It's Cold

This is what Pearl, my fourteen-year-old boxer dog does all day long. She sticks her head under things. She has her stations of the cross, as it were, in every room and she follows me around and sticks her head under whatever she can find in that room. This is the dining room and as you can see, she is sticking her head under some dried palm fronds. In the kitchen, she lets the hand towel on the oven door touch her head.
I don't know why she does this but she does.
The palm fronds, the kitchen towel, a tablecloth.
While the Christmas tree was up she broke half the ornaments by standing with her head under the branches and the tree skirt. She stands quietly for awhile and then she either gets an itch and must scratch or else she just goes into some sort of spasm and whoops! there went another ornament.
Bless her old doggie heart, my Pearl.
We all get old and weird. I know I am getting weirder, the older I get. I don't stick my head under palm fronds, but I do want to keep my head under this roof. Especially right now. It's freezing outside. I think I need to go heat some water to pour in the chicken's water so they can drink. Really- it's that cold here in North Florida today and supposed to get colder tonight.
We're not wired for this here. We are all big pussies about the cold and we wander around with as many clothes and coats on as we can get and we look at each other in bewilderment like, "How'd this happen?" much like Pearl looks when she suddenly loses her grip on gravity and all of her legs come out from under her.

All right. I better go take care of those chickens. I hear Sam out there, crowing for his hens to get UP! I am sure they are mostly still in the hen house, fluffed up and fine where they are but the man, oh, the man! He wants his morning fucking and he needs the hens for that.

Life in Lloyd where it's cold as a frozen bone outside and we are none of us prepared and don't want to get our head out from under the palm fronds, our funny little chicken asses off of the roost.

  1. Oh Ms Pearly, she is old a odd, but I love her so.

Hey, Mika used to say: "Winter is cooooold in Lloyd", and he was right. These old drafty houses are not made for this either. We are always walking around with layers, socks AND slippers!

    Funny post.

  2. I may have, at one point last night, feared that my toes had frostbite......pussies indeed!

  3. Sweet ol Pearl. What a pretty dog. I think if I knew her I would love her. My dog Buddy used to do that when he got old, well just sort of stand in corners. I like the idea of her praying the stations of the cross. Sorry about your ornaments and the cold.
Happy Monday Ms Moon from the little ol library that's just starting to warm up. Lots of children running around getting ready for story hour.
I just want to drink my coffee.
I think you might like the show Mad Men. Have you tried it?

  4. I dig Pearl.

Don't all men want morning fucking? Jesus. I don't want anybody even looking at me in the morning, let alone trying to hump me. My vag doesn't wake up until at least 1:00 in the damn afternoon.

Do stay warm. Cold sucks ass. I hate the Yankee North. It's colder than shit here today.

    Love you TONS.

  7. That is such an OCD thing to do. Your dog has OCD. That is funny. No, not funny. I've just never heard of it. It's like having to touch every door handle or not stepping on cracks in the pavement. (That's what I think anyway, but I am recovering from it myself so hey.)

  8. Hey Mary, I'm about to brave the cold. I can't move my arms and legs I have so many damn layers on. How'd this happen? :)

    Love you,

    Lis

  9. It was -2 here in Normal when I got up. I had forgotten there was a case of soda in our storage closet on the balcony and they all exploded. Happy Monday to me.

  10. Ha, I love that old sam. nothing like a morning fucking to get the old blood warmed up. Not that I want to try it, mind you; that is why I have an electric blanket and hot showers. and slippers. And a robe.

  11. Oh poor Pearl! The older I get the colder I get, and the more comfort I need.
What is it the male species??

  12. When are we all going to get a break from this cold madness????

  13. When I was growing up in Atlanta, we had a Great Dane, D.J., who as he got old did the exact same thing. He'd stand with his head under the palm fronds of some houseplant, stand there in all his huge great daneness. I wonder what that is but I am smiling at the memory of D.J.

    Love to you today!

  14. It's freezing here in my little house, but I'm wrapped in blankets and Baggy is keeping my feet warm. As long as it only lasts a few days, I can dig it.

  15. Made me think, I send a thank you card to a friend whom I realize I am beholden to because every single warm thing I wear in this house is because of her. My sappy mind is totally geared for summer and the reality of winter hits me hard every year. Even though I know it's coming I put it off...and don't buy warm clothes.

