I Did Indeed Get What I Need

Believe it or not, I have not taken one picture today.

Well, that's a lie. I took a picture of some information on the CDC website to send to my husband about getting the covid booster and flu shot at the same time which I was hoping to do today. Glen said that he'd heard from a doctor he hunts with that it's NOT a good idea but the CDC and other medical sources online said it was fine unless you're getting the high dose flu shot which I figured I was not getting but when I got to Publix at the appointed time to get the flu shot and asked if I could get the booster at the same time they said, "No," because I needed to make another appointment for that.

"Can I make an appointment for like three minutes after I get my flu shot?" asked Ms. Smarty Pants.
"No," they said. "No same day appointments."

Sigh.

BUT, when I got the flu shot, I was told that it was indeed the high dose one because that's what they give all us old people over the age of sixty-five. And that they do not recommend getting that one and the covid booster at the same time but should spread them out over 72 hours. And then I felt really bad because the pharmacist was the only pharmacist and only immunizer there today and they were suddenly slammed with people waiting who had made appointments, and although I hadn't made a scene or anything when I was told that I couldn't get both shots today, I had obviously felt like that was ridiculous and so I tried to be as nice as I possibly could and said, "Thank-you," about ten times and did not complain about the shot hurting although it did.
But just a little bit.

So then I bought two turkeys, the Greenwise kind. "Greenwise" is Publix's house brand of foods that are mostly organic and don't have fake colors or flavors in them and the animal products are not given hormones and antibiotics, etc, etc. I always get the Greenwise chicken and it is so superior to the regular chicken and so for Thanksgiving- why not get the Greenwise turkeys? I asked Mr. Moon today if he would like to smoke a turkey for Thanksgiving and he said he would love to so one of the birds will be his responsibility and I will roast the other one because I basically only want one main thing from Thanksgiving and that's stuffing (not dressing) and you have to have a turkey in which to stuff it. I also bought the cranberries and an orange to make regular cranberry sauce and also the cranberry/orange/pecan relish which is actually my second favorite thing about Thanksgiving. The flavor of it is amazing but the colors are even better.

I'm glad I got those things bought because I've been having dreams about it being the night before Thanksgiving and I have not yet bought any of the food, including turkeys, to prepare for the dinner and the only store open is a Winn Dixie that has almost nothing in it. Like, maybe some celery and boxes of antihistamines.

After Publix I finally went to Joann Fabrics and got the material I need to make Maggie's name blanket. I was not happy at all with the choices but what can you do? I have a love/hate relationship with Joann because of all the seasonal crap they bring in and we all know how I feel about Christmas and it already looks like Santa's fucking workshop warehouse in there but I also love things like embroidery thread and markers and pens and paints and dyes and scissors and irons and knitting needles. I bought some of those, in fact. The knitting needles. And oh yes- embroidery thread.

And then I came home and tended to the pinto beans I started soaking last night and began cooking this morning along with the bread dough I made this morning after feeding the starter last night.
God, I love pinto beans. I truly love most beans but pintos are a primal and at the same time, celestial food to me. They are one of the first things I ever remember eating and I'm sure that when my mother made them she was broke and beans were all we could afford but damn- they were so good. And they still are.

So okay. Here's a picture of Jack that I took last night on the new chair.

It is officially Jack-approved. I swear- this morning when the sun was shining on the porch lighting that chair with glory, it reminded me of emeralds and one of the many colors of the sea in Cozumel on a clear day and the Emerald City, too. It's the most cheerful thing you can imagine.
It just purely makes me happy.

It's going to get chilly tonight and I am so grateful for a warm house and various ducks and ducklings to sleep under, not to mention that chonky cat who, after getting all of the petting I'm willing to give him, settles right up against my hip and we both fall asleep as warm and cozy as a woman and a cat can be in a bed when the man is away. Which is pretty darn warm and cozy.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. hmmm, I got the high dose flu and the covid booster at the same time in the same arm and I WAS FINE! I was a little sore and tired, but I had just spent the previous 3 days helping my friend pack and move her house, up and down stairs. Maybe that is the key - be so tired that you just don't even notice the shots!

  2. hope flu shot doesn't do you in........ I always take Tylenol after, but I confess I did not get flu shot (yet) this year. Not sure I will. Jack on the velvet green chair is sublime! And pintos....yes, my fave. My Mom was european, never saw or cooked a dried bean in her life.....so I didn't *get* pinto's until into my 20's when became a vegetarian (for 5 yrs). Still a staple in our house now, since hubby has 1/2 mexican/calif. native indian in his genetics....and he taught me how to cook them correctly, per his Mom. I've got venison veggie soup simmering all day today... Yum!

    1. The most important thing about cooking pintos for me is to make sure to cook down the liquid after the beans are done to create the gravy. The best.
We eat a lot of venison and veg soup around here, too!

    2. Also- I don't know about where you are but here the flu is just raging and it seems to be particularly harsh. That's why I made sure to get my shot.

  3. That chair- I want to wear it.
I have not fabric shopped for ages- my sewing machine is crap, plus having been a fabric whore for may years I still have loads that I might use in another lifetime. OR send it to you! There's an idea!

    1. I had a flu shot a month or so ago and an appointment Friday for the Covid booster. All should be well.
Jack certainly does that chair justice.

    2. Linda Sue- You HAVE sent me fabric and I love it. I feel so bad I never taught my kids to sew. Well, I think I taught May or else she taught herself. She knows how to do it.

