A Tiny Dream


I dreamed last night that the best way to lose weight and stay there was to eat small amounts of the real things. Real butter, specifically, and milk with fat in it, etc. That all the fake stuff was just fooling our bodies and making them hungrier and hungrier and holding on to whatever calories we did take in, storing them as fat because our bodies think they are starving.

Do you suppose this is true?

I think it may be.

Of course, if we actually had to churn our own butter (and milk the cows and tend them too), the equation would be completely different.

  1. Actually, you're brilliant. I've been doing a lot of reading on this. I'm big on whole foods and etc. Our bodies weren't made to recognize and process all these "fake" foods. It's foreign. Bravo Ms. Moon! Your dreams are smarter than most people :)

  2. I'm sure all that crap is bad for us. I eat nothing processed. The key is the small amounts and I have not been able to convince myself what small means. : )
    I make my own butter, but I cheat with a KichenAid!

  3. That's what the French do. Small portions of real food. They don't have the problem with obesity that we do.

  4. I think there are studies to back this. I have heard on NPR some report about the fake sugar products actually making our body crave sugar because it recognizes the sweet taste, so it expects the calories, which do not follow... so... there you go. You're a genius! Ok, you're really really smart. :-)

    Thanks again for the yogurt and other goodies. He was able to keep down the yogurt and a Mier eggwich this morning. yahoo!

  6. I believe this is absolutely true. That's why I said skip the low fat Pringles! I don't think our bodies know what to do with all this tweaked "food". At my house we only drink whole milk, eat regular butter, and NEVER remove the skin from chicken. Part of my woolly mammoth thinking. We eat Oreos and ice cream but NEVER sugar or fat free.

  7. since I truly believe that margarine is only one more step away from plastic, this makes sense to me. We eat very few processed foods; it is the AMOUNT I have a hard time with.

  8. I am European and only eat the real stuff. Real butter, milk with fat, olive oil on everything, chocolate every day. A glass of wine with dinner. Real, homemade doughy bread. Moderation is key. The good stuff, yet just a little every day. And I still fit in my high school clothes (although why I would want to wear them is something else) even though I am well into my 30's..

  9. I was just reading about this same thing the other day. I've been trying to tell my brother for years, who is a big fan of "heart friendly" margarine, that people have been eating butter for_ centuries_ so I'm sticking with butter. Besides, once you taste French butter, especially the stuff with the big sea salt in it, the bread just becomes the "beurre conveyance" as my friend LC once said in Pareee =oD.

    Step 1. Eat only real stuff. Step 2. Walk, do not take the car. That'll keep the portions smaller because you won't want to carry it all home.

  10. I find myself at the grocery store now reading labels. I am surprised by bread most of all! When you make it homemade there are so few ingredients but the look at any brand at the store and there are so many. I find myself looking at meat and poultry..where was it grown, what was it fed...I am trying to eat better..and smaller...

I think you're right, and so do some physician authors I've read, especially in Eat, Drink and be Merry by Dean Edell and Eating Well by Andrew Weil - I went back to whole dairy and look out for hydrogenated anything these days. I try to eat fresh and whole and not too much meat. I think a lot about the work we don't do to find or make our food and how asynchronous modern life has become. Might explain my obsession with the past. Or your blog!

    I'm looking for balance and a clean kitchen too, so if I'm not around I want to be....see you soon!

  13. Aw. My father has this little silver milkmaid children's rattle... a little sweet faced girl. And I want it so badly - the story goes he gave it to me as a baby and I naturally threw it out of the cot. And that was the end ofthat. ]

    I hope, when he dies, his wife will be gracious enough to let me have it.

    But, when I scrolled down the first cm of the picture, I instantly thought of it, and was delighted to see it really was a milkmaid - maybe what the little girl would have grown into!

  15. oh yes. this is very true. very verifiable. the other ingredient to svelte is exercise, and you know this, too!

    seriously: we are brilliant, insightful, intuitive. important knowledge, especially when the ego is taking a back-seat!

  17. In 1977 I got myself thrown out of a symposium in NY City because while some doctors was lauding margarine as beneficial for the heart when it came my time to speak I told people that in the final analysis they were eating something made by Shell if they ate that.

    Mammals are not made to process already processed food. Cows have as many stomachs as they need to get what is beneficial for them and the rest goes into the soil to make things grow. We have only one and it is not designed to alter our natural process by any means I know of.

    Nothing processed here. If I have a couple - more like 10 pounds now - over my ideal weight, it is because I completely believe as Julia Child said, that I rather have a teaspoon of chocolate mousse than a bowl of Jell-O. What is that stuff anyway? we only use leaf gelatin here as well. End of rant. Mary dear, you are spot on.

  21. Yes! I believe that, too. I never buy the "diet" stuff either. Just low fat milk, but then they've just skimmed the fat off, right? I don't trust artificial sweeteners or any of that crap.

  23. I love, love, love that picture. And I imagine your dream, from the wise and deep subconscious that is yours, is true. I've long since quit putting fake sugar in my coffee and eat butter, too. For me the challenge is AMOUNT.

  24. I agree completely, in fact, I'm sure that I've read articles on the very subject you brought up. I'd love to get rid of High Fructose Corn Syrup. I want SUGAR. Real Pure Cane Sugar! Soda is my thing. It's what's making me soft around the edges. . . .

    Bethany- Well, if we ate non-adulterated foods like more lima beans- we WOULDN'T eat too much. It's easy to over eat say, smoked almonds, but raw almonds? A few will do.

    Michelle- Ah, I only eat a few of those Pringles a week. They're my junk food. But your family must have a skinny gene! You do. You look like you're twelve. If Mr. Moon and I ate Oreos and full-fat milk, we'd be humongous. But I don't like milk anyway. But I would eat Oreos if I could get away with it.

    Kori- I think it's the problem we all have.

    Angie- I bet you walk a LOT. And eat a lot of vegetables.

    N2- Good points! But if I walked to the grocery store, I'd have to take a tent to spend the night in on the way there and on the way back!

    Ellen- And that's why I make most of our bread.

    Magnum- Yes. That would be wrong.

    Mwa- We should all get used to NO sweeteners except fruit. However, I doubt this will happen.

    Rebecca- I recently heard soda referred to as "liquid candy." That may help you.

    Nancy- Yep. We sure don't need to eat things more than a degree or so removed from that. If at all.

  27. We are on RAW MILK products now in this house! Butter, Cream, Milk etc. "Raw Cow Milk - NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION” it states on the jug - hysterical! We feel like dealers meeting in parking lots and sneaking home with our contraband. Pasteurization is for the convenience of the supermarkets. Longer shelf life.
