No, I Did Not Get The Kitchen Floor Mopped

I took a walk this morning and actually got out an hour earlier than I usually do which did not help at all. It is seriously hot. It is getting to the brutal stage. It feels like an oven when you walk outside, especially if you're surrounded by asphalt, which thank god we're not, but it sure does make going to town even less an attractive prospect than ever. My weather widget says it's 96 in Lloyd right now with a "feels like" temperature of 109 due to the humidity.
Hellfire, Martha.

So after my walk I decided that today would be the day for me to drive down to the Wacissa. Mr. Moon was in town because he'd gone to the gym and then to Lowe's and I told him I'd wait for him to get home so that he could go with me. He said, "Sweet."
And just like that we were reminded that yes, we are sort of retired although we both seem to work as much as we ever did, and we can take off any time we want to which is indeed very sweet.

There weren't many people there when we got there and we didn't wait a minute until we dove in. I know I overuse the word "heaven" but how else to describe how it feels to immerse one's body that has been overheated to the core of it in such cold water?
Glory? Ecstasy? Oh-Jesus-Thank-You-God?
Yeah. All of that.
And then we sat in our chairs in the shade and both went in to trance states, just watching the water, the people, the sky. You know how much I love to people watch at the river. Tattoos and families of all colors and ages and babies and today there were some little guys fishing in kid-kayaks and one of them, who appeared to be about seven years old at the most, was one of the most serious and focused fisherperson I've ever seen. Mr. Moon was quite impressed too. We watched him catch a few little bream and were happy for him. He was way cool about it.

****************

Okay. Holy shit. When I sat down to write this the sky was blue and the air was still and all of a sudden, a wind has kicked up and is twisting the trees into a frenzy and I can hear small branches cracking. Will it bring us some rain? I just checked my weather widget again and it's now saying we are in a severe thunderstorm warning and to shelter in place.
Huh.
Sounds like summer in North Florida to me. And now it sounds like summer in North Florida to me as the the thunder is beginning to rumble.
Oh, how I love it! I bet the temperature has already dropped five degrees.

****************

Mr. Moon and I dunked ourselves in the water at least four or five times in between chair-trances and people watching. More and more people began to show up and so around three o'clock we left. There had been a bit of excitement when I suppose a gator was sighted off the dock as everyone clustered there to watch it. I was too tranced-out to get my ass up and go look. I've seen gators before and this must have been a small one because no one was screaming. Last time Lily and I were there with the kids, there'd been a snake in the grass that caused a bit of a stir but it was just a corn snake and it was left to go its way.

I am making a summer facsimile of Thanksgiving dinner tonight. I'm going to roast a turkey breast and make a green bean casserole with our own beans, of course, and an eggplant dish that tastes very like stuffing. Or at least my stuffing. Pepperidge Farm bread crumbs are involved in both. Please don't judge me. I love the stuff.

******************

Well, here comes the rain. It smells so damn good. The trees are still dancing, the little birds are twittering like crazy, and the frogs are jumping in on the chorus as the thunder cracks the percussion track.

It's been a very, very good day and I need to remember that in all reality, Mr. Moon and I can take days like this whenever we want. And in fact, we should take far more than we do.

Okay. Lightening getting fierce. Rain absolutely pouring down. It's a freaking deluge! It's great!

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Such a happy post, all about enjoying the water wherever it is! And yes, you can give yourselves days off if you like. So do.

  2. Yes, when we are dying I am sure we are not going regret NOT hanging more laundry and mopping more floors, especially after our families have grown - doing their own laundry. My life now is one long day off!

    1. Since I was always mostly a "housewife" my job hasn't changed much although I don't have children about most of the time so it is easier in that way for sure. Also- I can make my own schedule.

  3. The water at Wacissa looks lovely - what a great place to spend part of the day. It was cooler here, but with a very stiff breeze blowing in over the sea, whipping up the waves. It was so bad that we cancelled our trip to run errands and go shopping - it is no fun to ride in a boat for 40 minutes (80 min for there and back) that is going "whomp, whomp, whomp" over the waves with vertebra-crushing intensity. Glad you got your cooling rain.

    1. Oh, I KNOW those "whomp-whomps"! If one can avoid them, one should. I was so glad we got that rain.

  5. floors be damned. Dips in the Wacissa with Mr Moon are heavenly and well earned! You go! and I envy your rain......though not the heat and humidity. We are at 90 today (coastal Calif. REALLY?) but we don't have the humidity, thank goodness, Your dinner sounds lovely also,,,,,but oven on in that heat? or air fryer (hopefully). I would love the pitter patter of rain drops about now........which I hope are gracing you as I type this

    1. I did use the oven and felt guilty for it but everything need to be in the oven at the same time so there just wasn't room in my Easy Bake. The rain did last for awhile. It was glorious.

  6. We've had lots of rain, too. Trees ripped out overnight and thousands and thousands without power. Next, the heat sets in.

    1. We did not lose power for which I was grateful. We do have the generator but I think we're missing a part that's been ordered but has not yet arrived.
Sounds like you had a terrible storm!

  7. Hot here in Georgia too. Minus the swimming hole and cooling rain.

  8. Bless you for having a great day. And a great rain. I'm jealous.

  9. A storm! An honest-to-goodness thunder and lightning rainstorm! I love those. I don't like the damage they can cause to homes though. And as much as I like rivers, gators and snakes would have me packing up and going home.

    1. Yes indeed! It was a true storm! We had some branches down but nothing too horrible.
I know that many people do not want to share their space with reptiles of the snake and/or alligator variety but it's just the way it is here.

  10. I love summer storms too, although I do remember my ex standing under our balcony, beer in hand, watching one and saying exactly that. Then, a massive thunderbolt struck a few feet away from him. I swear the jump he did would have gotten him in the US Olympic team, it was so funny!

  11. Glad you had a day to relax as you and Mr. Moon have been so very busy. I am not a fan of the heat and right now it is very hot here. I don't have to tell you to stay cool because you ARE so cool already! Stay happy and safe, tho!

  12. 'It is getting to the brutal stage.' Love that line - perfect.
And later your post reminded me of..
    Summertime
    And the livin' is easy
    Fish are jumpin'
    And the cotton is high....

  13. We have the heat and humidity but no cooling river or rain. And yeah, I'm as busy as I ever was before we retired. I don't understand how people retire and are bored with nothing to do and then they become frail and die.

I stopped eating turkey after those long long afib episodes last year as a friend of mine says turkey is a trigger for hers, some chemical in the meat, and for the last six months or so mine has been very quiet. They say correlation isn't causation but I don't think I'll start eating turkey again.

    1. Huh. I've never heard that connection between turkey and A-fib but I guess it sure could be.
I wish with all my heart that you'd get some rain.

  14. It’s sticky and steamy enough to take your breath away. Just walking from the car to the store makes me a sweaty mess. I’m in awe that you managed a “real” walk, wish we had something other than lukewarm water to jump into here. I retired a couple of years ago and I swear I don’t know where the time goes, I’m with Ellen, don’t understand how anyone could be bored.

    1. I think that some people absolutely need to have some sort of real structure to their days. I do, in that my own created structure is important to me but I am never bored.
Walking from the car to the store is pretty horrible these days. I agree.

    1. It's really pretty ridiculous for me to get out there in this heat. I'm certainly not taking long walks. Just the shorter ones. And that is all I can handle.

  18. A wonderful report in every regard! From your description, I can just imagine the feel of being immersed in the cold sweet Wicassa, and the blissed out state it brought to you both. Such a romantic day.
