I Do Not Know Shit

Now I know that Linda Sue's yard is a virtual mommy/baby playground and nursery for all the deer in her Washington neighborhood, but I have never seen a deer in this yard despite the fact that they are everywhere around here. Lily had so many deer in her former yard that the dogs quit barking at them but this morning I looked up from my seat on the back porch to see that little doe nibbling away at some weeds on the fence line. I have no idea why but she just made my heart happy with her presence. Every now and then she'd startle and look up, and then return to her nibbling. Finally I went and got Mr. Moon to come and see her and she didn't leave but a few minutes later, she sensed us looking at her and faded back into the woods.

It was a nice beginning to a day.

I have been missing my chickens so much. Not sure why but I am. And then the other day I saw a short video of a rooster tidbitting for his hens and I could hardly stand it. Tidbitting is a behavior of roosters wherein when they find something really good to eat they make sounds that the hens know means that he has something for them. He lays the treat on the ground and lets them eat it and sometimes they even take it from his mouth. Of course it's all based on the fact that he wants their love (and when I say love I mean sex) but it's beautiful to watch. They know they have to earn that love. Roosters are so protective of their hens and keep watch over them all day long. They have specific warning vocalizations for different threats and the whole flock understands them.

The best rooster we ever had, Elvis, watching over some of his ladies.

When Elvis and Owen were both young. They were curious about each other, as you can see and they were friends.

Oh. I could go on for days about the amazing ways of chickens.
I'll just say that yard chickens have been one of the great joys of my life.

So. Here we are. Biden did indeed step aside.
I don't know what to say or even what to think. I do know that when I watched the debate I was shocked and horrified at the changes I saw in Biden. This does not mean I would not have supported him. He has done good things in his term as president and he has my undying respect. Of course, he's done some not-so-great things too, as have all presidents, but overall, I think he's been a good leader and he certainly has the requisite experience and knowledge of how things are done in Washington.
But. That is over and done with as of today and as I'm sure all of you know, he has endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate.
I think she'd make an excellent president and I hope with all my heart she gets the chance to prove that.
But you know what? I have no idea if that will happen or not. Things have not been normal or right or predictable since Trump threw his slimy red made-in-China ball-cap in the ring in 2015.
So basically, right now, I do not want to talk about it or think about it either. As I said, I really can't.
I keep coming back to the unwelcome and horrifying idea that this country has a huge population of racist, homophobic, cult-loving idiots.

And so, at this point in time, I'm going to keep looking up. Not in the "Oh let's be cheerful!" sense but in the actual sense. Look up and notice the Spanish moss, the resurrection fern that is so happily unfurled and green on the branches of the oak tree because of the rain we've gotten in the last few days.

I can't do a damn thing to control the outcome of this election except to vote and that I will do.

I guess that's it for today.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Voting is the one right we DO have and we do need to use it! I look forward to a Madame President!

  2. I honestly don't see myself ever voting for a republican in my lifetime. This project 2025 stuff is pretty awful.

    1. Well, we've been saying for a long time that we need a woman president. May this be her.

  5. Pretty sure your man was thinking"dinner" looking at the visitor. This morning Erik awoke to two fawns and a raccoon playing in the yard by the bed room window, and if that is not a great way to wake up, well, I just do not know.
Chickens are lovely people and you should figure aout a really fool proof way to keep them- You are a great chicken mother. My friends who have chooks have the same love and enthusiasm for them.
I was out wqtering the dirt , Erik yelled from the porch- "Biden's done!" so the day has been defibrillated, heart can get behind Kamala, fingers crossed.
    We know nothing.

    1. Believe it or not, Glen can appreciate the sight of a little doe just for the beauty of her. Of course he's probably hoping she grows up...
Wait! Were the fawns playing with the raccoon?
Anyone with a heart who has chickens has to come to love them.
You are right. We know nothing.

  6. It is very sad that aging and health have hit JB very hard. He is very accomplished and holds strong track record. History will see him as a hero.
KH is a very capable woman and being second in command prepares her for being our next President. Also, I've seen her debate and DT will get away with nothing on the debate stage with KH. KH is 10X smarter than DT.

    1. I don't know. I keep hearing people talk about how Biden has put country before self but has he? He fought this stepping down. Fought it hard. And now here we are, changing horses in midstream.
      Chaos ensues.
And I hate being a Debby Downer but it doesn't matter how smart Kamala is or how much more prepared she is for the debate. Trump's just going to lie and lie and lie and brag and brag and brag and how do you fight that? God, I hope she can.

