All Right

I did it. I pulled up that story with a main character and a plot and I finished it.
It's called "Into The Light" and I started it...what? Two years ago?
A short story. And I remembered what it was like to let a character take me into her life and let me write down what was happening to her as it happened.

If there is any sort of magic it has to do with the act of creation. And no matter what else is happening in this world of mine, there has been magic today.

For this I am eternally grateful. For this, I feel soulfully soothed.

For this, I am reminded of what is possible.

For this, I am scared the fuck out of my wits.

And right now I hear a Chuck Widow's Will, far off into the distance and I sit here, amazed, delighted, and completely humbled once again.

  1. I hear you. What is possible, in every writerly way, can scare me, too.

I've been ignoring my muse for days and feeling it's ill effects. I need to dance with her and get to finishing an essay and a poem.

Glad you are soulfully soothed with your short story.

PS: I found you via Maggie's Flux blog. She posted a link to your blog in a recent post.

and 'the lord of the rings'. no tongue can tell how the timelessness and depth and majesty of that work tears my soul to shreds and then stiches it right back together again.

  4. Terresa- I know that Maggie cited me which makes me very happy, although I wish the subject which I inspired had been a happier one. It is so nice to meet you. In our family redheads are very, very special. Please come visit again.

Adrienne- I wrote out that quote by hand many years ago and had it with me for a long time. I missed it and looked it up and put it in the header. It says so much I want to believe.

Bethany- Well. I'll tell you how good a story I think it is tomorrow.
    But it does feel good.

Rebecca- That moment of fulfillment certainly was perfection.

  6. So glad you wrote through that story and found your way to an ending. As a writer friend once said to me "We writers don't have clay or marble or wood or paint with which to work our art, we don't have the materials until we get the words down on paper."

Don't judge yourself tomorrow, or even the next day. Let the story sit a bit. Read it to some writer friends. Take any feedback as mere suggestion. Start researching publications to which you might want to submit. Here's a good place to start: http://www.duotrope.com/index.aspx
Or buy a used copy of the "Writer's Market" on Amazon. That'll keep you busy for quite some time.

You are a writer. A writer we love to read. x0 N2

  7. Re. "And I remembered what it was like to let a character take me into her life and let me write down what was happening to her as it happened" - it's one of the best feelings imaginable, especially when the characters become as real as real people. Now you have a challenge: find a home for your stories. All stories need homes, a lot like their authors.

  8. goosebumps.

    phenomenal.

and what you said , about not knowing if maybe we just need to see, that these miracles are always there, and we need to see them. I don't know either. I'm okay with that.
