Well, I am at it again. There are seven pints of beans in that canner and I have three more ready to go in when those are done. This will mean that I've already canned twenty four pints of beans and honestly, that's probably enough for our bean needs but I can give some away which will be nice. You'd be surprised at how many people I offer fresh vegetables to who have no idea how to cook them. I can't imagine never having cooked fresh green beans. One woman I offered some to told me that she had no idea what to do with them because her mother never taught her.
I'm sorry that happened but damn- you could probably find a video on YouTube that would explain the process to you. I'm pretty sure there are YouTube videos on how to perform appendectomies, rebuild a car engine, and roof a house.

I'm sorry for being bitchy. I'm tired. I worked out in the garden for a whole hour today which was all I could handle before I started feeling slightly nauseous. I really thought I'd been out there for at least two hours but no, just one. I pulled up the one remaining collard plant and the rest of the kale, all of which had been laced to the stems by little green worms. And then I did some weeding where the kale had been because we're going to plant crowder peas there.
I spent the rest of the day snapping beans and doing all that canning stuff which is a process, I have to say. Not hard, but time-consuming. Pole beans are honestly pretty easy to prep for canning- just snap the ends off, snap them in two or three pieces, and then blanch them. You don't even have to blanch them but if you do, it's easier to fit them into the jars.
The best news of the day is that the Tiny House is in place and now open! Hurray! Glen sent me a little tour video and I'd love to share it with you.
I think Glen's proud of himself and I may be even prouder of him than that. Not just for all the hard work he's put into this project but also for being so forbearing and patient with Tom. Okay, he did cuss him out a little one time but he has not thrown any machetes and stalked off to get in his truck and come home.
So that's really the big deal around here.
The place on my chest that the dermatologist froze yesterday looks DISGUSTING. I mean, I'd post a picture but I do have some respect for your sensibilities.
Here's a few pictures from today.
That is a great little home for Tom! It certainly has everything he could possibly want in a home! So cute and kudos to Glen for getting ole Tom settled in!
ReplyDeleteWell, he won't be settled in until he can get water and power hooked up. Also septic. So we're not there yet.
DeleteThank heavens that The Tiny House is now in its proper place and that Tom has the keys to his new life. Well done Glen Moon for facilitating this move.
ReplyDeleteWell done, indeed!
DeleteThat little house is pretty close to perfect. I hope Tom realizes everything is as his camper was, only intact. Great job, Mr. Moon.
ReplyDeleteHis previous home was a house trailer, not a camper, so very similar in dimensions. But oh, how clean and bright this one is. And with wood instead of metal.
DeleteThe Tiny House is perfect. Tom has a decent sized shower, I do too, but you should see some of the showers in the flats here! A supermodel thin person would be okay, but the rest of us would be showering while bumping elbows and knees on the walls and glass doors. I hope Tom will in time be pleased with his new home.
ReplyDeleteI am astonished at how many people don't know how to cook fresh vegetables, but when I think about that, I realise many have probably grown up with canned or frozen foods that just get microwaved. The cooking skills have not been passed on as they were in the past . Those who want to know will find out via youtube, but too many won't care.
Can you put some bird netting over parts of the fig and blueberry plants so the birds don't get the whole crop?
Yep. Full-sized shower! Pretty cool. Full-sized bathroom, in fact.
DeleteI think that many people don't even know what fresh vegetables taste like which is the saddest thing. I know that my mother did cook some fresh vegetables but she jumped on that convenience train pretty enthusiastically. I remember the instant mashed potatoes...
Oh dear god no.
I could net, I'm sure, but I'm too lazy.
Fresh veggies are the best and your pantry will be very well stocked. It is surprising how many people do not want to cook. I like a restaurant meal like everybody else, but I love to prepare most meals at home. Everything is fresh and tasty. Your venison stuffed peppers sound outstanding. The TH looks wonderful and I hope Tom appreciates all that Glen has done for him.
ReplyDeleteThe peppers were great! And I got to use up some leftover rice and spaghetti sauce. I love to cook our food, especially the things we grew or that Glen brought home from the sea or river or woods.
DeleteThat tiny house looks big. It's so nice. I hope Tom starts to like it.
ReplyDeleteI agree about vegetables. Anyone can learn, silly to blame your mother the rest of your life! And I can vouch for the taste of those pole beans
You know what? I seriously doubt that the woman I was talking about has ever had fresh green beans. Is that possible? Perhaps. I don't know. She probably would think that fresh vegetables taste weird.
DeleteEven if Tom never says it, I am sure he is very grateful for all the help Mr Moon has given him.
ReplyDeleteI prefer to watch the birds eat the produce in this garden than harvest it. But then it's not my garden and the birds are spectacular.
Who cannot cook a vegetable? Even the microwave will tell you how to do it if you press the right button.
I think Tom does appreciate what Glen's done but there are so many factors involved here that affect his thinking now that it is hard to tell.
DeleteI bet you do have some cool birds!
I agree the tiny house is fabulous! What a perfect size for Tom. That is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI used to pressure can green beans all summer. I even entered some in the county fair once and got second place. I was very proud of myself, lol. Here in Northern Ohio we don't get beans until later in the summer into fall.
I've never entered any sort of cooking competition except for a Girl Scout cake contest. I think I got a second place too!
DeleteWe'll be getting these beans for months.
