Just Pictures, Mostly
I have GOT to get out there and walk before the temperature and humidity conspire to take me out like a cornflake in a cup of boiling milk. But here are a few pictures.
What? Every chicken coop doesn't have a hanging basket of periwinkles?
The oak-leaf hydrangea is just purely snowy this year. I want an entire forest of them.
My Mother's Day orchids and bromeliads continue to bloom and delight me. I set them outside on the table in the back yard where my eye lights on them a hundred times a day.
And then, perhaps the very most exciting thing for me of everything growing here in my yard- from this seemingly dead, dry husk of a last-year's frozen Australian Tree Fern
Is growing this:
And this:
Ah. Patience is its own reward.

It is humid here too. I like that the bromeliad is growing.
ReplyDeleteSyd- And here I sit. I think I am just waiting for the torture to ramp up to ten.
ReplyDeleteIf I were a chicken I would feel very la-di-da in your lovely coop; every one should have a hanging basket of flowers, I believe.
ReplyDeleteDo you mean to tell me that your orchid is re-blooming? I got an orchid, but its beautiful flowers are dropping one by one, and despite my best efforts, I know I'll never get it to bloom again. Orchids drive me nuts.
ReplyDeleteKori- Those ungrateful chickens want out of their beautiful coop as quickly as they can get every morning. They rush the door when I open it and run to see if there's any catfood available in the cat's dish. And then proceed to scratch and take dirt baths all day. They couldn't care less about those flowers in their coop.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth- I think it's merely STILL blooming. Not reblooming. But knowing me, after it blooms, I'll just tuck it in a corner somewhere and continue to water it and hope it blooms again next year. We shall see. I have no experience with orchids at all. I'll probably take the bromeliads out and repot them.
You know you have to talk to Danielle and Allegra about orchids.
ReplyDeleteI just have to check: when Mr M was building the chicken coop, someone said something about it being a Coop de Grace, right? We couldn't have missed that one.
Farty and I took a walk around the yard last night to take inventory. We picked some deep purple lilacs, he decided that Grandpa needs to bring the 'aw' (saw) over to cut down the storm damaged white lilac tree, and soon we'll have peonies. The mums didn't make it through this winter for some reason. But we planted marigolds and hostas, which are pretty sturdy despite 2 year old hands wielding the shovel.
ReplyDeleteYour orchids are gorgeous. Orchid is my favorite scent, after wild plum blossom.
I like how I get a sneak peek of my future looking at your blog. A virtual time machine.
ReplyDeleteI mean, my hydrangeas just aren't there yet.
But they will be.
In our parallel universes: my tree fern is just unfurling its first, and only at this point, spring frond from a lifeless looking brown stump. I wasn't going to give up on it either.
ReplyDeleteAnd I Want an oak leaf hydrangea! Been lusting after some in a yard down the street here.
But I am in CA, where we don't often have heat+humidity this time of year. Though we did get another good rain yesterday. Strange but Great for the garden.
Do some writing in the cool of the house in the afternoon? That is my plan for here, on the other side of this mirror. Kisses...N2
ah ms moon...you cant believe it..each time you post those flower pictures i m like glued to the screen and imagine all the wonderfull things i would grow when i would live in your area..i..need..heat..and i love the humidity...i do..i swear..its true
ReplyDeleteJo- I don't really plan on getting into the orchid growing thing. I was just gifted with this one and hope to keep it alive. If it ain't tough, it's gonna die.
ReplyDeleteRachel- I love gardening with children. I'm already showing Owen things in the yard and the garden. He isn't paying attention...yet. But he will!
Nancy C- Be patient!
N2- I thought surely that poor thing was dead as a doornail. Why is so thrilling to see this rebirth? I do not know. GET SOME OAK LEAF HYDRANGEAS! If your neighbor grows them, so can you.
Danielle- Then you should definitely more to North Florida.
I am quite jealous of both your exotic fern AND your coop. Fancy AND functional.
ReplyDeleteSarah- We can ALMOST grow those ferns here. I should have brought it in this winter instead of just wrapping it up and hoping for the best.
ReplyDeleteAnd my husband built that coop. Didn't he do a great job?
Thanks for sharing the beautiful pictures today. I'm researching models to buy a new camera. Would you mind posting what kind you use? Your photographs are truly wonderful!
ReplyDeletecurly ferns always remind me of my time in new zealand. they were EVERYWHERE.
ReplyDeletegreat photos!
E- It is a Cannon Power Shot SX20.
ReplyDeleteNotjustafemme- I think I would love New Zealand.
I got the Moms a damn orchid for Mother's Day, too. Clearly, it was a really original idea.
ReplyDeleteThe last picture looks like an underwater sea creature or something.
