A Good One For Sure

Today was Lily and my day to have an outing together. It's Jason's birthday and the children were with him so we had a rare chance to go do something fun together and we did. We drove to Monticello and stopped by the library to see Terez because we haven't seen him in a very long time. It was so good to see him and get some Terez hugs. Everyone loves Terez. Remember how Lily and Jessie and I used to take all the littles to the Toddler Time at the library there? It was always so much fun.
We let him get back to his job and went directly to the Mexican restaurant where we feasted our eyes and our bellies. They look to be doing a booming lunch business. I am still amazed at how much heart, soul, energy, time, art, and money they have put into this new venture.

Every booth back is decorated in different pictures. Just amazing.

After lunch we went to Wag The Dog, the thrift store whose proceeds go to the local humane society, and we both got treasures. Lily got some craft things and I got a glass loaf pan/casserole dish because I need smaller baking dishes for Mr. Moon's and my meals. I also got a half dozen nice small white cotton napkins and I also got these:

They were printed in 1956, copyright date of 1949 and in extremely good condition. I do not think they were ever read. I dithered about buying them, knowing that kids just don't read the way they used to, but lusting after them anyway. Then I looked them up online and saw that some sets with the same printing and copyright dates were selling for $150 or more. There was no price on the set but all hardbacks at Wag are $1.50 so I figured- fifteen bucks, what the hell? I did tell Lily I know that after I die she and her siblings are going to have to deal with them along with all the other crap in this house and she reassured me that it was all right. They would manage.
And when I went to check out, the lady said, "Hmmmm...Ten dollars for the set?"
"That sounds good," I said.
I swear to you- I would pay children to let me read those books out loud to them.

We went to a few more stores, two or three of which I've never set foot in but which are actually quite lovely. Monticello is coming up in the world. We also went to our favorite antique store where I saw a guy I've known since he was a kid. He was in a few plays at the Opera House with me back in those days. I've always had a special affection for him and I gave him a big hug. I also told him that I'd unfollowed him on Facebook. Which I did.
"Was I saying mean shit?" he asked.
"Yes," I said.
A while back he started posting extremely right-winged stuff and at first I thought he was being heavily ironic but after awhile, I decided he wasn't. And then I decided that whether he was or wasn't, the posts were disturbing me and so I unfollowed him. So I told him that in front of god and everyone including, it turned out, his mother who unbeknownst to me is one of the owners of the shop.
Hoo-boy.
I am not sure why I felt the need to be so honest with him but I did and I don't think he was upset and neither was I.
I don't know how his mother felt.
Anyway, we ended with another heartfelt hug and my affection for him remains.
It was a good day for hugs.

After Lily and I had been to all of the stores we wanted to go into, we had to head south of town to go to a hardware store to pick up some screws and bits for Mr. Moon who is still working on the deck.
That, too, was a trip. When we walked into the store, we saw a cat, snoozing on a pallet of bottled water and when you walk into a store and the first thing you see is a sleeping cat, you know you're in a good place.

And it was.
Before it was all over, the guy who appeared to be the boss had been on the phone with Mr. Moon to make sure I was buying the correct screws (I wasn't) and it was just an all-around pleasant experience.

If Monticello had a Publix, I'd never bother going to Tallahassee except to see my kids. Well, and you know- go to Costco.

So that was my day and no, the kitchen floor is still not mopped and it's still hotter than the devil's balls. I picked beans and a few other things this morning before Lily and I went off on our adventure.

It's been a very, very fine day all the way around.
Tomorrow. Tomorrow I'll mop that floor. And weed the garden and take a walk and sweep rooms and do laundry and, and, and....

Maybe.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Great day! You can be sure that if and when you get to that floor it will still be there, no worries.

    1. So will all the dirt! It's going to be a twice-mopping situation.

  2. That's so nice that you and Lily got to spend time together, without kids. I'm sure you both enjoyed it. I was at Goodwill last summer and came across some old canning jars with the glass top, hard to find. The guy wasn't sure what they should be priced at because there were only ten, instead of the dozen. I got them for a buck a piece. Very nice.

That's nice that you and that guy could agree to disagree and still be nice to each other. And the cat, I love places that have animals that spend a lot of time there, or live there.

Don't worry about the floor, it'll still be there when you have time or feel like it.

    1. It was such a rare treat to do something with Lily when it was just us.
Those old glass-topped canning jars are pretty rare. Good find!
I really have no idea how my friend thinks but whatever- I still like him. And yes, shops with cats are the best shops.
I just mopped. So. Done. For this second.

    2. Mr. Terez! When he and Lily stand together, they look like normal sized people but he's 6'5" and she's 6'.
You are so right about the floors. But no one is going to eat off them so who cares?
Yeah. It's that hot here, too, I think. It's brutal.
I don't know if the kids will be interested in listening to any stories from those books or not. But if they are, I am available!

    1. Lily is so pretty. We were walking across the street an a lady popped out of a cafe and asked if she was the hair stylist! I loved that.
You're right about the books' price. It sort of literally was a steal.

  5. I read the spines of all those books. Wonderful. I think you'll be reading them aloud, for a long time. They're collections of stories.

  8. Just to get an accurate sense of how hot it was, I decided to Google "How hot are the devil's balls?" and it turns out I asked the same question in "Bless Our Hearts" back in July 2020! I am still none the wiser.

    1. At the moment that would be defined as approximately 99 degrees F.

  9. I'm glad you saw Terez and yes, I do remember tales of toddler story time. We used to have a similar set of Junior Classics in our house when I was growing up. They were my mother's when she was little. I think my brother might have them now. (I hope so, if they're worth that much!) That cat looks healthy and happy.

    1. Oh, and I think it's great that you were honest with your erstwhile Facebook friend. People should know that the political stuff they post affects others and has consequences. That's true no matter the perspective. I've lost a few blog readers over political things I've posted.

    2. I bet you actually read those books. Or at least some of them. I would have thought I'd died and gone to heaven if they'd been in our house. Probably why I bought them.
I am glad you said what you did about me being honest with my friend. That makes me feel like it was okay to speak out.

  12. Is there anything better than wandering with a daughter? Everything feels right with the world, and you run into such treasures as that set of books you bought, and I'm so glad you didn't leave those behind. And that Mexican restaurant, what a feast for the eyes!

    1. I'm glad I bought them too. If I hadn't, I'm sure I would have had to make another trip to go get them.
And yes- being with a daughter is something so very, very special. We have such a history and know each other so well. And that shared sense of humor is the best!
And we both love Mexican food.

  13. Oh, Mary, those books are divine! I'd like to come over and we could read them aloud to each other.

  14. All that stuff at the end is all a bug maybe around here. Every time I unroll my yoga mat and see all the dust and fuzz under my bed I think I should vacuum and I never do. Sounds like a good day with Lily.

At my 20th high school reunion (the only one I have been to) I saw a woman who bullied me my entire 9th grade year (last of of junior high back then) and I was surprised to see her because I thought she had gone to the rival high school and I remember it with such a relief that she would be going there and not where I went. Anyway, for whatever reason I walked up to her and said Diane Reed, you made my life miserable in 9th grade. She looked a little startled (I don't think she remembered me or even knew who I was even though we were all wearing name tags). She said, I'm sorry, and I turned around and walked off. So I get the impulse to confront someone who upset us.
