At Least My Husband Is Home

The man is back! However, he didn't get back until this afternoon around two. I got a text from him last night that said he was still in Las Vegas- they were short a flight attendant- and he'd be spending the night in Dallas.
Which is what he did.
So instead of being woken up in the middle of the night, I drove to the airport today and surprised him. I went back and forth on the issue quite a bit. His car was at the Credit Union so I'd only be taking him from the airport to there but then again- there was that element of surprise.
So I did it.
And then we had lunch. So that was nice.

It feels good to have him back home. He's sitting in his chair right now with his phone and computer, taking care of business. What sort of business, I do not know. Fishing business? Hunting business? Car restoration business?
Doesn't matter. He's here.

After lunch I stopped in at the Costco for about two things and ended up buying far more than that. I was on a tear, deciding that I'd just go ahead and get the Costco sizes of everything from toilet paper to paper towels to dishwasher pods to cat food to dental floss.
The dental floss especially thrills me. For ten bucks I may have enough dental floss to last me for the rest of my life. Wouldn't that be great?
I sure hope that Jack and Maurice like the Kirkland brand cat food because I've got twenty-five pounds of it. They probably will. They know the agreement around here- I buy them food and they eat it.
Done.

I just talked to a friend who knows several people who have covid right now and also several people who have died from it in the last weeks. This is scary. Of course I'm still masking and I've just received information that the Jefferson County health department is offering the third moderna shot, the booster, via appointment made by phone. You have to be eight months away from the last one you got and we won't reach that milestone until October but I guarantee that as soon as we qualify, we'll be baring our arms.
(There's a constitutional pun there somewhere.)

Speaking of the constitution- what Texas has done is abhorrent. And I am sure that we are all aware of the deep hypocrisy and irony of a state who refuses to mandate masks because of personal freedoms to make choices about one's own health concerns and yet deems it necessary to disallow abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. At "six weeks gestation", a woman has only, in reality and actuality, been pregnant for four weeks- the amount of time it would take to miss a period. And not only that, but this, from the Huffington Post:

Any private citizen — even if they don’t live in the state — can sue anyone they suspect of “aiding or abetting” abortion care in Texas and be rewarded with at least $10,000 if they win, with all their legal fees paid for by the other side. The law allows for doctors and nurses to be sued, as well as any friend or family member who drives a patient to a clinic.

You want to talk about Sharia Law? How about personal freedom? How about...okay. You know. We all know.
And what's the Supreme Court doing about this?
Absolutely nothing.

There is, however, this:

President Joe Biden blasted the Texas state legislature for “blatantly” violating the constitutional right established under Roe v. Wade.

Not that he can write laws. I just can't even begin to describe my distress and anger over this. And as surely as banning mask mandates costs lives, banning safe, medical abortions does too.

Although I know that there are many women on the right-to-life side of the argument, it is nothing but plain and simple patriarchy that makes anyone feel that a woman should not be able to make what is very often the most important decision of her life. Her life. Her body. This does not bode well for any of us. You want to talk about slippery slopes? Bring it on.

Yours in fury...Ms. Moon

  1. Texas appears to hate women. Are they going to help raise these babies and make sure they get health care and a good education? Of course not. Fucking assholes!

    1. Of course they're not. Will they make sure that every woman gets proper prenatal care and the nutrition she needs while she's pregnant and nursing? They won't do a damn thing. They just want to force women to carry babies to term no matter what. There aren't even exceptions for rape and incest.

    1. Consider the makeup of the Supreme Court. What Texas and other Red states are doing is a continuation of the philosophy of the last president’s administration and the general trend of the Republican Party as a whole. There is a deep fear of “the other,” whether that otherness be gender, ethnicity, nationality, religion, you name it. They feel threatened and they lash out. I am not a Texan, although I have lived in Texas for decades, and have seen a fairly conservative state become a radically conservative state. But there are more and more voters who are horrified and are working to change things, and so the Republican majority legislature has just passed its repressive voting law - gotta keep those uppity others down.

    2. I'm scared, ladies. I am scared. The Supreme Court is finally what the rightest right-wing Republicans have been plotting and planning for all these years. We are so screwed.

  3. The supreme court did something huge and evil. It deliberately refrained from restraining the law from taking effect. That's not nothing! It's orchestrated destruction of women's rights. SCOTUS is now a bunch of thugs.

  5. Presumably Texas will be reverting to " back street" abortions, where women frequently die from complications and infections! As was the case here in England not so long ago. Not exactly a step forward for a 1st world country.

    1. You're so right, Frances. This is a shameful thing. A huge step back for women's rights.

  6. Happy homecoming to Mr. Moon. I'm disgusted...

  7. Of course I'm completely with you on the abortion thing. It's appalling all around, especially deputizing citizens to turn in their own neighbors and family members -- creating abortion vigilantes, basically. All I can do is keep donating to Planned Parenthood and trying to elect the right people, I suppose. (I noticed that John Roberts joined the liberal opposition -- you know we've entered a peculiarly extreme world when John Roberts is a liberal!)

    Glad Mr. Moon is home!

    1. John Roberts is not liberal. He knew how it would go, so the slimy creature used the vote as cover, to look better. He didn't like the optics of a 6-3 vote. Don't be fooled.

    2. I think that Boud is probably right. The optics would look really bad. Good for you for donating to Planned Parenthood!
And yes- the fact that people can get a bounty for reporting people who aid women to get an abortion is simply unbelievable.

  8. At six weeks pregnant most women don't even know they're pregnant! Good lord, that's tantamount to a total ban! On another note, I'm glad Mr. Moon made it home safe and sound!

  9. Exactly. You can not even have a clue you're pregnant at six weeks. So yes- this is one tiny micrometer away from a total ban.

  10. This is all irony: I got married at four weeks. Did I know? Hell no; it was just when I was getting married. When I was divorced, I still lived in a patriarchal state who could ask a woman as part of granting a divorce, Did you know you were pregnant when you got married? And I said No. But they could count eight months from marriage to first child, and boldly asked the question again. Again I said no. So the court asked the question again. And I said If I was, I did not know. Wrong answer, so they asked again. And so we went on, several more times. Finally the attorney for the state told the stenographer they were skipping that question for the time being. He never came back to it.
Our daughters may come to find out all we went through to secure Rv.Wade.

  11. It's a ridiculous law and unenforceable. you can report a suspected abortion but the state cannot do anything about it because there is no enforcement written into the law. they are counting on individuals and groups filing civil actions in which they have to prove an abortion took place after 6 weeks and if successful they will get a $10,000 reward. they can file against not just the woman and the doctor but anyone who helps her get to the clinic, even an uber driver. the state is counting on the crazies filing frivolous lawsuits so in essence it's enforcement by harassment. the state thinks women will not get help or will not seek an abortion for fear of a civil lawsuit being filed. so stupid. because how is any neighbor or individual or group going to know which any specific woman had an abortion after six weeks unless she tells someone? unless they plan on suing everyone who walks into a PP or other women's health clinic. I would think HIPPA would not allow them access to medical records on a suspicion.

glad Mr. Moon is back and home safely. I read that the Moderna was holding better than the Pfizer but I guess when October/November rolls around we'll get a booster too.

  12. Glad your Hubby made it Home safely. I'm not surprised by the Texas decision, they have a lot of Texas Taliban and Vanilla Isis in those parts.
