And Then There Was Squash

Another day, another walk, another line of clothes, another floor-sweeping, another nap, another article in the New Yorker. At this rate I'll catch up on all of them by the time I'm dead.
The article I read today was about Dr. Fauci and I'm glad I read it. I had heard some of what had gone on in his career when he was head of AIDS research but I didn't know that he had actually listened to the demands of AIDS activists about changing the drug-testing protocols when so many people were dying and suffering. It seems to me that not only is he obviously gifted at research and medicine, he is also a compassionate and empathetic human being who is able to learn from those around him, to have an open mind, to stay removed from the politics of a situation when that is what's called for. And that he's not afraid to speak truth to power.
Which he obviously has to do these days.

A friend of mine posted on Facebook that he took his dog to a beach near his condo in Panama City (Florida) and there were so many people there not wearing masks, toting beach gear, cramming up together that he got back in his car and drove off. He saw cars from all over, many of them not from Florida.
My god but people are stupid. The paper posted pictures from Tallahassee of places opening up again, couples sitting at tables with no masks (because you can eat when you're wearing a mask!) with servers standing right there beside them, taking orders. Florida is as ridiculous as the press makes us out to be and that's all there is to it.
I guess we'll be a big old experiment to see what happens when you go back into the burning building because there's enough fire trucks to keep the flames under control.
Is it really that important to go to a favorite restaurant or to buy a new dress? Oh! Don't worry! After someone tries on a garment they steam it before putting it back out on the rack!
Well.

So we picked our first squash today. Those things can almost double in size overnight. I swear. Here's two that we picked.

I'm going to make a small squash casserole tonight along with some sweet potatoes and pork chops, some collards and kale from the garden. Mr. Moon has been working so hard and we are going to enjoy the results of his labors so much.

In some sort of miracle it's supposed to get cool again this week. I can't remember ever having weather this mild in May. I know it won't last but while it does, I am going to revel in it. This morning's walk was hard, the day already hot and humid by the time I got out there but nothing like it's going to be by the end of the month, I'm sure.

That's about all I have to say this evening. I've been a little low today but I plan on picking myself up by my big girl panties and moving on beyond that tomorrow. Not sure how but dadgummit! It must be done! There is no excuse for me to wallow in misery when I am surrounded by such beauty, such bounty, such love.
That's what I'm telling myself tonight.
And I am going to try.

Let's all remember that this virus is no joke, that no matter what presidents and governors may say, the danger is far from over. And that's not the paranoid ranting of a libtard, either. It's the damn scientific truth. When your state won't even release the true numbers of infections or death but says it's safe to go out you have to suspect that perhaps it really isn't.

Love you lots...Ms. Moon

  1. I have been in a similar state of mind today and gave myself a pep talk while dog walking with my son in law. Most(99 percent) of my neighbors have been good about wearing masks. We are in a large city with congested housing and there are still many cases of the virus. We have 3 family members ill,all of whom work in Healthcare and believe me,it brings it into focus. All the best to you in Florida. I don't understand the thinking in the state!

    1. I am so sorry to hear about the people in your family who are ill. Are they okay?
Yeah. Until people actually KNOW someone who gets sick, they can easily ignore the whole thing if they want to.
      Florida is just...well. You know.

  2. I've been trying hard to pick myself up out of my low mood today. Your dinner sounds DELICIOUS! We're getting ready to light the grill. Our dinner will be grilled chicken marinated in lemon juice, garlic, and herbs, as well as grilled sweet corn, and a mix of fancy kinds of rice ("long grain, wild, brown, and red"). I'll also be slicing some fresh tomatoes and cucumbers I bought from the farm stand to go along with it. I wish I had some squash. My favorite way to eat it is to slice it, batter it, and fry it up crunchy-golden. But squash casserole is pretty good, too. Sending you love. :)

    1. Your supper sounded excellent too! Fried squash is awesome. No doubt about it.

  3. Even the governors who are letting their states through the net, one fish at a time, are bowed to the ground at the cost in lives. As we all should be, and take it upon ourselves as much as possible, to stick with the simple life. Yes, go to work. Do not go to the department store, the movies, the beach, the you know what. Just practice what we've learned.

