When We Are Faced With The Primeval

That is the Buddha who sits in front of the house that burned. When I walked past it today I decided to take its picture. There was no one there to watch me do it, no one's privacy I was invading. Just ashes. And Buddha.

It's wild here in Lloyd this evening. It's just started raining again and we are having gusts of wind and flashes of lightening. Branches are  occasionally falling with a thud, sending a reflexive shock through my body, a straightening of the spine for sure. And to add to the the excitement, the frogs are singing frantically, as if to whip themselves into a frenzy. I would love to share a tiny video but for whatever reason, I can't seem to transfer video to YouTube anymore which is how I always got them here before. I just need to research that a bit.

I got a text this morning from the place where I go to get all of my diagnostic testing that I have an appointment tomorrow for an ultra-sound of my uterus. Good thing they texted me because although I had a vague memory of being told that I needed to get one in February, I was clueless about exactly when in February. It's just a follow-up since they changed my hormones. I am certainly not looking forward to this appointment but I'm not worried about it. And although of course I will be masked, I won't feel nearly as much anxiety about catching the virus in the waiting area, having had both of my vaccines with a good eleven or so days since the second one. I wonder how that will feel. I hope I get the same tech I got last time. She was so professional and thoughtful, too. You have to drink 32 ounces (i.e., a quart) of water an hour before the appointment time and HOLD IT and as soon as I'd gotten the part of the exam where my bladder had to be full, the tech told me I could go pee which was a relief.
Oh, the joys of being a woman!
So I'll be heading to town tomorrow morning and might as well stop off at Publix while I'm there and get the things on my list.
That'll be a fun day, right?

Today has been a domestic day. I walked and did laundry, took the trash and went to the post office. I've been working on supper on and off most of the afternoon. I've got a venison pot roast in the oven with carrots and onions, potatoes and green beans. And garlic. Lots of garlic. Venison is so lean that a roast has to be cooked for hours and hours to render it into tenderness. It's strange to think that in a few days I might be cooking on (and in) a new stove. I wonder if I will fall in love with it. I hope so. For what we're paying for it, it should be extremely love-worthy. One just never knows, though. The one experience I've had with a high-end stove was certainly a disappointment, as I've said before.
We shall see. And of course, this is all so embarrassingly a first-world situation.
I picked a beautiful basketful of greens for salads before the rain started and washed them four times. They are now wrapped in a dishtowel in the refrigerator and I'll put what I don't use tonight in a plastic bag for the next salads. Mr. Moon and I swoon a bit every night when we eat those salads and we always talk about how this is our favorite time of the year as pertains to the garden. Sometimes I make all vegetable salads and sometimes I make greens-and-fruit salads and they are all perfectly perfect. Sometimes I toast pine nuts or sesame seeds or pecans to throw in but however I make them I give them my full respect and attention because the greens deserve that.

Within the next day or two we will be planting the potatoes and sugar snap peas. I hope that this year we can figure out how to save some of the peas from the marauding chickens who love those sweet pods as much as we do. Actually, they love the vines as well. Chickens know what's good.

Suddenly, the wind has died down, the rain is letting up, and the sky has gone from dark gray to a sort of greenish-yellow, silver gray. Although it's almost seventy degrees now, it is supposed to drop down to 39 tonight which is quite tropical compared to what most of the country is experiencing. This storm we've just had came from the south while all of the cold is coming, quite obviously, from the north. This post, from our Ellen, is putting a whole lot of things in perspective for me. We usually get the weather that they get two days later but in this case, it doesn't look like we will. I don't know what I'd do if we were faced with temperatures in the low teens. I truly do not.

It's hard to keep up with life these days on every level. Or at least I find that to be true. I guess we just hold on and try to ride the waves.
And pray for no tsunamis, casting our spells and creating our charms as best we can.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. WOW the house fire and the buddha- , I would go right back there and save it, put it in my house for a lucky charm- or maybe that lucky charm brought the fire because maybe they were icky folks and needed a lesson! Maybe that! The story is a great one! It is a beautiful little statue...I think that is should be yours.
And I feel so much healthier just looking at your garden greens! OHHhh they are lovely! Good luck with your medical thing, Woman! You will be in my thoughts!

  2. That Buddha belongs where he is. I think the fire was probably caused by some sort of alternative heating situation which is tragic. It IS a beautiful statue, isn't it? My medical thing will be fine, I think. My lady parts have always served me very, very well. I am most fortunate there.

