I went to the post office this morning as I was expecting to get some seeds in the mail. These seeds were being sent by blog friend and very sweet lady, Jennifer, who blogs at Sparrow Tree Journal. We both like to garden and she is very into heirloom seeds and so kindly offered to send me some of her favorites. They DID arrive today and I got so excited that I drove to town in the RAIN (well, drizzle) to a nursery to get what I needed to start seedlings.
Before I did that, I stopped by the Gypsy Soul place with an item in mind to actually buy. I wanted to get some lavender oil. Now one would think that a store that reeks of incense and homemade soap would have essential oils, right? But one would be wrong. They DID have "Full Moon Infused Water" in tiny bottles for five dollars, labeled with the different moons the water had been collected in.
Meaning what, I wonder? Did someone turn a tap on when the moon was full? And what is one supposed to do with Full Moon Infused Water?
But there was no lavender oil. Or any essential oils for that matter.
Sigh.
Mr. Moon went to a basketball game in the early afternoon and met the Weatherfords there. FSU was playing Duke, where Vergil attended college for his undergraduate work. So I knew they were going to have a good time and I think they did. Glen said that August ate 3/4's of a huge container of popcorn. I am not surprised. And I went to a nursery. I found the potting cups I wanted and some plastic trays to go underneath them, labels for the various seeds, and starting soil mix. I know I could have found everything around here except the soil mix to substitute for the store bought items but I wanted to get those pretty little tomato seeds in dirt as quickly as possible. After I collected all of my seedling needs inside the nursery, I went outside where the plants are kept and bought myself three small pots with a periwinkle plant in each and two small pots of Thai Basil. There was hardly anyone at the nursery and I had a tiny, very real moment of happiness as I wondered around and looked at plants in the rain.
I did discover something about myself that I did not know while doing this. You know how some people have sensory sensitivities? Well, I've never thought I did, although some substances do not make me especially happy to touch. But in handling those peat pots I realized that touching them, handling them, was almost agonizing for me. I know, I know- makes no sense but there you go.
I put on gloves. Problem solved.
Covid is going to live with us forever. We will become immune and the virus will mutate and on and on. I hope that Lily is not feeling toooo terrible! Maybe her body just wants a break- lay it down, go to sleep...A party today called off because too many family an friends have covid. Ok with me! Parties are not my thing. If the tomatoes do not grow for you I reckon they have covid- you can grow any little ting!
ReplyDeleteThat is a rural myth! I cannot grow any and all things! Only a few. Of course I blame the heat, pests, possible soil fungi, and not enough sun. If not for those problems, I'd definitely be able to grow anything.
DeleteYeah. Covid is hitting hard right now.
You can’t miss this heaven-sent opportunity to make your fortune selling moon infused water! Who better? You could open your taps anytime you felt like it without violating any truth in advertising laws, bottle it up and truck on down to the Gypsy Soul emporium with it.
ReplyDeleteIn case you feel obligated to reward me with a percentage of the profits, I am not so much anonymous as I am Margaret.
DeleteMargaret- the only problem is that those bottles look somewhat aged. As if they've been on that shelf for quite awhile. I'm thinking there may not be a big market for two ounces of Moon Water for five bucks. But perhaps if my bottles were prettier than theirs, I could indeed make my fortune. I'll be sure to share the profits.
DeleteAn all day rain is so much nicer than an all day snow! A gentile rain in sixty degree weather is sublime. Don't get sick, now.
ReplyDeleteAnd it was so nice. Why is it less gloomy if it's raining a little than if it's not?
DeleteMoon infused water? Oh lordy, no! What IS that?
ReplyDeleteand NO lavender oil?? Bad Gypsy Soul! Sorry to hear Lily has *the sick*....ugh. May she feel better soon with Laurens TLC.....and hope the kids don't get it too.....but...they might. Bless Jennifer for her seeds.....and you with your delicate planting thereof....... something to look forward to! Dreary, low energy day here today...raining all day, gray, cold..... no motivation for either of us. Watching movies on Netflix, fire in wood stove all day....BLT's on tap for dinner....and early bed with books!
Susan M
Well, Susan, that sounds like a pretty cozy day to me. The sun will come out and your spirits will rise.
DeleteSorry to hear about the latest sick list entry, and I hope she's well soon.
ReplyDeleteFunny about the peat pots, if you never noticed it before.
I think you're definitely going to have great germination. It's what you do, great gardener!
