Today's Report

That is a very small king snake who found its way onto the back porch last night during the storm we had. I didn't even notice it but Glen did. So did Jack who was quite curious. King snakes are absolutely not harmful and are good for helping keep down vermin around the place but they wear the same colors as coral snakes which have a deadly venom. The patterns of the colors are different though. There's an old rhyme that goes, "Red touches yellow, kills a fellow/Red touches black, friend of Jack."
I can never remember that. So I have to look it up every time. And that is definitely a king snake. Glen picked it up with my yard grabber thing and put it back out in the storm. I'm sure it could have crawled under the house easily enough.
It stormed hard last night but I've heard no reports of tornados or high winds. Lots of thunder and lightening and pelting rain though. Tom did not spend the night so I guess he just hunkered down in the part of his trailer that is still somewhat of a shelter.
Mr. Moon was over there at dawn this morning to get to work again on clearing. Tom's decided that in order to disturb the fewest plants, he will get a new power pole to hook the tiny house up to. Which is fine except that he'll have to be on a wait list but he's okay with that.
So Glen finished up what he needed to do over there for one day and it was raining pretty heavily by early afternoon so he came on home, washed off the little excavator, and took it back to where he'd rented it from.
Here's the funniest thing- Glen absolutely LOVED working with that small piece of heavy machinery on the land. It made him so happy. That man needs a little piece of his own land where he can clear and build a hunting camp, maybe put in a cabin. He could not have been more cheerful when he got home. I have no idea how Tom felt but I sincerely doubt that "cheerful" would be anywhere on a list of descriptors.
So after Glen goes back over there tomorrow morning and does a little more work, all will be ready to bring in the tiny house and get it settled in. Or down. Or whatever you have to do with a tiny house.

I actually did some dusting today. I am not sure if I still have a cleaner or not. I think I do but Candie hasn't been able to make it for several weeks. I got to the point where I could not look at the dust on my wood furniture any more and decided to do something about it myself.

That's the vanity in my bedroom and it is a beautiful piece of furniture. When it gets really dusty, I feel so guilty because I am not honoring it the way I should. So I got out the wood treatment oil and some soft cloths and gave my furniture a little love. I mostly just hit the big pieces and I still haven't done the piano but it makes me happy to know that I've made a little bit of difference.

I've thought a great deal today about the post I wrote yesterday and I love all the thoughtful comments I got. The whole subject of weight and the many, many related issues are at once so very intimate, personal, touchy, and misunderstood. Shame and science are of equal importance. There are so many myths about weight management and there is so much we do not know or understand yet. And I will be talking about this more.

But right now I need to...go make our supper.

We were watching Northern Exposure the other night (we are taking it so very slowly) and one of my very favorite scenes from the entire show came up. It involved Adam, an extremely bizarre and eccentric master chef who was working with a group of hopeful chefs-to-be. Trying to get to the very root of cooking, he asked the trainees why they thought he cooked.
"WHY do I cook?" he kept asking. They stared at him blankly until one woman finally said...

"YES! YES!" he shouted. "Because I am hungry!"

I relate to that so much.

I guess I'm hungry and so I shall go cook.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. I'm glad Glen enjoyed his land clearing so much. It's always so satisfying when you can accomplish what you set out to do. I feel that way about IVs.

I'm also glad we don't have snakes around here. I'm not afraid of snakes but I can do without them.

    1. I will probably never get an IV in my life without thinking of you and wishing you were doing it.
Snakes are okay. They can be startling but they're generally not a real bother.

  2. That's a beautiful little snake. We rarely see them. For

    1. We rarely see them either but I know they are here, all around.

  3. Working the land and seeing a construction project come together is very satisfying. It seems like Glen and Tom have a plan for the Tiny House and that is very good. My neighbor bought himself a used Bobcat (excavator) and he is having such a good time. It must be a guy thing! I prefer snakes in the garden. When they enter the patio, porch or house, I'm not that brave.

    1. Glen bought an excavator once. He was the most envied man of all the men he knew. I can't remember why he bought it or why he sold it but I'm sure there were good reasons.
Yeah, I'm not wild about snakes in the house.

  4. A parcel of land for Glenn would be just right- he could homestead and build and do machines and most of all feel one with the earth- his little parcel of earth. Nothing better, if one has the energy, and clearly he does. He would build such a fine little cabin.
    I am still fat.....btw

    1. I am still fat too, for your information.
Glen would be so happy with what you described. He is a doer.

  5. Will you be able to show us a photo of Tom's new abode once it has been bedded in?
I think Mr Moon needs is own little digging machine. Maybe he could dig up the plants that you can't.

I will show a picture of Tom's house.

    2. I really hope to see Tom's house. My dream, should I become a widow; a tiny house !!

  6. I remember Adam in that show! I'll have to watch it again. Right after I get through Supernatural, Grimm, Eureka and Warehouse 13 and the latest NCIS Hawaii episodes.
Back on track, that's a very pretty snake, I don't think we have anything so colourful here in Australia.

    1. Oh my gosh! You have a HUGE watch list!
I always imagine Australia as being filled with snakes. Is that not true?

    2. Not in the cities though some find their way there, rural Australia is their preferred place I think.

  7. Why DON’T I cook? Because someone else will.

The vanity IS beautiful. I love polishing wood furniture. So satisfying. Tom would drive me crazy. Oh, and that’s a little ditty you wouldn’t want to remember incorrectly. It reminds me of Danny Kaye and the flagon with the dragon or the vessel with the pestle.

    1. Haha! I guess there's more to my love of cooking than just being hungry but it does add to it.
When I first met Glen and he had the honor of visiting my bedroom and saw that vanity, he loved it so much. In fact, within a week or so, HE was polishing it. It didn't take a psychic to know that this man was going to ask me to marry him.
Yeah. You're right about the snake rhyme. Black on yellow, kill a fellow? Red on yellow, kill a fellow? Whatever.

  8. I am not sure what you mean by a " tiny house". Is it like a caravan on wheels or a type of " hut" that will have to be lifted in somehow?

    1. It's a literal tiny house. And it will be hauled in on a trailer.

  9. It is a shame he could not use the excavator to dig up all the stuff in your garden that you hate...would love to see a photo of the tiny house if Tom permits.

    1. I was wondering if I could ask Glen to do a little yard work here while he still had the equipment but he's on such a timeline with this house project that I didn't want to get in the way of that.

  10. I love that you actually took a photo of the screen showing that subtitled punch line. :)

I wonder what's up with Candie?

    1. We always have subtitles on. We're both deaf. One of us profoundly. (Not me.) And I was so excited that scene was coming up that I got ready so I could take the picture.
I do not know what's up with Candie. She still calls me Mom so I guess we're good.

  11. I'm wondering if you have Habitat for Humanity anywhere near you as that sounds like a charity that Mr. Moon might enjoy volunteering for. I know he is usually pretty busy but it does sound like he has a helpful nature and it makes him feel good. He might get to excavate more!?! Just a thought. Have a good week, Mary!

    1. Oh yes, we have Habitat For Humanity here. Glen might like volunteering but I'm sure he'd rather be working on his own little chunk of earth. He does many helpful things just taking care of his family and friends!

  12. I am with your husband. I loved working with the little excavator when we cleared the back of the garden, comes second to my favourite toy, the power cleaner. I am also fond of the power sander but there's the dust . . .
How to live with snakes, I have no idea, you are brave people.

    1. I do not think I've ever used a non-domicile power tool. And I don't even like vacuums. I do love my food processor and mixer though. Do those count?
When you live with snakes all your life and have never gotten bitten or even really known anyone that got bit, you sort of become more at peace with having them around.