  16. I'm definitely getting weirder as I get older but I think it's mostly that I give less of a shit as time goes on.

Pearl seems like a sweet old girl

  17. I demand more Pearl pics. Lovely looking animal.

  18. Ms. Fleur- Well, we put in a bigger heater after we bought the place so we're pretty toasty in the house.
I tried to call you and then didn't get the beep!

Robin- We don't know how to act when it gets below fifty, do we?

Bethany- I think this is fairly common behavior for old dogs. Kathleen has a dog who does the same. No. I haven't watched Mad Men. Should I?

Ms. Bastard- You should definitely come here when the azaleas and dogwoods are blooming and it's still cold up there in Buttfuck. Hopefully, Pearl will still be with us. She can stick her head up your skirt. And you can watch roosters getting warmed up in the morning by having three-second sex with the hens.

Stephanie- That's how Sam DOES warm up.

Danielle- No, no, no! I will not go anywhere where there is that much snow! No! I won't do it! I can't take the cold. My blood is too thin! And yes, Pearl is sort of fun. And sort of whacked.
    But we love her.

Mwa- She also pulls at her food dish over and over again. She doesn't want to eat "old" food, I guess. Drives me nuts!

Lis- I don't know how this happened but I do not like it. Not one bit. Stay warm, sugar!

The Dish- What fun for you!

Kori- Well, it can be sweet if there's plenty of time and a good breakfast to follow.

Angie- I don't know but I'll tell you this- male humans and male chickens have a LOT in common.

Rebecca- Spring, probably. Although our crazy cold will only last for a while and will then disappear for another while. Thank God!

Elizabeth- I don't know. I have tried to figure it out but can't. It's just a dog thing, I guess.

    DTG- How was the soup?

Charlie- We just wear lots of layers here because we don't own many cold-weather clothes.
Not cost-effective. Mr. Moon is still wearing the wool coat he got in high school in Tennessee. It's a nice, warm coat and still in good condition.

Michelle- Well, that's it exactly. And Pearl is a sweet old girl.

Daddy X- Okay. I'll take more pictures of Pearl.

  20. Here's a theory. The transmission in our 13 year old Brittany - Beauregard - went out so his reverse stopped working. Sometimes we'd have to move furniture so he could stay in forward. Maybe Pearl's just trying to get it in reverse. We sure miss Beau. He had the best puppy dreams - running and doing a muffled "ruff (pause for several seconds) ruff" while he slept. And that dog would eat anything - he once ate a potholder and ALMOST an entire pair of gardening gloves. I say "almost" because he left a little smidgeon of the gardening gloves so that I wouldn't think I had lost them in the yard somewhere. It's a little keepsake. Such a thoughtful dog. Because his tail was cropped (he was a foster dog before we got him) we weren't prepared for the tails that the "new" puppies we got after Beau died have - we have a designated wag zone in our house below which nothing is placed so that where we don't have stuff wagged off all the time. Dogs: you gotta love them.

And what language are these verification words from? Noushin?

  21. Ok, this has nothing to do with anything in this post, but as I clicked on your comment and saw that pic of Owen from your last post, I decided he looks like Mr Moon. And needed to alert you about this I guess :)

  22. Not as chilly here in Gainesville, but still cold. Everyone here is acting like it's below zero and I'm walking about in sheer tights and one layer of socks. I don't get what all the fuss is about. Stay warm!

  23. Dogs are funny little things...we all have our quirks, and we accept our pets' quirks with great affection.

Thankfully, as we get older, with ourselves as well.

  24. Awww...I love boxers. I have no idea why he might be doing that, but your stations of the cross reference was perfect.

I like Jucie's idea about the reverse gear getting stuck.

    ReplyDelete
  25. That is kind of odd but definitely interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jucie- I don't think Pearl's reverse is broken. I think she just likes to stand around with her head under things. But she has never eaten gardening gloves. She does have those puppy dreams sometimes, though. Bless our old dogs' hearts.

SJ- You think so? Huh. I'll have to look more closely. I still think he looks like his daddy some but mostly himself.

Melissa- Funny that only a hundred miles or so should make such a difference but it does.
    You stay warm, too!

Nancy C- I hope we do.

Grasshopper- Boxers are mighty sweet but I have to say- not the brightest dog in the world.

    Joy- I ponder it.

  27. 35 degrees here now. 19 degrees here later. BBBRrrrr!

We did lots of huddling and snuggling in front of the fireplace last night and when the kids went to bed, that worked out nicely for us!
