The Appliance of Family Museum And Art Gallery

Turns out the new refrigerator won't be here until tomorrow which is a very good thing. Owen won't be here tomorrow and I'll be able to concentrate on the task.
Plus, Lis is here and I need her help. See all that stuff on my refrigerator? What do I do with it all? The refrigerator has become more of a museum, a time capsule, an archaeological site for the history of our family than it should be. And Lis's refrigerator is a stunning example of less-is-more and of restraint and good taste. I am hoping that she can guide me in her sweet way to a more tasteful kitchen appliance of my own.
That she will take me by the hand and help me to toss what I should toss, put away what I should put away and keep what I should keep.
This is my hope.

And all of this is making me remember the time I moved from one house to another and lost two hits of acid somehow in the move. I always wonder what happened to that acid. At least I won't have that worry this time. As far as I know there is no LSD in my freezer. Some fish that I'm not sure which century it was caught in. Some veggie burgers which have more freezer-burn content than soy content. I might throw those things away.
On purpose.

I need to be ruthless, inside and out, when the new refrigerator comes.
Lis will help me. I know she will.
Also? She brought rum. That won't hurt either.

Wish me luck.

  2. I saved all my old refrigerator door coverings in a big envelope. They chronicle a certain phase in my life.
I'm glad I didn't throw them away. I'm sure the rum will make it all clear...

  3. Around here we have the AmerenUE, refrigerator clean out program. It seems almost every year, without fail, the power goes out for anywhere from 3 to 7 days. 99% of everything in the refrigerator and freezer gets thrown away.

Now, what's ON the refrigerator is another thing. And our refrigerator barely has any bare spots left. But I take pride in our little creation. I love it like that

  4. Like yours, my refrigerator is also a bulletin board/storage shelf. Notices, pictures, souvenirs go on its front; art offerings and more pictures on its side and trays, baskets and egg cartons waiting to be recycled on the top. Each time I open the refrigerator door I get a sweet reminder of family.

So glad you are getting a new refrigerator so that your greens won't freeze. Celebrate with pina colada's!

  6. Nothing a few good hefty trash bags can't help you with. You will be better off, I promise.

  7. I *love* interesting refrigerators. I really enjoy looking at people's pictures, invitations, lists, clippings, and all the other things we tend to tack up. A clear, simple fridge is nice too though. I am all for simplifying and decluttering.

  8. We de-cluttered the fridge last fall but I notice now that things are coming back. I just have to accept the fact that my house is "lived-in" and will never look like a magazine.

  12. Good luck. My fridge is even more covered with stuff (including the post card you sent me with the scarf) than yours.

I think I'm headed out for an alcoholic lunch.

    Love,

  13. A busy fridge is a sign of a full life.

Losing LSD is a sign of too much LSD.

  15. I laughed about the lost LSD. Wow--hope that it didn't wind up in some old sugar cubes or something. Never did that stuff. I'm glad too.
