Holding On

I stopped and took that picture of the lilies growing in front of yet another old and abandoned house on Main Street. They just seemed to be asking me to pause and notice them for a second and so I did. The old house behind it has been empty since I moved here twenty years ago but it still looks salvageable to me. It's got straight lines; what we might call good bones. I think the person who owns it bought some property here a long time ago, thinking that Lloyd would be discovered due to the interstate exit and entrance so close and hoping to make a fortune selling land to Hardee's or someone. He may well be the person who sold the land that the GDDG is on.

Ai, yi, yi. What a day. I took the full walk this morning. I'd even gotten up early to get out earlier but when I was ready to go, Mr. Moon needed my phone to try and contact the Dollar Rent-A-Car office in Las Vegas because they'd never called back like they said they would nor did they email like they said they would. Of course there is no way in this world to get an actual phone number to speak to an actual person in an actual office. I think the man's ready to- well, I don't even know. But he is NOT happy. Of course he's filled out all the online forms but that doesn't seem to do a damn thing except to tell him that if his lost item is not claimed in thirty days, they will donate it to the poor or something, and by the way, they have thirty days to respond to a claim.
Are you fucking kidding me?
No. No I am not.
We figure the phone's in a desk drawer somewhere, forgotten and forlorn.
So the point of this story is that I got out later than I thought I would and it was so hot and the humidity is over 70% but I was stubborn this morning and got in two and a half miles, came home and melted in front of a fan.
This is ridiculous and I'm not sure why I've suddenly decided that walks will be taken but it may be that I'm a whisper away from turning 70 and it's sort of like now or never.
At this point, "never" is sounding far more reasonable.
I keep thinking of my little old granny and her friends whom I knew when they were in their sixties and seventies and they did not do a damn thing when it came to exercise. They may have worked a tiny bit in the yard but I sure don't remember that. And I can't remember them being any the worse for it. What if we're just wearing ourselves out with all of this physical fitness nonsense? What if we're just creating business for the orthopedic surgeons who replace hips, knees, and shoulders?
Okay. Okay. I'll quit trying to rationalize a slothful life.

It was a Candie day so I took the trash and hung some things up in the closet and really, that's about all I did before she got here. Then I went to town to visit the Costco and the Publix. For some unknown reason this always takes me at least three hours, sometimes more. I'm going to collect Ms. Magnolia June tomorrow in the early afternoon and she'll be spending the night and I wanted to get a few things to make her feel special, like little tea cakes, and ginger ale and grape juice for her fancy drink. I also got this at Costco along with two packs of colored markers.

She may not be interested in it in the least but I am going to give her options. She can claim it as her own if she likes it, she can just mess with it when she's here, or she can totally say, "Ummm. I don't think that's me," and I'll be fine with any of those. It might be a little advanced for her. Or a lot. But who knows? She may surprise me and want to do some of the activities.

I will let her guide me as to things that we do. I wonder if she'll want fish for supper or perhaps, chicken and dumplings, which I think was the last thing she asked for. We shall see. I'm ready for almost anything.
I think.

I'm tired. Nothing a good night's sleep won't cure. I'm hot and sticky. Nothing a shower won't deal with. I'm numb with the news of the horrible shit going on in our country, especially as it relates to the Republican National Convention and JD Vance. And nothing, nothing is going to deal with any of that. At least nothing I can do.

Here. In case you have no idea who this Vance person is, I give you Trae Crowder, The Liberal Redneck. Watch the whole thing if you can. He knows the guy. Has known him for years.

Let's all try to be gentle and kind with ourselves, okay? It's weird times and we're all stressed out but if we aren't okay, we can't be gentle and kind to others which is what the world really does need now.

The picture I wanted to take last night.
Light and love, baby. Light and love.

  1. We just watched that clip from Trey Crowder a few minutes ago! I thought about sharing it too. I just love that guy. We subscribe to his YouTube channel so we always see anything new he puts out immediately.

So sorry about Mr. Moon's phone. I have a feeling he may be getting a new one soon, but maybe he'll get lucky and get the old one back. I wouldn't count on it though, with how things have gone so far.

I'll bet you're looking forward to having Ms. Maggie over tomorrow night! You're going to have fun.

    1. Oops...It's Trae not Trey. I have a friend named Trey (another liberal redneck although not famous!) and that spelling sticks in my head.

  2. I read Hillbilly Elegy, or at least part of it, before giving up because I thought Vance was a big old phony and I didn’t get the love. Since then, he’s certainly shown his true colors and so, short of MTG, was my most feared VP pic-and he’s worse because he’s smart. I can’t watch the news without wanting to hide under my desk a là air raid drills in the Fifties, although even then I was cynical enough to know that wasn’t going to do any good. Margaret

  3. There is another YouTuber you might like to listen to ... Tennessee Brando ... He has absolutely no use for Vance or Thing 45!
I hate to think Glen may have to figure out a new phone!

Give my love and adoration to our Maggie! Have a great sleep over!

  6. Well, I've already expressed my opinion of JDPantsOnFire. Got that out of my craw, as my grandma used to say.
Here's what happens when you exercise. Yes, muscles and bones you haven't heard from in years start calling you up a lot. That's good. Those muscles will remember how to keep you in balance in the coming years. Those bones won't break if you do manage to fall. All because you are exercising. So ignore the complainers and the complaints. Advice from someone who knows.