  3. I vividly remember those ultrasounds, gah the anxiety about that bursting bladder and knowing if I couldn't hold out, it was all to do again!

The Buddha looks significant in his place.

And I agree so much on the holiness of fresh green salads.
I trust you won't get the freezing weather, though it sounds quite dramatic anyway.

    1. It's an uncomfortable situation, isn't it?
Yes. Buddha must stay where he is.
Our greens are our joy! And we may get a few more freezes here but nothing like what they're getting in Texas!

  4. will think of you tomorrow as you try to hold that bladder together LOL! NOT fun. I'm sure all will be well. The greens are sublime..... and that Buddah......although yes- it *might* be where it belongs? I think it would grace your garden with great dignity and peace. Perhaps you will learn more as time passes.....as to who exactly belongs to the burny down house.....and whether you might acquire it?

    1. I think Buddha is exactly where it belongs. If I get a chance, I'll talk to a neighbor who might know what happened there.

  5. The piece of weather has covered so much of the country, but curled above you, holding the warm in. That's good.

    1. Exactly right! We are lucky on this one for sure!

  6. Hello Mary,

We rather like the thought of the Buddha watching over the remains of the burned out house. It gives a reassuring calm and peace which resonates so perfectly with what so many of us feel we need in these strange times.

And, how we envy your delicious looking 'leaves'. Salads here in Budapest can be rather dismal affairs as the ubiquitous flat lettuce is often all that is available with, perhaps, the odd iceberg lettuce if one is lucky. And, your ideas for what you can add to your salads sound very delicious.

Good luck at the hospital. All these events are somewhat stressful but all will be well.

    1. Thank you, Hattatts! I wish I could share my greens with everyone. We are so fortunate to be able to grow such riches in winter here. Much better gardening this time of year when we don't have to worry about the bugs and various plant diseases.
      My appointment was fine.

  7. Sounds like that greenish cast sky turned into a tornado up north of you in GA and a bad one in NC. Unbelievable weather system.

Your greens are looking good. Way too cold up here for planting anything. Have had snow, ice, freezing rain (more to come), but thankfully, nothing like TX.

    1. Yeah. I think you're right. We had tornado watches but none formed as far as I know around here.
Yep. You'd need a heated greenhouse to grow anything where you are.

  8. I agree ... that is a beautiful little Buddha and should remain in place until it is indicated by whomever that it can be moved!
Oh boy ... I need to make a trip to the store for some salad stuff ... we are dealing with super cold days and nights in S. CO, too ... I hate to go out when it is so bitter! Ugh!
If it warms up enough today ... I may venture out ... MAY is the operative word here! LOL

  9. Oh my gosh, I had to have the full bladder ultrasound while pregnant a couple times... Very very challenging. The buddha is perfection.

    1. At least I'm not pregnant now! I think that makes the procedure even worse.

    2. It was just about bearable as long as they didn't touch me!

  10. Your descriptions of your salad greens and the salads you make are making me hungry for a good salad. I will have to add that to my shopping list for the week (altho, store-bought can't be as good as your home-grown).
    Good luck with your ultrasound!

    1. I hate buying store-bought greens. There's just no comparison at all between even the nicest ones they sell at the store and what comes out of my garden. I'm spoiled.

  11. I love that Buddha! I hope someone adopts him. Or perhaps he will simply stay there and guard the wreckage.

I wonder why your bladder has to be full -- to distinguish it from the uterus on the imaging test? Hmmmm...

    1. Here, Steve. I googled it for you. I didn't really know!
"When sound waves move through the body, they “hit” different mediums, such as fluid and air, differently. A full bladder creates a reservoir of fluid that enhances the movement of sound waves through the abdominal cavity. This creates a clearer view of the structures that need to be observed."

  12. Oh I couldn't even think about trying to hold on to 32 ounces of water for an hour. Damn, one sneeze and I'd drown!

  13. I have a bone density scan tomorrow which I am going to reschedule...again. roads will still be too icy I think. oh, just got a text my appt is canceled. so many people still don't have power or water or both. I count myself lucky to have both. but damn, I am ready for this cold weather to be gone. I don't know how people live up north where it's like this more often than not. our houses just are built to accommodate this kind of weather.

    1. You're right- our houses are definitely NOT built for below freezing temperatures. I hope that it warms up for you soon.
And what a pain to have to reschedule your test. Blergh.

  14. That Buddha sitting Serenely in front of the house that burned, is just a perfect optic for summing up 2020 and so far, 2021. May we all have that Peace even in the midst of the rest as it's playing out badly.