It's been a long time since I handled peat pots. So...
DeleteThis may be something I've developed in older age.
I'm not nearly as worried about the seed germination as I am about the plant survival. We'll just have to see what happens.
Nothing nicer than home grown tomatoes especially those with an heirloom background. I look forward to seeing those darling seeds sprout and grow under your tender care.
ReplyDeleteCovid is rampant here, also. I wonder if we are more aware because we can test for it.
We probably are more aware due to testing but I am not sure it really existed very much before the world-wide infestation with it.
DeleteI tried heirloom seeds for a few years from a reputable nursery and got very little produce for my troubles. These days in a different home I don't have space for vegetable growing.
ReplyDeleteI can handle peat pots or just about anything else, but Microfibre fabrics are like harsh sandpaper to my hands.
I hope Lily has an easy case and is soon well again.
I've had a few heirlooms do very well. A variety of tomatoes and carrots come to mind. But we'll just have to see.
DeleteI cannot bear the feeling of microfiber cloths. I wonder what it is about them. Margaret
DeleteYou can make your own Full Moon Infused water simply by placing a bowl of water where the full moon will shine into it overnight. Free.
ReplyDeleteSomehow I do not feel the need for moon-infused water. But if I did, I'm sure I could make some!
DeletePoor Lily. I am not a fan of covid, nasty disease.
ReplyDeleteYour photo of the pansies made me sad because I have to wait for 2-3 more months for my annuals. The day was lovely today though, warm and sunny.
Our pansies are on sale because their season is almost over. Isn't that funny?
Delete37paddington—I hope Lily feels better soon. At least she’ll be immunity boosted for a while. Full Moon infused water. It’s the word infused that gets me. All science-y and stuff.
ReplyDeleteExactly! Or like something from a upscale cocktail menu. Fancy AND scientific!
DeleteI am sorry Lily is sick. Lavender isn't that hard to find, good luck with the seeds.
ReplyDeleteHope Lily is all well quickly. What fun with all those seeds. Jennifer is such a kind soul. Funny about those peat pots. I never thought about it, but I find them very unpleasant to handle, too!
ReplyDeleteJennifer is a darling!
DeleteIt was startling to me how much I hated touching those pots. Before I thought to put gloves on (duh) I honestly thought I'd have to abandon the project until I got different pots.
Are you sure we're not related?
I already understand why Shadow Steve told me I would like you so much.
DeleteWe have what I call ;air rain' just enough to frizz my hair and make me feel damp.. sorry about covid, I don't think we'll ever be free of it.
ReplyDelete"Air rain"! Yes! I love that phrase. I'm going to start using it.
DeleteNah. We'll never be done with Covid nor it with us.
Bird frogs? I never knew that birds and frogs could mate. Do they have feathers? And...COVID - the gift that keeps on giving.
ReplyDeleteI have frogs in the back yard that croak so melodically, I honestly thought they were birds. I'm an idiot.
DeleteBut now I call them Bird Frogs. I've never actually seen one that I know of so they might have feathers.
You know all about Covid, don't you? I bet you wish you didn't.
I can't stand the wooden spoons you get with those little ice cream dishes. Wooden popsickle sticks. Don't ask me why. I have no idea, but when I accidently bite one or even scrape it across my teeth, it gives me the ickiest feeling.
ReplyDeleteSame sort of thing, Debby! Yes. I totally get that.
Deleteso far neither Marc or I have had covid. fingers crossed. it was spring fever around here too until yesterday when it never got out of the 40s and just now got out of the 30s today though we'll be back in the 70s in a couple of days. I think all our little tree frogs died last summer.
ReplyDeleteGlen and I are Novids, too.
DeleteOf course our rain is gone and now we're getting your colder temps. I don't have to look at forecasts, I just need to read your blog to see what our weather is going to be.
Maybe your little tree frogs will come peeping back soon.
Sorry to hear about Lily. It DOES seem to be going around!
ReplyDeleteI wonder why those peat pots bothered you. Was it just that their texture was unpleasant, or did you feel actual pain? Maybe something holding the pots together or used in the molding process. Weird!
Moon-infused water is new to me!
It's so hard to explain, Steve. It wasn't actually painful like cutting or burning yourself is painful. But the sensation was beyond unpleasant. I honestly could not bring myself to touch them without gloves on.
DeleteI may have heard of moon infused water before but if I did, I forgot it.