  7. Lack of integrity is the common denominator between JDV and DT. I choose to believe that the majority of people are not buying their BS. We can only hope. I am not so confident about the phone being returned, you are being given the royal run-around.

  8. Thanks for that video. I just love Trae and am glad to know his feelings about JD Vance. Maybe enough voters will be unwilling to vote for him and help bring the ticket down. These are such worrying times. I read Hillbilly Elegy and it wasn't a good experience.

  9. I liked Hillbilly Elegy because it made me understand generational trauma better. And then I read up about JD Vance and it didn't feel good.
And Trae, I love him, but ya gotta say it with a southern accent:)

  10. That picture with the shades and the lace, is just lovely. I like how you make sure there are interesting things for Maggie's visits. No wonder she likes to come. She knows how warm and welcoming your house is for her. Lucky girl.

  11. I think I would act like that phone is stolen (cause I think it is), and get a new one. At least he can text on the computer or Ipad but those tiny pocket computers that we carry around are essential. I feel naked without mine. I did leave it in Trader Joes once and when I asked Alexa to "find my phone" Traders answered my phone.

  13. There was a clip of JD Vance on the BBC news in the UK last night which highlighted his casual racism (it was an anti-Muslim slur). I could not believe that this guy had been chosen as the running mate, no wonder the world is in the mess it’s in. Like you Ms Moon I tend my garden, grow my own veg and fruit and stay local. I have an acre plot plus another acre of wild wood so plenty to keep me busy when it isn’t raining although we’re heading for temperatures in the high 20s this week. Sending Love and Light your way too. Sarah in Sussex (60 miles south of London, 10 miles from the south coast).

  14. That's a beautiful photo of the leaf and lace. Does the book have any age recommendation on it? I think Maggie will like it. I hope Mr Moon gets his phone soon.
I worry about the JD Vance character, my newspaper says he has also been known as James Donald Bowman and James David Hamel, so just who the heck is this James David Vance and why does he have aliases?
    Trae Crowder has nice eyes.

  15. Lack of service (or indifference) drives me mad too. A few years ago I was at a London airport and tried to withdraw £200 from a cash point. The machine spit out a ticket to say "here you go" but no money came out. There was a man behind me and he was willing to vouch for me, but as the HSBC counter was right next to the HSBC cash machine I went over and explained the problem to the two bored young women sitting at the desk. One kinda went "oh yeah, that happens" and was ready to call it a day. So I asked her for a form to fill out as I was right bloody there!!!! If I hadn't asked I doubt she would have volunteered it! I got it sorted within a couple of days but not before contacting HSBC online to explain the situation! Hope Mr. Moon gets his phone back soon!

  16. Could Mr Moon's sister pick up his phone and send it home?

  17. I hope that Maggie likes the book..it looks interesting!
I have got a sleepover happening tonight....a friend's dog is coming for 10 days! He has only been here for a couple of hours in the daytime so I am a bit jittery about it.....just hope he sleeps through the night and all will be well!

  18. Beautiful flowers, yes, they needed their monment of fame.
Maybe our grannies and their crew did not work out, but yes they did. Most shopping was done by foot, washing carried out and hung on the line, breads kneaded, meat ground in the hand grinder, mixing, chopping, hauling, lifting, bending ... they worked out during a normal day's work and we would not last a day of their life.
I would call and call and call hubby's phone to have it ringing and ringing inside that drawer, so that they want to send it back home ;)

  19. I watched all of the Trae Crowder video. Regarding James Vance, I am disgusted that he referred to Great Britain as an Islamist state and thought that was funny. He should have considered the statistics. Besides, what is his problem with Islam? It is estimated that by 2050 there will be over eight million people living in the USA who identify as Muslims.

  20. Politics is making me anxious right now and I can't wait until November as I am sick of it all. The Media makes it worse. We know what must be done to save our country (vote Blue) and I hope it comes true so let's get on with it.
Enjoy your sleepover with Ms. Maggie and keep on walking, Mary! xxoo

  21. I love that you got your leaf picture after all.

I've had similar thoughts about Olga and her dog-walker. Is it really beneficial to keep pushing her to go on a walk every day? Would it really hurt to just let her lie around the house?

I am minimizing my news intake these days. I know the issues; I know who I'm voting for. Everything else is just noise in my head.

  23. I've been awol so I assume Mr Moon left his phone in the rental car. bummer. I don't know if keeping physically fit extends our life but I'd much rather be able to do things to the end thn have to sit around because I can't.

I've been avoiding the news as much as possible, it's just too horrible. J. D. Vance, another totally unqualified asshole only been in public service for 18 months! and if Trump gets elected and dies in office this prick will be president. he's another one of those people who saw Trump as the danger he is and then totally converted. this guy is the epitome of project 2025.

  24. I was in Butler PA today, and they have an electronic billboard that flashes 'more MAGA than ever!' in big bold letters. It switches to a picture of Trump walking alone and persecuted with a hangdog posture and it says, "Remember they are not after him, they are after us." A picture of Jesus looking fondly at DJT and it says, "Jesus be with him". There were about a half dozen more gems, but we were at a light, and I watched it repeating its message over and over and I could not say what I thought..."this is really fucked up..." because I was in a van full of Amish.

  25. I just now read about the lost phone and how often we use one for almost anything. Case in point, I had to Google 'age of Aquarius' and learned that we actually are in it since January of this year up until 2044. No idea how all that works but there you have it, now we know!
