Sad and Mad and Just Plain Confused

I am sick at heart.
I went out to feed my chickens this morning and let them out and there were only Elvis, Miss Dolly, and Daffodil in the coop.
Six hens completely missing.
Miss Betty, Miss Red, Miss Penny, Miss Shalayla, Miss Mable and Miss Bob. All gone.
I have searched the yard and can find no sign of them. No clusters of feathers, no broken bodies. Just...nothing.
In over a year I have lost one chicken to a predator and that was Miss Sukie. I found feathers. A bunch of them. And then a trail of them leading off. I think an owl took her.
But today- nothing. Just no hens.

I was so mad and so sick feeling on my walk this morning. I took a trash bag with me today to pick up some of the crap I've been ignoring on Main Street lately and that made me mad, too. Why do people throw their cups and bottles and cans and bags out of their windows? And why can't people who live on that street pick up that shit? Why do I do it?
Because I hate seeing it. That's why.
I saw Miss Liola on my way and she told me that she was glad to see me picking up trash and that she picks it up in front of her house (and she does- her yard is as tidy as a pin) and down the road a bit. Now see- if we all did that...well.
We don't.
Anyway, I told her about my hens.
"What could have taken them?" I asked.
"A two-legged animal took those chickens," she said. "I know it."

She may be right. See- last night when I shut them up in the hen house, I did not go in to pet them and do a head count. I had my camera over my shoulder to take pictures of the moon and that's where my head was at. I just assumed- as I always do- that my sweet chickens were all on their roost and it was dark in there. I just said, "Sleep well, hens," and shut the door and went and took pictures of the moon so I don't know if they were in there or not. I was on the back porch a great deal of the late afternoon and early evening and heard no disturbances at all.

And now Elvis is walking around the yard, crowing for his ladies. He is confused.
And so am I.
I'm going to go walk around the yard another time and see what I can find.

I feel awful.

  3. Oh, no, Mary, Honey. I'm sorry. I'm so sad. It does sounds like a person took them - six is too many without any noise or mess.

    You should report this.

  9. THANK GOD, those worthless assholes didn't get Elvis. The Moms used to say: You can't have anything nice with kids around. I guess you can't have anything nice with anybody around anymore.

[In the Moms defense, she was right--my brother Steve and I broke antiques and shit all the time. I even put a hole through the seat of her antique rocking chair with my knee. Don't ask.]

I love you and am heartbroken for you.

  10. This is sad and creepy. Six--that's a lot to carry. In a big sack? In a crate? And none of the dogs barked, none of the chickens made a sound? Like a pie spirited off a windowsill. Maybe the two-legged will repent and bring them back. But DTG is right--- future peeps. Perhaps some exotic fancy chicks? I used to leaf through the McMurry catalog pictures of those really Alice-in-Wonderland-looking types, so fantastic....

  11. WTF??? Two-legged animals for sure! Really, shouldn't you report it? It's a crime for sure! I feel so bad for you. I think you definitely should go out and buy some more chicks -- and set up a webcam.

  13. I'm sad and I'm pissed off and I'm worried, just like everyone else. That just sucks so bad. I hope there is a miraculous return and they tell you all about their adventures and how much they missed you.

  15. Oh, so sad! I'm sorry to hear this. (When I was a child I had a pet rabbit - Beethoven - who was an escape artist. Could get out of any cage. But then after a few days of frolic, he'd meet me at the bus stop and hop on home, tired and willing to be caged. I have this fantasy something similar will be the case with your chickens.)

  16. Ms. Moon..Kathleen mentioned something in regards to her chickens with one having been found with her head rung....I would rig something up in the coop for anyone trespassing....this is very disconcerting. I am troubled and very sad....

  18. I am so sad about the hens. I can't imagine someone sneaking in to nab them. Could the have wandered off? I hope that they come back because I know how much they mean to you. And I feel like I know them too.

  20. I hope you get an E-Z Reacher, Ms Moon. It makes it high-tech to pick up trash, and is just easier on the back.
It does my heart good to know there's a trash-whispereuse out there.
