Cat Tale

Last night, just as I was about to get in bed, Maurice began to freak out and she held her back left leg up in the air and made horrible cat noises and twitched her yellow tail and would not let me touch her. I had noticed that since early evening she had been moving from place to place on the porch as if she were trying to get comfortable and I could see that her paw on that back leg was horribly swollen.

I texted Mr. Moon and he said things like, "Can you see a wound? Is there any bleeding?" and I couldn't and every time I tried to touch her she tore into me and there wasn't any bleeding and I finally wrapped her in a towel and made her a bed in a hidden place and she leapt away from that and ran somewhere, I do not know.
There was nothing to be done. We are not the sort of pet owners who take their cats to a vet at 10:30 on a Saturday night.
I felt terrible for her and helpless.

This morning though I was awakened by her. She jumped on the bed with me and snuggled and purred a bit and kissed me on the lips which she only does when she is very, very happy about something and now her paw is fine.

Was she bitten by something? She must have been. Bitten or stung. But obviously not a deadly serpent which I almost suspected last night.

Now she is sitting by me on the table, calm and grooming herself, and it is a most beautiful morning and Lily and the kids and Billy and Shayla and Waylon are going to come out for pancakes and I have a quiche in the oven too and I am in a perfectly good mood which is a sort of miracle for a Sunday morning.

Oh, Maurice. She is such a crazy insane cat with her eternally wounded face and her propensity for slicing and biting and why I should love her I do not know but I do.
If cats are indeed our familiars, she is the one I deserve and somehow the one I need.
I am so glad she is better.

I hope all is well in your world.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Poor Maurice! She has chosen you as her person. Such an honor. I'm glad she's okay. Guess what? I forgot how old I was (again). Don't telly son he'll try to put me in a HOME. Oh the pressures of an all month birthday.

  2. Well, I'm so glad whatever was wrong, it apparently cured itself! Animals are very resilient.

  4. My goodness! Those kitties keep us on our toes don't they? But the love I feel is too much not to put up with their idiosyncrasies. You are her person and she loves you!

  5. I wonder if they have an idea how much we love them. And do they care?

  6. Oh my, so glad the cat worked it out, I am a panic mother, off to the vet no matter what time of night or day, except for my one cat who out lived them all, He was a freak so I could never take him anywhere after his initial kitten shots. Perhaps going to the vet shortens kitties lives...that is the conclusion I must draw. Glad to see your cat is well.

  7. Poor Maurice! I'm glad she's good now. Denny and I are cat people too. Because cats are smart enough to know what you want them to do and then do whatever they wanted...we're that way too.

  8. I'm glad Maurice was better by morning. I remember when she showed up, and how she was right on time to climb into your heart. Happy Sunday. It sounds as if it's shaping up to be a very good day.
