Tiny Morning Question

And why, oh why, is bed the most comfortable place in the world right as you have to leave it? Why are the sheets so soft on the skin, the blankets' weight so perfect, the memory of the dream so enticing that the thought of falling back into it so incredibly hard to resist? Why has the dog finally found the perfect place to snuggle against you, his warmth, your warmth so very, very perfect together?

I do not know.

But it is.

  1. we swing back and forth between life and dreams much like a pendulum, and there always comes that point of still tension; the moment we awake is also the moment we are closest to all for which our hearts yearn.

  2. It's a new form of torture being covertly perfected by the CIA. You are an unwitting subject of this experiment.

    Have a nice day.

  3. Adrienne- Perfectly, beautifully true.

Ms. Fleur- And now I know!

  4. Ahhh, bed porn. I know it well.

When I was in school, the only way I could make myself get up in the morning was by promising myself I could get back in when I got home. And then i'd spend the day imagining my duvet round me, my head in my pillow, so real I could actually feel it.

There was an ad some years ago, with people cycling/bussing to work in their duvets. It made so much sense.

  5. Yes, I agree. I felt that way this very morning, so I was running late for work.

    Go figure.

  7. It is such a tension - I love getting up early and how productive I am then, but especially when it is 45 degrees in my house - getting out of my cozy bed is soooo hard! So today I climbed right back in with a cup of coffee and got to work studying while still in bed. Today's compromise.

    Great pic!

  9. I had the worst time waking up this morning. First I retrieved Elijah from his crib at 7a.m. Then I thought that I just might catch a couple more minutes if he watched cartoons in my bed.

Of course not. He was bouncing on my head and neck region within mere seconds of me lying back down.

  10. ah, so true. Your bed looks so cozy. I had a hell of a time getting myself out of bed for work this morning. Not even the promise of a new coffee flavor helped.
Gosh I could never have my bed under the window, cold drafts! Shows you live in Florida.

    Adrienne is a poet!

Jo: I love the way you wrote about promising yourself you could get back in and then dreaming of your blankets all day, that's ME!

  11. That was exactly how I felt this morning whenn I lumbered out of bed. EXACTLY.

  12. Jo- How many times have I promised myself a nap as I struggled out of bed? I can't count that high. Maybe those snuggies are a way to stay in bed while doing other things. Like watching TV. I don't know.

Ms. Bastard- Oh honey. Bless your heart.

Danielle- Well, sleep is my very favorite activity and I am not kidding.

Nola- Sounds like a great compromise to me. I have my sheets in the washer to avoid getting back in bed. This works for me.

Tanya- I guess we all have these same feelings, right?

Erin- I remember those days. This is why I am still catching up on my sleep even though my "baby" is twenty years old.

Bethany- NO. I HAVE to sleep under the window. Hot flashes. Do you have any idea of the sheer unadulterated pleasure it is to grab a freezing pillow off the stack under the window and hold it to my body when I am having a hot flash? NO YOU DO NOT! But you will someday. Poor Mr. Moon has to sleep with a hat on. That window stays open 365 nights a year, no matter how cold it is.

Kori- Glad I could put it into words for you.

  13. Ms. Moon: I have a wonderful thick comforter that blocks out the world. I'm not sure I could leave it but for the husband and teenager who are up and about so early I don't have a choice. They are the fail-safe alarm clock.

  14. Round these parts you can't have the bed under the window in case of earthquakes, but I like the look of it.

My bed makes me feel like I'm being held by my mama... and I mean that in a good way.

  15. I ask myself that question every morning. And then I remember two little mouths that need to be fed, so I get out of bed and will its seductive comfort away.

  16. Every weekend when I can finally loll in bed with my love this happens. It is all so perfect...how can the bed feel so wonderfully cozy? The sheets twining around us warm from spooning...heaven on earth the bed....

