My Eyeballs Are Healthy

Jessie sent this picture in a group text this morning and I think it may be my favorite picture of Levon ever. Or at least one of them. He was ready to help his Uncle Ben do some work on the porch. The only thing I don't like about it is that he looks about two years older there than he did when he left here about a month ago.
Excuse me? Did anyone ask my permission for this to happen?
No. No they did not.

So. Saga of the eye exam.
It wasn't bad at all. And the terrific news is that my eyes showed nothing but good healthy eyeballishness. Blood vessels looked good. Retina fine. The macula appears normal. My mother had macular degeneration so I worry about that.
They did not have to dilate my eyes. For the low, low cost of $34.99 (or something like that) they can take a high-tech picture of the eye which shows them just about everything they need to know. The doctor did use a special lens to look all around the periphery of my pupils and again, all looked well.
Turns out that my eyesight problem is not that my vision has gotten worse. It's a problem I have with my eye muscles. They do not want to both focus in the same place which understandably, causes double vision at distance. This has been going on for years and the last doctor I went to figured that out and they included a prism something-something in the prescription to help resolve the issue which helped for a long time but lately it's been getting worse, making driving and watching TV across the room and things like dance recitals frustrating as hell because my poor eye muscles are trying like hell to work together to make the left and right eye's vision come together the way they should and they just can't.
Poor eye muscles.
So, the doctor made a change in my prescription and that should take care of that.
I was so relieved when it was all over that I practically offered to have a baby for her if she needed that service (she doesn't, she has two children already- I always NEED to know about the lives of the doctors). But then of course it was time to pick out frames and I went into that with an open heart and open mind but the young woman helping me annoyed me so much that I finally said that I'd be back, paid up, got my prescription and left.
I sort of liked one pair (although now I'm glad I didn't get them) and she almost wouldn't let me choose them saying, "When you put them on you didn't go Yes! I love these!"
"Honey," I said, "At this point in my life there is absolutely nothing that I am going to put on my face which is going to evoke that particular reaction."
She just looked at me like, "Duh. You're about a hundred years old."
And she kept suggesting the highest dollar frames and I understand that. That is how she makes her living. But fuck me- even the lower-priced ones were not cheap by a long shot.
Worst of all, I didn't have any of my children there to help me decide. Jessie has been doing that for me for years and years. Probably since she was about four which is when I started trusting her fashion-and-beauty advice. I tried sending her a few pictures but my reception there was terrible. And Mr. Moon had dropped me off and then gone to the office and wasn't back yet so I just couldn't do it alone.
Maybe one of the kids will go to Costco with me tomorrow. I'll see what they have. I know that you can order very fine frames online for a lot less money but I can't figure out how you can really know how you'll look in a pair of glasses without trying them on.
Anyway. That's my story.

When Mr. Moon picked me up it was almost two so we decided to go get lunch and we went to a very locally-owned place that serves seafood and he ordered a shrimp basket and I ordered a shrimp sandwich and for some reason it took them over forty minutes to get us our food and there were only two other occupied tables in the restaurant. The food was great but by the time we got it we were over the whole experience.
I hate it when that happens.

But all is well and I've picked some beans and tomatoes and I've got the bed made up with clean sheets and here are some chick pictures.

Look at all those little tail feathers growing in!

The possible barred rock baby. He/she has such a pleasant expression.

And later on in the day, Jessie sent another picture.

Carpenter Levon turned into Polar Bear Levon on the trampoline.

Ah! If only all of us could be so flexible in our life styles. What glory to be three years old and open to the entire human range of possible personalities and dreams!

Happy Friday, y'all.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. I hate the sales aspect of getting glasses. I need them to see distances. Stop trying to upsell me. I only wear my glasses to drive and the salesperson tried to persuade me to get daily disposable lenses.

I know you will get what you need and what you want but these encounters are unnecessarily stressful

    1. They are. And I do wear glasses all day, every day so I want them to be comfortable and sturdy and not look horrible. Beyond that- not much.

  2. glad exam went well....minus new frames....but that will happen. Maybe Lily can accompany you to help? And Levon, lordy- he does look like he grew massively in the last 2-3 weeks! And so did your chicks! Happy Martini Friday, you deserve it!

      The martinis were very fine.

  4. YOu should print and frame that photo of Levon. Oh my goodness, he's sweet.

I was telling a patient about you the other day and your chickens. The patient was a chicken farmer. I didn't realize that the chickens we eat only live for eight weeks. That's a very short life. I was telling him about how much you love your chickens.

    1. Eight weeks? I didn't realize that either. I knew it was ridiculously short but that's crazy. Did your patient say that I sounded like a nutter?

    2. Not at all. And I don't think you're the only one who loves chicken. I think there is a lot of chicken love around:)

  5. frames are pricey but if you really like what you choose they will last for another hundred years- maybe...I have to wear them for a while to decide if I love them, if they are comfortable and not heavy. My Elizabeth Warren frames would have lasted over ten years butI decided purple is my thang, and life is way too short to be so conservative.

I think I picked out some glasses I will like.

