The Dregs Of Summer Ennui

That is one of the worst pictures I've ever taken but there you have it- the first hurricane lily of the season that I've seen in my yard. It's bloom isn't fully opened yet but it will be soon and I feel certain that many more will be popping up here in the expected and unexpected places. I also noticed that the first blooms of the firespike are beginning to turn scarlet. Since I moved here, I have rooted and planted many firespike plants but I get no real credit for that. I did not realize how easy they were to root until I cut some one fall when they were at the glory of their blooms and put them in a vase of water and realized about a month later that not only were they still alive, but that they had sent out roots in the vase and I just kept them there until the danger of frost was over and then planted them and they did great and I realized that this is a plant which longs to live and the hummingbirds love them and why not?

Here's another thing that happened today:

I got five eggs! All of them from a nest. Can you see how each one of them is different in shade, shape, and size? I am still waiting with huge anticipation to see what color eggs Pansy and Eggy Tina will lay.

And those were the two most exciting events that happened in my life today.
Without a doubt.
This is sort of sad, isn't it?
I've just felt aimless and a bit listless. I did go to the grocery store and I swear, it took me forever to figure out the simplest things. First of all, I had to decide what to cook for supper. I am just so absolutely OVER making that decision. I don't mind cooking the supper at all. I enjoy that, in fact. But trying to decide what to cook is killing me. I know I am not alone in this.
I have probably been on the deciding and cooking end of suppers for at least forty years. Yep. You read that right. Forty years of cooking supper for me and others, often having to respect and incorporate the different dietary needs and choices of others and of myself. I can cook vegetarian, vegan, low-fat, no-sugar, no-white flour, etc, etc, etc.
I can cook Southern, I can cook hippie. I can cook Southern-hippie! I can cook soul and simple and clean and occasionally I can cook fairly damn gourmet. I can cook game and I can cook fish brought home from the seas. I can do casseroles and I can do soups. I can cook fifties housewife and update it to make it healthy.
I really can cook.
But sometimes...Jesus.
So I finally decided in Publix that tonight we are having trashy tacos with ground venison. I made these a few months ago and they were so delicious that I haven't forgotten how much we loved them. El Paso taco seasoning will be involved.
I decided at the store that since I had tortillas in the cabinet I would use those instead of the actual crunchy fried taco shells which was probably a mistake. When I got home and checked the expiration date on them I discovered that they had expired quite awhile ago but I am hoping for the best.
Fuck it. I doubt we'll die.
We are also going to have canned chili beans and packaged Mexican rice mix.
Father forgive me. I have sinned.
Or will have sinned.
If I open the tortillas and discover that they are too old and inedible, I will send Mr. Moon down to the convenience store to buy tortilla chips and we will have nachos.

I have no shame and I am not ashamed.

Oh dammit. I forgot to buy sour cream. I do have some nice Greek yogurt and we can use that but it's so...healthy.
Oh well.

Some days are just best regarded as write-offs.

Oh my god. I just saw Liberace have two-second sex with either Viv or Vera.

Tomorrow? Brunch with the kiddies. I haven't seen Owen in at least a week and a half. He's probably taller than I am now.

I'll let you know.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. We have tacos about once a week and have noticed the El Paso taco shells have gotten smaller. They are almost too small to make a good taco.

We are ordering fish and chips tonight. The ultimate fuck it. Too tired to cook. Don’t care that it will clog my arteries.

What has Owen been up to ? I guess he’s growing up and having a life of his own. *sigh*

    1. If you could order fish and chips in Lloyd I would do it tonight.
Owen is doing well and yes, he's growing up!

  2. I, too, love to cook but hate HAVING to think of things cook day after day. And since it involves at least a half day to get to a restaurant and back (or grocery store for that matter), we cook nearly all our meals from scratch. But, Dennis is a good cook and we have only to cook for the 2 of us most of the time. I bet your tacos turn out fine as long as the shells aren't rancid.

    1. The tortillas were fine. I just heated them up and they tasted good. Sometimes I wish I lived in a place where I could just walk to the market every day and be inspired by what looked freshest. Doesn't that make good sense?

  3. Yes! We're both just sick of it! I don't mind cooking, I just wish there was an app that would know what we'll eat and once a week it would send me a menu for the week. Is that asking too much?

    1. Obviously, it must be or someone would be doing it.
      Dang it.

  4. One way to solve the “what to have for dinner” dilemma — Keep a list of dinners you cook over the next 3-4 weeks. Write them up on 3x5 cards, and when you have 20-30 of them, put them in a box and pull out one each day, and that’s what you have. Pull them out until you have used all of those, then shuffle and put them back in the box.

When you think of one you forgot, add it.

It helps, and you can skip pulling a card on nights where someone makes a request or brings home fish/game to cook.

    1. Now see? That's a really good idea. I'm going to go buy some index cards. Thank you!

  5. I'm with you on the daily grind of having to think of something to cook. Not that I can't cook...... I enjoy it but I just get weary of the *thinking* of it, as you do at times. Yes, Owen is at the age where he is becoming more *manly* with each passing day.

    1. Odd, isn't it, how deciding what to cook is so much harder than doing the actual cooking for some of us?

  6. I had a fake burger from Costco for a late lunch that was terrible but the veggies from the garden were just fine. Dinner was movie popcorn with brewers yeast and some random nuts.

And homemade kombucha. Its ok, I'll eat better tomorrow. Maybe.

    1. Well, all of that sounds good to me except the Costco burger. And not badly balanced, either!

  7. I hate deciding what to cook. The big guy was off for a week in June and I was working. Each day he decided what was for supper and bought the ingredients. When I got home I just had to cook, it was so easy and made both of us happy. I usually cook because I'm a better cook than him and I'm a picky eater. Works for both of us. Now I take Fridays off though and it's free for all Friday. I will have a bowl of cereal or whatever I feel like and he usually gets takeout, even though he can cook and tells everyone he's a good cook:) He's like a big kid sometimes and that's what I love about him.

    1. "...even though he can cook and tells everyone that he's a good cook..."
      Love it!
I bet he makes lovely meals.

  8. This made me laugh.

Yes, I still can't believe we have to decide what to cook every. Single. Night.

(My husband does it a few times a week but even still, it is continuous torture.)

    1. My husband hasn't made us a meal since the last time I got some dental surgery. Pretty sure about that. And he made us chicken pot pies from the frozen food section which are about my favorite things to eat so that was awesome. Oh- he does grill occasionally. Of course.

  9. The idea of liberace having two-second sex with anyone is just really funny. I'm picturing all those sequins and lace in frantic copulation! Love the variety of eggs you got!

  10. yeah, the deciding is the biggest pain. but, I don't so that now either! have not seen any sign of the surprise (hurricane) lilies but I often don't as I think the bulbs here are very old and I only get one or two when I do. going to have to get some new ones. my firespike has yet to bloom and it has just now started to grow remaining the same size since it came out in the late spring all summer! and I keep it watered.

    1. Hmmm...bulbs can get old? That makes sense to me.
My firespike never gets too big and I blame that on the lack of sun. Of course.

  11. Those eggs are gems! I would blow them out and string them up, so pretty.I love that you can and still do cook. I used to, but now there is no body to cook for so...toss it in the wok and call it dinner. (still on my google mission, by the way)

    1. I doubt I'd ever give up cooking. I really do love doing it. I should use my wok more.

  12. 'What's shall I make for dinner?' is such a tyranny. I hate it. A friend suggested this, once: http://www.whatthefuckshouldimakefordinner.com/
I think it might appeal to you :)