  17. I just hate it. I do not sleep well at night, but around 4-5am is when my body/mind finally come to an agreement that sleep is required...and then the alarm goes off at 6. Or Mr. Farty yells from his room across the hall: 'MOM! Get the KITTY!' This is why I often resemble the walking dead.

  18. I never, ever want to go to bed at night. I stay up way too late. Then in the morning, I do not want to leave. I want to stay in bed as long as possible. I don't understand this about myself. But I remember I was the same way about baths when I was a kid. Didn't want to get it, and then didn't want to get out.

  19. It's especially hard when the weather outside is somewhere near 10F and the kids are dancing around your bed with the energy you want but don't have.

  20. When I was young and single and childless I would spend all day saturday and all day sunday in bed reading steven king and drinking coffee. I'd have eggs benedict delivered for breakfast and tofu with spicy black bean sauce delivered for dinner.

    Heavenly

  21. I love that you've already gotten over twenty comments, even when you've posted a photo of your comfy bed with a question.

We sure do love you, Ms. Moon!

  22. Glimmer- You would get up. I do and mostly I don't have kids or husband to force me out of bed. And I have a comforter like that too. I call it my duck.

Stephanie- Well, I worry when we have high winds. There's a cherry laurel which doesn't look too healthy right outside my window. But at least we don't have to worry about earthquakes.

    Angie- Ah. I remember.

Ellen- Mr. Moon is not a loller. He goes from sound asleep to UP in one second. Thankfully, my little Yorkie is better at hanging in bed with me.

    Rachel- That SUCKS!

Lora- Oh. I DO want to go to bed at night. Sometimes I have to force myself to stay up longer. That's how much I love to sleep.

Rebecca- The little monsters! Dancing monsters who wake their mama! Thank God they're so cute, right?

Michelle- YOU DID NOT! That is so freaking awesome I can't even begin to tell you.
    Sigh....

Elizabeth- I am wondering about that myself. I think this is something we can all agree on- we do not want to get out of bed in the morning.

  23. Aahh, Bed! My compromise is to get up and turn on the heater, then get back in bed with a cup of tea and write my morning pages there. When I am done with those it is time to get up. Definitely one of the luxuries of having grown children and being on sabbatical. x0 N2

  24. It was hard, this morning. Oh, so hard.

  25. Agreed! However there is no better feeling than waking in the middle of the night to those same soft blankets, enticing dreams and a warm cozy partner beside you just to discover that you still have several more hours of sweet slumber ahead of you. It's one of my favorite little pleasures!

  26. I enjoy sleep so much more when I have to get up early in the morning. And, the best part of it, I always find myself in the middle of a dream. It makes me want to stay for more, but it's also better than not remembering them at all. So even though I complain about getting up at ungodly hours (which was 5:45am today so I could go to the gym before class) it makes me so much more appreciative of that little heaven I have in my room.

Hey ma, do you remember when you used to read me stories in your bed when I was little and I'd pretend to fall asleep? I was always hoping you'd let me stay there, because it was truly the best place in the world. I guess I wasn't very good at pretending to be asleep, though.

    ReplyDelete
  27. N2- I'm afraid I would just fall back asleep but it makes me happy to think of you scribbling away in your cozy bed.

    Nancy C- You too?

PalagiGirl- Stop it! Just silly words.

HoneyLuna- Yes. I remember that. I think you did it last week. Haha! You would if I read to you in bed. We should take a nap together sometime, sweet girl. I'm proud of you for getting up early and going to the gym. What fortitude!

  29. For me it's always the call of the bed in the evening - there's nothing better than getting in there early with a good book. I do this even before it's dark. This also helps with the mornings - after I've been in bed so long it's almost (almost!) nice to get out of the thing. So I tell myself. But frankly, my bed is probably one of the best places in the world...for myself...and one other particular person. Grin.

  30. It is!!!

I hadn't slept all night, but then all of a sudden after the alarm went off, I could doze so nicely. So bad.