  6. I have double vision too! I have had it for a very long time but it has gotten worse of course as I have gotten older. Now the prism would have to be so thick, I cannot see well with the prism in the glasses so I just get glasses without prism and tilt my head to the right when I watch TV to line things up. Or I close one eye if I need to.
I went to Lens Crafters and got their cheapest frames and it still comes out to a lot of money but I like them.
Levon needs to slow down with his growing up! I do love his many outfits tho!

    1. I close one eye too and it's so annoying, isn't it?
I doubt the glasses at Lens Crafters cost nearly as much as they do in some places. Like...the place I was in yesterday.
Yeah. Levon does need to simmer down now.

  7. I wear glasses all day every day as well, and I've had luck recently with Warby Parker. They'll send you FIVE pairs to try on and see which ones you like. I've used them for everything except my progressives, and I've been really happy with how they've come out.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Well, part of the problem is that I need the progressives AND I have severe astigmatisms to correct AND the prism thing so I don't even know if they could fill my 'script. I should check into that.

      Delete
    2. Actually, I have all that except for the prism thing, so you're right. I've only ordered central vision glasses from Warby Parker, and I did that during the pandamnic when I was at home looking at my computer doing virtual teaching all day. I get my progressives and astigmatisms fixed in glasses each year at my optometrist and it's obscenely expensive. Maybe I should try Costco?

  8. Good luck with this. It seems all frames are pricey these days.

    2. Frames have always been pricey to my recollection.
You know, e, that's what I thought about Levon in that picture too. That this is what he's going to look like when he's older.

  9. I agree with you about Levon.....I didn't recognise him until I read a bit further. I thought it was one of the cousins! Those chicks are growing fast too.
I am lucky re specs. I have " normal" eyes and only need reading glasses that I buy for £1 at Poundland. I have a pair for every room in the house.( and some in the car and handbag) They are so well made and last for years. I had my cataracts done a few years ago, so distance sight is no problem. Hope that you manage to choose some frames that you will be happy with.

    1. You are VERY lucky! These days, people without vision problems (except for the normal aging things) are few and far between. I know that having poor vision has affected my life in ways I don't even know.

  10. What a perfect picture of your serious little Levon. He sure does look grown up! Glad all is well with the eyes and the chick pics are just what I needed.

    1. Chick pics! NUDE chick pics! Well, they are dressed in feathers.
Levon's casual stance in that picture is what knocks me out. "Yep. I'm here to build a house. Should be ready in a few days."

  11. Long waits in restaurants piss me off too. If only they had said at the beginning that you would have to wait forty minutes for your food. You might have gone somewhere else. When I saw the first picture I did not recognise Levon. It may have been the goggles that did it.

    1. If they had told us forty minutes we DEFINITELY would have gone somewhere else. Jesus.
The goggles do change Levon's looks a bit, don't they?

  12. It's shocking how much older Levon looks in those pictures. I would have mentioned it even if you hadn't! He must have hit a growth spurt recently or something!

I'm glad your eyes are okay. The last time I picked out new frames the young woman helping me pissed me off in exactly the same way as yours did. People hovering over me commenting on how something looks on me makes me anxious and I just want to grab something and buy it and get the hell out of there.

    1. Snooty little white girls should not be employed to help people pick out glasses frames. Sorry but that's what I think based on many years of experience.

  13. that is a great picture of Levon. about the only thing good with my eyes is that the cornea is healthy, that and I don't need glasses thanks to the improvement from the developing cataracts. but, you know, macular degeneration. I've finally gotten used to wearing sunglass all (most) the time. early morning, late afternoon or if I'm working in the shade, I don't. my sister developed the same problem as you and her new prescription has that same prism thingy in it.

    1. Healthy corneas is something! Macular degeneration and cataracts seem to be part of aging, don't they? Just another lovely thing to look forward to.
I'm looking forward to having glasses that help correct the eye muscle thing better. It's so frustrating.

  14. Ha, last time I bought glasses it took me about 30 seconds flat to chose the frames. I told her I like the ones I've got so what have you got that looks like these? She told me she'd never known anyone pick out glasses so quickly. I'm pretty much the same with everything actually - go with what first stands out at you. And while I wouldn't want to be 3 again it would be lovely to be so open to the world and having fun wouldn't it. Lovely pictures of Levon - he looks like he's having a wonderful time!

Levon IS having the best time. August, too. They may never want to come back to Florida!

  15. Wow, Levon did look so much older in that first photo. Foreshadowing. Luckily, the second photo of him on the trampoline pulled him back from the future. :)

Glad you survived the eye exam. Good luck picking out glasses. I got prescription sunglasses at Costco several years ago. Decent prices. I cannot go outside or drive without sunglasses--even on overcast days. My eyes a very light intolerant.

    1. Yes. Levon looked more like himself in that polar bear get-up.
Wow. That must be SO difficult, being light intolerant! You poor thing.

  16. That is an AWESOME picture of Levon. It definitely captures his personality. (The first one, I mean, although the polar bear shot is good too.)

It sounds to me like someone from the restaurant had to run to Costco to buy some shrimp!

Glad the eye exam didn't detect anything scary.

  17. I think Levon needs an agent. What a cool kid.

  18. Oh I know what fancy machine you are talking about at the eye doctor. I pay every year for that and consider it money well spent. No dilation and then they have a historical record they can look at year to year to see any changes that occur. You helped me remember to make my eye appt too which I've just done, so thank you!