  7. 37paddington—I was happy Biden endorsed Harris. I will vote blue regardless of whose name is on the ticket but I am starting to relish the matchup between the prosecutor and the felon. Bring it on.

  8. love the doe in your yard...we have had one come in evenings to nibble on our apricot tree and since it has NO fruit this year, she is welcome to do so. I recall that photo of dear Elvis with Owen....have I really been reading *you* all this time? And sigh.....Joe.....the state of things......I cannot even digest it tonight.....but I believe it was probably the correct move for Joe. He would have had my vote, but I do not feel it would be in his best interest to continue...if for his own health only......not withstanding *ours*

    1. Yep. Owen was such a little guy then. And Elvis wasn't full-grown either but already beautiful.
I think Joe made the right decision. I hope it works out well for the country.

  9. I so wish for a way for you to get chickens again. Mine are happy as heck in their 12x 6 yard (and let out supervised to clean the garden at the end of the season) with lots of buried hardwear cloth and extra reinforced/hopefully raccoon proof coop.

    1. The problem for me is that a good part of the wonder and magic of having chickens was the way they pecked and talked and moved around the perimeter of the house all day where I could see them, where we could keep track of each other. If I kept them in the coop, they would be so far away.

  10. I admire Joe Biden so much for sacrificing personal ambition for the good of the party and the country. History will remember him kindly.

One comment I just read on a news site is worth sharing because it made me smile on a day that's been very emotional. They said that Joe was really savvy to wait this long to decide because the Republicans wasted their whole convention attacking a candidate who's no longer on the ballot! Ha! I hope it was a calculated move because if so it was genius!

    1. I really don't think Biden had much of a choice at this point. And what sort of personal ambition could he really have? He's racked up historical moments and actions like crazy and should be content with that and proud too.
I seriously doubt that it was a calculated move for Biden to step down after the Rep convention. But however it happened, it did throw a wrench their works.

  12. I'm not politically savvy, but I trust Barack Obama. He picked Joe Biden and he told him it was time to go. Why Obama has not endorsed Kamala I don't know but I think she should have a chance. I am more afraid than I was in 2016. We know more. About the whole clan. I will vote and hope.

    1. I am so with you on Barack. He'll endorse Kamala if the party chooses her.
I completely agree with you about being even more afraid now than in 2016. We knew it was going to be bad but I doubt many of us thought it would be that bad.

    2. We know now that it would be worse because the people around him will be infinitely worse than the first go-round. And Vance is more frightening than Trump because he’s smart; I do not want him a heartbeat away from the presidency if a doddering old man. Margaret

  13. I am not a fan of deer. They carry ticks. Our town is overrun. A friend who moved to a condo in town says she has more deer now than when she lived in the country. We have cameras and they cut through our driveway between the house and garage every night. And this is where my youngest grandsons ride their little plastic cars. I don't want them to get ticks. The only good thing about deer - well, two things, they don't like tomatoes (which are right there) and they haven't damaged my car.

  15. Add the strapline "Endorsed by Mary Moon" to "VOTE FOR KAMALA HARRIS" and I am sure she will win many more votes. She's everything that Trump and his angry mob scorn in a leader: kindly, intelligent, articulate, non-white and a woman.

  19. I echo Yorkshire above: Kamala is everything the MAGA hate. (I should know: my relatives, whom we do not associate with, are rabid Trump supporters. Part of Trump's appeal is that he hates people of color as much as they do.) I will never fail to be amazed at how much attention was brought to one debate, and not everything else Biden was/has done. I think so much of this ouster was media/donor driven. Biden is a good man; deserved better. He also knew to do the right thing. I have high hopes for Kamala. Have a been big fan since her days in CA. We must now all work to get her elected, especially those who bitched the loudest, I think, about Joe stepping down.

    1. I think that if Joe had really been thinking about the country, he would have stepped down earlier. I don't think he's a power-hungry narcissist at all but I do think he was very attached to being a two-term president. He has been a good president and I admire and respect that but I think that his best days are behind him.

  21. I think Biden did the right thing. I was shocked when I saw his decline in the debate, but he's putting his country first, not his ego, and stepping down.

  23. I read Kamala's bio on the White House website and she has really accomplished a lot as VP which doesn't get much notice. She also has such a strong background in public service. Those "racist, homophobic, cult-loving idiots" wouldn't have voted for a Democrat anyway, but now undecideds and young people may take another look and get involved.
