Laginappe

More items I am remembering from that long, long offering of delicious foods at Morrison's/Piccadilly's:

Strawberry shortcake, strawberry and blueberry cheesecake, German chocolate cake, coconut cake, white cake with chocolate frosting, apple pie, peach pie, cherry pie, lemon pie, tossed salad with dressing of your choice (Roquefort, thousand island, French, Italian, etc.), broccoli salad, spinach salad, congealed salad with vegetables, fruit, and marshmallows, shrimp cocktail (!), hamburger steak, fried snapper, fried shrimp, yellow rice, chicken and dumplings.

I am also remembering when I was a very, very poor hippie and my husband (not Mr. Moon) and I would scrape together enough money to go to Morrison's which was in the mall and wait in line, babies on our hips with all of the Baptists, AME's, Tallahassee High Falutin's, plumbers, teachers, FSU professors and everyone else in town who was craving good food for a very reasonable price. People would stare at my husband's long hair but would end up flirting with my cute babies. And when we reached the place where you got your tray and started sliding it down and making your choice of dishes for your supper, we were all one, joined and united by humanity, hunger and hot sauce, giblet gravy and cranberry sauce, au juice and eggplant casserole.

I must be hungry.

Let's eat.

  1. I miss those cafeterias. The food was good, especially the fried okra.

    1. I do too but I think that Morrison's was better than most of the ones I've gone to recently.

  4. I remember one in Melbourne we used to go to when it was Morrison's, after the one in Vero closed down. I always liked going there.

    1. Okay- this is how old I am, Kathy- when I lived in Roseland as a little girl, sometimes we would drive to Melbourne to a cafeteria called The Tradewinds. I remember it distinctly and it was much like Morrison's. Having a shrimp cocktail there was sort of like being in heaven.
