever, all after thoughts. postage stamp size!

    Happy springtime!

    1. Well, my laundry room is a room that was built on to connect one part of the house to another and has four doors in it, a washer, a dryer, and a card table! I like it though. It is completely workable.

  4. A pantry is an essential and worth and sort of melt down. My little house only has a tiny closet in the kitchen, but I fooled them and put in a five shelf unit in there and it is a fine pantry, and will leave with me when I go, and friends will wonder where I used to have that "dear little" pantry.

    1. That's so smart, Joanne! I'm wanting all open shelves here and I can get some of those nice baskets to put things in, hopefully in an organized manner. We shall see how it turns out.

  5. Your house appears to grow as you need it to grow. Your bathroom is giant and now you will have a large pantry and it seems like your laundry might be a good size too! Your home must be massive or seem to be massive to fit all of these things in. I am thinking one of these days you should give us a video tour of your home (and garden, and garages, etc.). I am a snoop!

    1. It is a pretty big house, especially if you count the two bedrooms upstairs but the only people who go up there are the grandchildren. Jessie and Lily used to have those rooms but of course, no longer.
I should do a video. The house sort of wanders.

  6. I am doing nothing for Easter. We saw my in laws briefly yesterday for coffee, they've been vaccinated. Today we'll take Katie out for lunch who has no idea, not does she care, that it's Easter.

I'm glad you're getting a pantry, they are handy. I have one which is full to overflowing. I try to organize it and then things fall apart.

Have a lovely day with family Mary.

I desperately wish to keep this pantry space organized. We shall see how that goes.

    1. I'll try to find my original recipe but there are some online that look about the same. It's so trashy and decadent. Although- there are no marshmallows or Cool Whip in it so it's not the worst.

  8. I also do not make ham gravy. It is entirely too salty. My industrious man and I am building a greenhouse, which is very exciting. I love projects.

    1. A greenhouse! I've often thought we should build a shade/cool house so that we could grow greens all summer.

  9. my preparations for Easter are the same as my preparations for every holiday...none. when we moved into our old house in the city there was no pantry but there was space for one around the corner behind the bathroom next to the back door and so Marc built one there. this house has a nice pantry but it's also an add on. no laundry room though, the washer and dryer are in the kitchen.

    1. My washer and dryer used to be right OFF the kitchen which is where this new pantry space will be. I'm looking forward to it so much!

  10. Happy Spring day! More storage is truly an exciting prospect. Also please take a picture of that pineapple casserole and maybe even share the recipe, if Lily allows? It sounds sinfully delish.

    1. I will gladly look for the recipe and post it. Glen's Aunt Ann passed it on to me. It's a Tennessee thing, I do believe.

  11. Your soon-to-be new laundry room sounds like it will be great. I'm sure Mr. Moon will do a wonderful job of it. My dream had always been a large old farmhouse kitchen with walk-in pantry. I never got it, but it's nice to dream isn't it!

    1. Oh, Glen will do a great job! He doesn't do anything half-assed. He is genetically incapable.
I've always dreamed of a pantry too, and now I seem to be about to get one!

  12. Well, if your azalea is blooming at all, I guess it must be at least somewhat happy! Exciting to have a new pantry/storage area in the offing, and I know Mr Moon is probably excited to have another project to work on. As you said -- industrious!

I hope your Easter is going well. I'm sure it is.

    1. Yep. The azalea isn't dead which is a sort of success, I guess.
I don't know how much Glen is excited about this project. He has a list as long as he is that he really WANTS to get to. This is sort of a speed bump but he knows it'll make me so happy.

  13. Storage is the most beautiful thing, except for my dishwasher. I have maximized every square inch of storage and now unfortunately I have to RECYCLE stuff I don't use/need etc. it does feel good when I see and have more counter space, however fleeting. I love you and your whole family. XXXX

    1. Isn't it nice to clear off counter space? And why is it so damn hard? I mostly use everything I have on my counters frequently so it's not just a waste of space to have them there.
I love you and your beautiful family too!

  14. We’re in a 600 ft. house. We have a usable basement, no garage. The whole basement, what there is of it, is a dumping ground. About once a year i get a wild hair and clean and rearrange and kill nasties. I do wish we had more room but then we’d probably have more stuff. I think we’re about all stuffed up! Your man will do an awesome job of making you more room, no doubt about it!
Enjoy that beautiful family of yours! Dessert sounds heavenly! We’re having fruit crisp after having homemade pizza.

    1. Of course if your house was bigger you'd have more stuff- it's like my purse theory- the bigger the purse you have, the more stuff you'll find yourself carrying around. And honestly? Most of it is unnecessary to say the least.
Pizza and fruit crisp sound delicious.
