Shiny AND Brite!

Yesterday when Jessie and I were going through the Christmas things I found this battered little canoe and the Chinese couple who have been riding into the New Year in it for a very long time on all of my Christmas trees. The lady of the couple needed her face glued back on which I did, and I told Jessie, "I'm not ready to give these up."

I am not sure where I got either the canoe or the couple but I think that possibly a boyfriend from long ago gave me the canoe and my first mother-in-law gave me the man and woman. I could be so wrong about that.

Today I was searching around in a closet looking for a charging device and I found it but it's not what I wanted. I also found the packaging for my iPod, the paper work and packaging for many iPhones and AirPods, some lovely little gifty items, and two strings of tiny battery-run lights.

I threw away some of the Apple product packaging and I am going to wrap up the sweet little gift items and give them as Christmas presents, and the lights...well, they inspired me to get my tiny Norfolk Island pine off the front porch where it's been in its pot since last Christmas. Or was it the Christmas before?
Who knows? Not me.
It was one I got at Publix, of course. That I do know.

And then I decorated it.

It is perfect in my opinion.

It is small but it is mighty.

And then, because I was absolutely burbling and bubbling with the Christmas spirit, I decided to put up the little manger I've had since Hank and May were little.

In family tradition, I picked a few magnolia branches to frame it and also, I put Buddha in there too because that is what we do. Many, many years ago, Hank went and got that little Buddha off a mantelpiece and put him behind the Baby Jesus.
Again- perfect.

I always imagine that Buddha with his happy grin is saying to the assembled creatures whether human or four-legged or angelic, "I'm god! You're god! We're all god!"

On my FB memories yesterday I saw that some years ago I had posted a picture of this same arrangement and my now deceased and brilliant and funnier-than-we'll-ever-be friend, B-Boy (aka Brian Everhart), had commented something like, "Mary, I say this in the most respectful and spiritual way- I think that Buddha is back there asking the eternal question- "WHO'S YOUR DADDY?"

So putting out these two things have made me happy which is a little surprising but it's true. And actually, not so surprising. I love Christmas ornaments. I keep many of them up all year long. Forever.

Here we have a entire collection of vintage Shiny Brite ornaments that belonged to Mr. Moon's family. And those star lights over the door? I honestly cannot tell you how many years they have twinkled and changed color there, permanently plugged in.

Oh my goodness! In the box that the manger was stored in, there was a different string of battery-operated lights that I love but the case that the batteries go in was totally broken and messed up so I couldn't use them. But Mr. Moon has made them work with scotch tape and I could not be more delighted.

It's sort of like a rock concert and sort of like Mexico.

Rock on, Buddha, Mary, Joseph, donkey, and cow! (I think that's a cow.)

Felice Navidad, y'all.

Love...Ms. Moon

    1. Without a doubt, Buddha is the happiest creature in that nativity.

  3. wow, love your style of decorating, especially your tree! I have not done one decorating thing. I do have a string of tiny white lights in our dining room window....that are there all year long....but only get turned on in wintertime or Christmas. I may buy a poinsettia to put on the counter if I run across one.....but that is it. Sigh. I miss the *smell* of pine...but alas.....no tree farm that I can glean scrap branches for a swag this year....so no pine smell (which is my favorite). Hubby preparing to depart early tomorrow- short 3 day trip up north to visit a friend and bike for 2 days....and just long enough for us both.......but he's in *frenzy* mode currently......so must go assist and ground him! LOL!

    1. Well, plug in your string of lights and call it a day. Poinsettias are pretty but they are destined to die in most regions and that makes me sad. It is too bad you can't get any pine branches. I think they do make some decent candles that smell piney.
I know that packing situation well. Good luck!

  4. I think the little Buddha fits right in with that crowd! Since you don't have the 3 wise guys, the Buddha will do!!
I have NO holiday spirit coursing through my body at all! Just another day anymore!!!

    1. Yep. No wise guys. They were still trudging along with their frankincense and myrrh, I guess. But Buddha fills in nicely.
No Christmas? No problem. That's what I say.

  10. We went to Jack's Christmas concert/party tonight. The ladies who run the daycare he goes to are Punjabi so the food at the Christmas party is Indian and very tasty. The kids run wild and Santa visits too. It was lovely.

  11. I'm going to add baby Buddha to my nativity in the morning. I think he would like a change of scene. He's hanging out with a carved polar bear for over a year, which must be some boring.

    1. Yeah, Buddha loves a good change of scenery. He can tell stories to that baby in the manger and give himself a break from the polar bear.

  13. I had to laugh when I saw your manger. It brought back memories of when I was a kid. My mom set a manger scene out and I took the baby cheeses out and put a lamb in the manger. I also removed all the human cast of characters and put the camels and other animals around the manger. Bless her heart....she left it that way and it stayed that way every Christmas until I left home for college. We'd often laugh about it over the years. I still feel the same way, although now I'd gladly put a Budha in the manger. The rest of the cast of characters (people) can stay in the basement. LOL! I do like the decorations and leaving those colored lights up year-round is great. Festive! Bring on the martinis.

    1. I love that story! You were like Hank in your own way. You had a sweet mama. Colored lights are one of the joys of life in my opinion. Why relegate them to just a few weeks in December? Let them bring joy all year 'round!
      Bring on the martinis, indeed!

  14. I love all of it! That sweet little norfolk pine is the best. I really like the idea of leaving ornaments up all year too.

    1. And to tell you the truth- a few ornaments were left on the little tree all year. Instead of Christmas decorations, I suppose they were porch decorations.

  15. Well done, ms. Christmas! Buddha does have that afterbirth body , so, yes, feasible that he belongs in the Mary spot. lS

    1. I love that canoe as well. We actually have another one that Glen made in Cub Scouts. I have a feeling that the one in the tree was a similar scout project. They are twins except that the tree canoe is much more battered.

  20. even though I don't love christmas, I do love christmas ornaments. I have my handful of ornaments permanently displayed which I have shown before on my blog. and I have the same star lights. I also have a string of little white lights I picked up at an estate sale that I think I'm going to string on my deck and keep them on but I need an outdoor outlet.

    1. Either an outdoor outlet or a long extension cord.

  23. Christmas ornaments are great for connecting with memories. I experience that when I use ours, and I always did when we decorated the tree at home too. (I think my brother has my mom's old ornaments now.)
