Party Time At Mer and Bop's

Last night we had an excellent martini-time chat with Lon and Lis, catching up on stuff, discussing world events, solving world problems, philosophizing and so forth. At one point, Lon said, "Can I ask y'all a question?"
"Of course," we said.
"Have your expectations about what you can accomplish each day changed since the pandemic?"
Oh. God. Yes.
We agreed that if we get one thing accomplished we feel as if it's been a successful day.

See that sock up there? That was my accomplishment today. I darned a hole in it. I've had a darning egg for many years but never actually used it and had to watch a YouTube video on how to darn and I didn't have actual darning thread (I used cotton embroidery thread) and that sock is so thick and wooly that it was like trying to mend a hole in a sheep, but I enjoyed it.

Mr. Moon got some potatoes planted and I did a little weeding. He also did some car business. Right now he's doing this.

The boyos are spending the night and just got dropped off. They are thrilled. Jessie got Levon a folding mat bed just like August's and he's excited. They'll both be sleeping in Mer and Bop's room and it will be a cozy night. I hope Levon sleeps past five. Jessie has called a moratorium on the no-gluten/no-dairy thing so we can have pancakes in the morning. Hurray!

And now I better get in there and make spaghetti. On my old stove. No gas guy today. I suppose this is good because I've now had time to go through the owner's manual. The model we got is so simple that there's really not that much to know. Here are the only two display lights on the whole thing.

Also note the toggle switch to turn the oven light on.
I do still need to figure out the difference between "roast" and "bake."

I suppose that eventually I will.

Y'all be cozy tonight too.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Hope this will be one of your last meals on the old stove......kiss it goodbye once the gas man comes to install new one! Martini's with Lon and Lis....sigh..... and your sock darning looks great! Childhood memories of my Mom darning socks with her beautiful wooden darning ball that was ancient even then.......darn (no pun there).....but when bro and I cleared out their house near end of life.....I looked for that darning ball high and low and alas, it was not to be found. I would have loved to have it. Enjoy your boys evening....and night.....

    1. Thank you, Susan. I am so sorry that you couldn't find your mama's darning egg. Perhaps one will find you sometime as you thrift-shop. That is how I got mine.

  2. That's a very good question to ask right now. I think we've adjusted a lot of our expectations in the last year.

Good you have a darning egg. Everything else doesn't work.

    1. I did look at a maraca today and thought, "Hummmm..."
It was a rather small one that I also got at a thrift store. And wooden!

  4. I bet that we are the last generation that even remembers darning eggs even if we don't use them.

    1. Well by golly, I paid for roast and I am going to use roast! (We shall see.)

  6. I have several pairs of socks with holes and zi have never darned a sock. I just let the toes stick out.

    1. It was sort of fun, Ellen. Plus, these are really good socks.

  7. I've never really understood what darning a sock IS, though I can kind of guess by seeing your example. I've mended holes in socks before, but I don't think I've technically darned them. (Certainly not with a darning egg.)

  8. Yay! Pancakes!

One of the ways in which I count my relative privilege in this world is I have never, of necessity (because it definitely would not be from industry) darned a sock. I wear it with the hole or else I throw it out.

    1. Well, exactly. But these are socks that Mr. Moon wears hunting when it's very cold or when the house is chilly and are thick and wooly so it seemed worthwhile to repair rather than toss.

  9. I remember my gran's old darning "mushroom" and I would love to have a shot at it. Failing that, I'd take schmoozing with my grandkids!

  10. I started darning my socks a few years ago because they only ever get holes in the toes. A darning egg would be helpful for sure. I was listening to the radio the other day and it was about shashiko. I thought of you.

    1. Thank you! Yes. I love that tradition of mending and have played around with it some.

  11. Now that I am retired, I do the same thing - I just pick one thing that I did accomplish and convince myself that I have been productive enough for the day! Grandsons visiting would definitely count as a productive event so you did a LOT today (darning AND visiting)! Lucky you!