    1. I just heard someone on NPR say that it might take two months for the results of these damn openings to really smash us in the face. Great. This is never going to end.

  5. what a lovely dinner with your squash and your handsome gardener. ;-) partially (if not more) to thank for that bounty! Yes, your state is whacked out, no doubt. At least I can say I'm (so far) happy with Gavin....... he hasn't bowed to anyone yet at this point and seems to be trying his hardest to keep us on the right track. Cooling for you? shoot, we are heating......and 90's don't sit well with me, but that's what we have. Finished my window washing/screens today......and I'm so happy I at least accomplished that

    1. Our governor is a Trump ass-licker. That's the obscene truth of it. He doesn't give a shit about the people in his state. I mean- that's the only conclusion we can draw.
Yay for you on the window and screen washing! That is huge!

  6. Your squash is beautiful! I don't know what's wrong with people.

  7. I have been so down lately. It seems like there are more people that act like this whole pandemic is just made up and that drives me crazy. Our state is starting to open up and people act like nothing is wrong yet the number of cases keep going up. Somehow people don't seem to believe the numbers. I guess we all just have to depend on our own common sense.

Your squash is beautiful. Much better looking than anything I've seen in the store for a long time.

    1. I think that local papers should start publishing more pictures of people in the hospital. I'm serious. With faces blurred if necessary. Or personal stories. Something to bring the facts home to the people who want to believe this is all bullshit.

  8. It's not over and won't be over for quite some time. I'm glad you two are being cautious . Sending hugs and love.

  9. Oh, brother. I didn't realize Florida had reopened restaurants. You all ARE an experiment -- that's exactly right. I suspect we're going to open up a bit more here next week, but I doubt sit-down restaurants will be opening. I think a lot of people feel like this threat is exaggerated. Just Monday I passed graffiti that said "Covid-19 is a scam."

It's amazing how quickly squash grows. It's kind of alien. And yes, that Fauci article was interesting. Have you read the one on Mitch McConnell? It will make you want to tear your hair out. (It did me, anyway, but of course I don't have any hair.)

    1. Well, they're putting conditions on the restaurants like only 25% occupancy and tables have to be so far apart...etc. It's still stupid.
A lot of folks want to believe this is all some made up conspiracy.
      Squash IS alien that way.
I did read the article on McConnell. Good god.

  10. I've never been a big socializer or shopper and we only eat out maybe 5 times a year so no, we are not going out in that big bad world, not til there's a vaccine. I will miss the occasional movie in a theater but I'll just watch whatever on my little ole TV. our Republican governor is opening up Texas but no thanks. infections and deaths are still increasing and now I guess they will go through the roof. I really want to get this house thing done so I can focus on getting my garden back and growing food again.

  11. I agree with Steve, seems like Florida is really one big experiment. So sad because it will surely cost so many lives unnecessarily!

  12. At least Florida is a red state so the orange idiot will be forthcoming with aid should the state need it. Blue states are fucked and on our own. How did this nation get so divided? I would love to know how you make a squash casserole. The squash Mr. Moon grew are things of beauty. I hope you feel less low by now. The mood ebbs and flows as the surreality of everything presses in. It's even weirder that you cant see what's different with your eyes. But we feel it in our bones. Love to you, dear friend.

    1. I sort of made up my casserole last night. Which is mostly how I cook, as you know.
We do feel it in our bones. It's so true.

  13. I just watched a video with Judy Mikovits. I'm not sure if you've heard of her - I certainly have. I'm aware your conspiracy theory alert will kick in when you hear it, but this woman is as educated and intelligent as any scientist. And I'm not so sure it's possible to think of Fauci as a good man when you hear about what she has to say about him.

A lot of this information is hard for me to swallow too, and I balk against it. I don't want it to be right. My gut tells me it is, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1l5354hYmtk&feature=youtu.be&t=978&fbclid=IwAR1LO2ZXJzw3RWJI9sqG5Dxwph_Krm3EPz9SwInP3XRgADAeDBlCyMyJsg4