    3. Joanne- Good for you for getting those shots!
Jack looks good no matter where he naps. At least I think so.

  4. Ah, there is nothing happier than a tuxie on a green chair.
What is dressing and why does it have to be said that it is different from stuffing? Stuffing goes in the bird and absorbs and shares flavours with said bird. Win win. Dressing? sounds like it should go on or around the bird but that is just weird.

    1. I think the dressing is the sauces and or gravies that get served with the bird. I'm happy to be corrected if I am wrong.

    2. Dressing is just stuffing that isn't cooked inside the bird - it's baked separately. Our family often has both, possibly stuffing in the bird and then a vegetarian dressing for the folks who don't eat meat.

  6. I don't think you have to apologize for asking a reasonable question, nor was it your fault that the pharmacist was working alone and it got busy.

I forgot that the US still hasn't had their Thanksgiving. I'm sure your turkeys will be tasty. And a good, long sleep in a warm bed, with a cat purring beside you is nice. Our cat has started sleeping with me and I've found I quite like it. Except last night or this morning when she kept trying to bite me. What the hell cat.

    1. Oh, cats! For goodness sake! Your cat may have been trying to wake you up to get you to pet her. Jack taps me with his paw when he wants more attention but he generally does not try to interrupt my sleep. Ironically, I sometimes wake him up if I can't sleep. Petting him soothes me. He always lets me do that.

  7. I've had all the Covid and booser shots. The last booster I had with the flu shot, which was the stronger version for us old coots. I had no problems with any of them. The last one I didn't even have a sore arm. The only thing that kept me in bed was the 2nd shingles shot. I felt like shit the next day.
I love pinto beans, too. Comfort food with cornbread. I think I was a southern gentleman farmer in a precious life....or locked up in a psych unit? Coin toss, I guess.

Pinto beans and cornbread are the food of the goods. Without a doubt.

  8. Got both my high octane flu shot and the covid booster on the same day ... the covid arm was tender for a couple days and that was that!
I love Jack in that green chair!
Can you get Anasazi beans in Florida? They are so good and don't take forever to cook ... great for ham and beans!

  9. I love that chair. A favorite color. And cat included. Our Thanksgiving is son and me, still surprising how much planning and cooking it involves. None of it tricky, just a lot of things.

  10. You chose the perfect cushion for that chair, will it be Jack's only or will he share it with you?

  12. Can you share the recipe for cranberry/orange/pecan relish? I am bringing something to a friend's Tgiving--I've never had it with pecans, and that sounds great.
I'm in MN--pecans don't grow well here, I guess even with climate change (though we do have opossums now, which never lived this far north before.)
I like hearing about your Florida foods--
I've never had (or even heard of) a shrimp po'boy! But pinto beans, oh yeah.

    1. So. Eleven years ago I did indeed give the recipe for the cranberry relish. And I always forget it has apples in it but it does. You can find that post at https://www.blessourhearts.net/2011/11/thanksgiving-almost-miracles-and-recipe.html
Let me know if you can't get there from here and I'll repost it.
Sad that you've never had a shrimp po'boy but at least you know the joy of pinto beans.

    2. Thanks (FRESCA here, not anon.) I copied the recipe—looks great!
I hope you feel better soon. I was wiped out for 24 hours after my flu/Covid booster

  13. I had the 2 shots on the same day - one in each arm - and no bad reaction at all. A little bit of a sore arm but not bad. Doesn't matter that you have to go back for your second shot - it is great that you are getting it.
We have cranberries from the can that are molded to the shape of the can and we cut in slices! We like them that way. :)

    1. Why does nobody have a reaction to these shots but me? Dammit.
I think a lot of people love the tradition of the can of cranberries slid onto a plate. I hold no judgement on that at all!

  14. I really don't think there is a homier touch than a curled up animal sleeping soundly on the furniture. I always buy the biggest turkey I can find, even if it is just for Tim and I. I love turkey left overs. I also love cranberry sauce, but I'm the only one who does. I am not sure how that happened. It is so easy to make, I don't know why anyone would buy it in a can.

    1. You can do a whole lot with turkey leftovers, can't you? The first meal I ever made for Mr. Moon was turkey flautas with leftover Thanksgiving turkey. They must have been good because he's still around.
I think it's just tradition for a lot of people to buy the canned cranberry sauce. I like to make it because it's so damn pretty. Also tasty.

  15. My grandgirl Robin and I spent the day yesterday at Joanne's too. I bought some fabric for a new summer skirt. Not what we went for but how do you not buy fabric in a fabric store. And yeah had it all done up with christmas stuff. But we had fun looking at everything.

I don't get the flu shot. I life in a small town, have very little engagement with people. We do need to get the latest covid shot though. That I won't take a chance with.

    1. I'm so glad you and Robin got to go to Joann's too! I sure do miss the fabric stores of old that had such vast selections. Not like that now. Seems to me they focus on costumes, quilting, and licensed character fabric.
Around here people are getting sicker from flu than they are from covid. It's a nasty one this year, I hear.

  16. I didn't realise that Mr Moon smoked. Furthermore, most non-smokers consider smoking to be a despicable habit. I guess that "turkey" is a Floridian slang word for an extra large joint?

    1. You are just a stitch, Mr. P.!
The Florida word for an extra-large joint would be the same as it is just about everywhere, I believe which is not turkey, but a fatty. Put that in your pipe and ponder it, my friend.

  17. Jack is definitely happy with the chair! Funny about the advice to not get the shots together -- I guess people who usually react to vaccines might have a double-strength reaction? I am so glad we're not cooking
for Thanksgiving. I just couldn't deal with that.
