This Boy Is One Week Old Today

Ah. How can that be?

I told Lily after Owen was born that in a perfect world, the mother would give birth at HER mother's house and then the new grandmother would take care of the new little family. You know, feeding them, doing laundry, bringing them beverages, and oh yes, maybe holding the baby once in a while.

Well. That is not the way it is so I have to schlep all the way to town to see this little guy. I remember when Mr. Moon and I were talking about retiring in Costa Rica. Haha! Suddenly Lloyd is too far away.

Maybe the novelty will wear off soon. Do you think?

It's a beautiful morning here in Lloyd and the crows are busy doing whatever crows do and talking about it and my roosters are crowing. Why do crows caw while roosters crow? I tried to get Mr. Moon to take the two extra roosters to Dog Island to set them free. I love the idea of two feral roosters on the island, the bewilderment of people when they sighted them, scratching in the deer moss beside the road, roosting in a pine tree at night.
Probably not a great idea. I'm sure an eagle would get them but before that happened, they'd have plenty of tasty bugs to eat. A short life, but a sweet one.

And now I need to attend to my own sweet life. I am feeling somewhat better today and might even make it to the flea market to buy produce after I go kiss Owen and I need to go to the store. Lily wants chicken flautas for her belated birthday celebration tomorrow. I will be so happy to have all the children here at once and Owen, the King Of It All, to pass around and love on.

Again I have to ask- how can this be? A week ago right now, Lily had been in labor for forever and was discouraged, to say the least, and we were all so tired and the idea of a baby, a real live baby was nothing but a hypothetical dream and yet, here he is now, in all his baby glory, the labor done, the sweet work of raising him begun.

Lily and Jason have gone forth and multiplied and I can't even begin to do the math on how much more love that equals. But I'll see it in real life tomorrow, all of us together, all of us shining in that reflected glory. All of us riding this pink cloud of Owen and smiling and saying, "Please pass the baby....Uh, I mean the guacamole."

Let us hope that no one eats Owen by mistake.

  1. So glad the darkness is starting to lift for you. Remember to try not to do too much too soon. And as for the guacamole? Aaaaah, who cares, pass the baby! One week old, such a perfect baby for such a wonderful grandmama x

  3. Xbox got into your head with that idea, did he? I always have thoughts like that. Especially the time I put one of my kids to sleep in a washing basket full of clothes. I was so worried someone would accidentally toss her in the washing machine. Silly, I know.

    Enjoy the family!

  4. Pearl will make sure that doesn't happen... We have to peek at that boy, so call when it's a good time... we'll just pop in and out real quick. I promise! We're dying to see him and to give Lily a hug.

  6. Wow! He looks so wise. Definitely not like he's been out of the womb for only a week. I can't wait to see him again and kiss his cheeks, or maybe nibble just a bite, I mean bit.

  7. Those eyes! Wow!

No, the novelty doesn't wear off because they keep doing such neat things all the time! (I know that was a rhetorical question, but as my son says, I answer them and expect answers to them!) Grandchildren kept me from moving out of state like I thought I would. What wonderful little magnets they are!

  8. Ms. Lilac- I needed that reminder to not try and do TOO much. Funny how when the fog lifts, the body feels stronger, isn't it?

Ms. Jo- He is nomolicious. Thanks for the Chickens In The Mist. My neighbor actually gave me that cartoon! It's great.

Mwa- Well, he did but also, we talk about eating babies all the time around here. And I know how those crazy thoughts come. I dreamed all last night that I was holding Owen and dropping him. I kept thinking, "Damn. I am breaking Lily's baby!"
    Scary.

Ms. Fleur- We are gathering around fourish. Please come!

Daddy X- The ears are the tenderest, the cheeks the softest, the toes the most easily accessible.

Jon- Not long to wait for yours!

HoneyLuna- You were so smart to hand him to me right before he barfed baby-style. I sort of loved it that he spit up on me, though.

Joy- Wait. You mean I'm going to feel like this FOREVER?! Oh. The agony.

  10. I love to chew their little fingers; when mine were babies they used to put their fingers in my mouth and laughed as I suspected they were tickled, and when they were sick I used to hold them and the first thing they would do was to put their fingers in my mouth. Who knows what memories of tender mercies mothers give to their children that persist when they need comfort long after we stop doing whatever it was that tickled or comforted them before.

Owen looks much older than a week, so tall, his eyes are beautiful and your grandbaby is very, very munchable. Give him a kiss from me, I wish I could do it myself. Grandbaby fever coming on here, can you tell?

  11. Ms. Lucy- No. That'll be next week.

Ms. Allegra- He has his granddaddy's long legs and big feet and that's no joke.
I, too, remember my babies sticking their fingers in my mouth, especially when they nursed. I can still FEEL the way those tiny, searching fingers felt, worming their way between my lips. They would look up at me with their big eyes and I would hold their bodies close to me. I am so grateful for all of those moments and I am so grateful that Lily will get them now too.

  15. Nothin' better than nibblin' on little baby toes. He is goodness squared. Or to the tenth power.

  16. That is THE OLDEST LOOKING 1 week old child I have EVER seen in my life. And I have seen PLENTY. Wow. He is going to be a wise boy, I can tell. He has a lot to teach us.

I know these things, Ms. Moon. You know that I do.

  17. Ginger- He wasn't even a week old then. Like three days or something.

Tiff- Infinity times infinity. For us, anyway.

Aunt Becky- You should have seen his mama. She was born three months old. Round, peachy, gorgous.
