Some Day

If you go HERE, you can read about the day, five years ago, that this magnificent Woman Baby, Magnolia June Hartmann, was delivered in her mama and daddy's bed by a sweet, strong woman named Tanashia (I spelled her name wrong in the original post) was born. It was a short labor, a fast and strong labor, and she looked like this when she was in her mother's arms.

This morning, she looked like the Queen of Birthday Breakfast as you can see above. She had spent the night at Jason's house and told her mother to relay to her father that for her breakfast she wanted bacon, square hash browns, chocolate milk and a cupcake.
And so it was. And so she had.
I think she was happy.
Just like the night she was born, it is raining here in Lloyd tonight, chilly and calm, and I am thinking of how incredibly sweet her birth was, how strong and loving and happy her parents were, how delighted Owen and Gibson were to meet their baby sister. Their Maganolia, as Gibson called her. She is five now, sassy as her mama ever was, smart as anyone could be, funny and gorgeous and her very own person, quite sure of her place in the world.
We are so lucky to have that Princess Woman Baby.
Tanashia also delivered Levon and has become a real, true registered nurse midwife with her own practice and I know that her calm and experienced and talented, trained presence is a blessing to all of the women and babies she helps.

It's been a day. Mr. Moon and I got up early for us (these days) and went to Monticello where we stayed outside of the health department until 9:00 a.m. which is when our appointment was and then we went up to the door where an EMT met us and gave us some information on the vaccine we were about to receive. Inside our temperatures were taken, we were given our paperwork, we went down the hallways to rooms where nurses gave us our shots and an appointment card for the second vaccine which we'll get in three weeks.
Everyone was so nice, so professional. When I was waiting for my husband to meet me in the waiting area (which was empty), the first lady who took our temperatures came over to me and said, "No offense, but why do the short women get all the tall men?" I laughed and she added, "I have to wear flats!" She didn't look THAT tall to me, really, but like I told her, I do have two daughters who are almost six feet tall. Just then Mr. Moon came out and as we walked out, I said over my shoulder, "He has to be that big for his heart to fit in."
All the ladies swooned a little.
But it's true. We had to wait in our car for fifteen minutes before we could leave to make sure that we didn't have some catastrophic anaphylactic reaction and then we drove home feeling like we were part of something rather huge.

Jessie and the boys came out for a little while and there was Lego building and a little Shaun the Sheep watching and I got out the leftovers and we had leftover buffet which was delicious. There was shrimp salad and pizza and burritos and I was so happy to get the refrigerator cleared out a little. Before they left I read two books to the boys and after they left I took a little nap which is quite unusual for me these days so I may be having a small reaction. My arm is sore but it was sore after the flu shot too. No big deal.
Mr. Moon feels mainly relief in getting the shot while I still feel as if it would have been better going to May who works with the public every day or Lily who still works some shifts at Publix but I live in Jefferson County and they live in Leon County and it's not like I can give mine away.
I think the children are far more relieved that we're getting it than I am. I just feel like our risk is low because we don't have to go out into the public very much and can be relatively safe when we do.
But it did feel like a pretty big deal to get that shot and I am grateful.

May and I were just texting a few minutes ago and I told her that I wish she didn't have to get up so early on some days to go in to a place where she works so very, very hard and is around so many people all day. I told her that I wished I could have given her my vaccine. And this is what she texted back.

"This morning, after I was at work for a little while, I went out back to take out some boxes and there was the most glorious sunrise. So I went back inside and told Billy and Greg (our meat manager, lovely man) about it, and we all went outside and looked at it for a few minutes. Under this gorgeous sunrise, there was a homeless person sleeping in the Little Caesar's parking lot, and above it was the crescent moon. We were together but apart, all wearing our masks, and stood witness.  That's how I am."

And if you wonder why I always say that May is the best writer in the family- there you have it. I asked her if I could post that on my blog and she said yes.

I don't think I need to say another thing except Happy Birthday, our beautiful Magnolia and congratulations to Joe Biden who will soon be our next president, signed, sealed, and delivered by the lawmakers who came back to that chamber where just hours before bedlam had ensued and did what they were elected to do by order of the Constitution of the United States.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Happy Birthday to Magnolia June! I cannot even process that it's been FIVE YEARS since I read about her birth here. Unreal.

I'm so glad you've gotten half of your vaccine! That's wonderful! I truly can't wait until we can all get it. I so badly want life to go back to normal.

May really is a beautiful writer. Just like her mother.

  3. How lucky you and Glen are to have had your vaccines so soon. Think I will have to wait till March to get mine. Shirley had her first shot yesterday because the health centre phoned her at 6pm saying they had a few spare shots left and she is someone who is putting the vaccine into people's arms!

    1. I know- it's not fair at all that Glen and I are getting ours so early but this is how it's set up in my little rural county. Well, we're not little when it comes to area but certain as pertains to population. I'm glad that Shirley is getting hers.

  4. Happy birthday to little Maggie. She looks pretty happy with blue frosting all over her face. I must admit to being a little jealous. Next week I start back teaching in person and I am 74. Probably should have quit but until last year I loved it too much to give it up. In my state they are still only giving it to the first responders and nursing homes. In the next phase they will incorporate people 75 and over so I still don't make the cut until the third phase. There is no indication when they will start the second phase let alone the third so I guess I will continue to be unprotected for some time.

    1. Don't we all want bacon, square hash browns, cupcakes and chocolate milk in bed on our birthdays? It's so funny. I'm not sure that I even knew the concept of breakfast in bed at the age of five.
It's really weird how each state is handling the vaccines. I would definitely think that a 74-year old teacher would be high on the list. I'm so sorry.

    1. Could that joyous day really have been five years ago? So hard to believe.
I got the Moderna vaccine. Doesn't that sound like a woman's hygiene product? Ha!
      Yes. Please stay safe, Susan.

  10. Happy birthday Magnolia! She is so beautiful! I am certain that grandchildren grow twice as fast as our children grew.

Congratulations on you two getting the vaccine! I am so happy for you. I was actually able to get our names on a list with the Health Dept. today. It could still be months before we get the vaccine but at least it's a start.

    1. That line of yours about grandchildren growing twice as fast as our own children did rings so true in my soul.
I hope your health department speeds through the list to your name. Until then- be safe.

My county benefits from a low population which is good in some regards.

  13. Happy birthday to Magnolia! I love May's story of the sunrise. I think it's so important to find joy in the little things, since the big things are so stressful.

It's great that you got your vaccine! Dave's parents haven't done a thing about getting theirs in Manatee County. We're supposed to be notified by the NHS here in Britain when ours is available, but I don't think it will be for a long while yet.

      It slayed me.
I hope the NHS gets your vaccines to you soon, Steve. Hell, I hope the whole world can get vaccinated soon.

  14. I am so anxious for my mom to get her vaccine. She is in Daytona, so Volusia county. And that is a clusterfuck. They aren't doing appointments so it is a free for all. On Monday they had 1000 doses that went to the first 1000 to show up. Clusterfuck. Needless to say my mom was not one that got the golden ticket

  16. Happy Birthday, Magnolia!
Glad you have gotten your first shot. You still must be careful but you are on your way.
That is how I feel about our country right now - we must be very careful but Biden/Harris are on their way and things will be better.

  18. Happy birthday to Magnolia June. And what a wonderful newborn picture. Nursing as if she'd been doing it for years.
I'm glad you got the vaccine. I'm registered on our state registry, but it's unlikely to be earlier than March at best. We're still giving vaccine to health workers, police and firefighters. It's a slow process.meanwhile, we're being careful.