I would like to nominate your baby fig picture for the next US postage stamp design. (Not that they're soliciting nominations...) I can't even say why-- it just looks like it would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteI agree! It's a cool picture. Point and shoot.
DeleteThe little house is way more gorgeous and user friendly than I thought it would be! It is a gem! I could live there ! Well done Mr. Moon! Champion!!
ReplyDeleteIt really does have everything, Linda Sue. Even a porch! I, too, would live in one. Not much storage but Tom has other buildings he can use for that.
DeleteCongrats on the bean canning! You certainly sound like you know what you are doing! I have never canned anything in my whole life.
ReplyDeleteThe tiny house looks great and it has nice furnishings, too. I hope Tom is very happy there. It was nice to hear Mr. Moon's voice.
I don't think that canning is a life-requirement so- no worries.
DeleteI am impressed with that furniture! Did Glen sound like you thought he would?
What a wonderful little house! It was a treat to hear Mr. Moon too!
ReplyDeleteYes! You have heard what Mr. Moon sounds like.
DeleteI like his voice very much, it's calm.
DeleteI wish I could perform appendectomies but my mother never taught me. So kind of you to maintain a garden to feed all the birds. That little house is wonderful. Congratulations to Glen. I hope Tom likes it and appreciates it.
ReplyDeleteHaha! You made me laugh out loud quite literally.
DeleteThe birds should be satisfied with all the high dollar bird food we feed them. Some of it looks like trail mix and I'd eat it in a pinch. You would think that would satisfy them but no, they need fresh fruit too, greedy little creatures.
Isn't that a nice tiny house?
Oh I love that tiny house! I actually gave some thought (briefly) into moving into one when I was in my "let's chuck it all in and backpack round the world" stage, but Boud (I think it was) was right. You need those homes to be located in places where you can spend a lot of time outside! It's lovely though. Well done Mr. Moon!
ReplyDeleteAnd Tom does spend a great deal of time outside. His former house was a house trailer about the same size as this house so he's used to that.
DeleteThat's a lovely house and what a great job well done!
ReplyDeleteOne of our neighbours often calls to pick leaves from our vines to make dolmas, Turkish stuffed vine leaf rolls. She only recognises peppers, tomatoes and vine leaves. Yesterday, she looked at the small unripe green pears on one of the pear trees and said, these are cucumbers, yes?
She is otherwise a very pleasant friendly neighbour.
I love dolmas. I had a friend who worked at a nursery who said that people would come in to shop for grape vines and taste the leaves to decide which ones to buy. I'll never forget that.
DeleteWhat a funny neighbor!
I posted a picture if a hydrangea today too. It's that time of year.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THE TINY HOUSE! I would totally live in that. It's compact but the space seems well used.
I can't imagine not knowing how to cook a green bean.
We're hydrangea-posting twins, Steve.
DeleteYou know how to cook green beans because you had good home-raising.
Well done Mr. Moon. So much more I want to say, but even a fool when she holds her tongue is counted wise.
ReplyDeletePatricia
You can say all you want here!
DeleteI love that tiny home, although making that bed would be a pain in the ass. I was deeply impressed by the size of the shower. It was so nice to hear Mr. Moon's voice:)
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine having a smart phone and not looking up, how do I cook green beans. Whatever. It looks like the birds around your place are well fed too.
I'm not sure that making the bed is one of Tom's priorities.
DeleteI guess if you've never really eaten and definitely never cooked green beans, you don't even think about it.
The birds are very well fed at the feeder here. Treats galore! Plus all the free fresh fruit.
What a cute little tiny house. I'd move in, in a heartbeat.
ReplyDeleteMy mother tended to boil all vegetables to the mushy stage. I prefer to grill veg in the summer, and roast in the winter, though do admit that microwaving frozen peas and carrots is a go-to year round. Although I like green beans, neither of my kids did/do. We'll chalk that up to a nasty babysitter, 'nuf said.
I think that cooking vegetables to within an inch of their lives was standard practice back in the day. I know my mother cooked squash until it was mush and then, she mashed it for good measure. She told us it was "Donald Duck food." We were not impressed.
DeleteWell done, Glen! What a wonderful thing to do for Tom and the house is cute!
ReplyDeleteI don't have beans yet, but lots of flowers. I've purchased some fresh green beans from the farmer's market already, though. I'm always amazed at how many people can't cook basic food. I couldn't live on take-out...or I wouldn't want to.
Well, if you have flowers on those vines, you'll be eating beans within a week or two. No doubt. I want to hear a report!
DeleteLiving on take-out sounds like a nightmare, doesn't it?
Yes, well done Mr. Moon! It looks cozy and very comfortable. Hope Tom gets to enjoy many happy days there. I love looking at tiny homes but I realize I’m a maximalist and won’t ever be able to live in one.
ReplyDeleteWell done you for all that canning! You’ll get great satisfaction seeing all those jars in your pantry.
Xoxo
Barbara
I think I could live in a tiny house. For at least awhile. I have spent some portions of my life in very small spaces and no, I have not been to prison. Yet.
DeleteI am already so happy to see my shelves fill up with green beans! Now come on, tomatoes and cucumbers!
Great job Moons - on the canning and the housing! They both look good. I had to turn down my radio station so I could hear Glen talking and it was worth it. x0x0 N2
