Sometimes Plain Is Plenty Fancy

Dress the salad in nothing but this:
Olive oil, the best you can buy
Lemon juice, vinegar, salt and pepper.
Those freshest tender greens from the garden,
A good tomato from the store if you have none in your yard
A carrot, sliced into thin coins of saffron orange, a monk's robe of color
And maybe a cucumber if you have it.
Throw in some tiny flowers for the olive oil to kiss, the vinegar to bite
The eye to delight
In.

Dress the boy in nothing but this:
A diaper made of soft cotton
Pinned with blue duckie diaper pins
And a pair of shoes to protect his feet.
He is made of the sweetest skin which calls my fingers to touch, over and over
Which calls my mouth to kiss over and over,
Especially that sweet shoulder, that neck, when I pick him up
And hold him to me,
The silkiest hair which I blow to make him laugh.
Give him a flower to look at in the sunlight
Let him kiss its face with his.
Let my eye delight in that, that plain, pure sight
Of this.

  8. I like that you put pansies in your salad. I know that nastursiums can be put in salad but didn't realize that pansies were good to eat.
