May Day
Well, as my dear friend Lynn used to say, "First of May, First of May. Outdoor fucking begins today."
I think it was a James Taylor quote.
Or, as my friend Kathleen said, "And come this May I am going to dance on the eve and the night of May Day and howl at the moon and celebrate that I am alive and that I have people of all kinds in my life and that my heart is full of love and spring and May and celebrate as my ancestors before me have done on May Day, Beltane, over millennium and I will appreciate my paganism and look at all the people in my yard, my dogs, cats, chickens, fish and rabbit and the plant people and their lovely green bodies and flowers and the fur and feathers that cover my animal people and know that I am free."
May Day.
And last year I wrote this about my HoneyLuna's birth and if you'd like you can go back there and read it because nothing celebrates May Day like thinking about the birth of a baby at home, surrounded by people who loved her tremendously from the first breath she took while the white magnolia blossoms filled the air with perfume and a rainbow was in the sky.
Happy May Day. I command you to go celebrate in some way, suited best to you, whether it be making love in the grass, dancing under the moonlight or birthing a baby in your bed.
As long as joy is involved, I will approve.

ReplyDeletemaking in love in the grass sounds good to me....
ReplyDelete...maybe next may day
Happy May day! I suspect I'm gonna see my mama in a play and do birthday stuff with my sister and granny.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful birth story you have of Jessie's birth! I think it would be wonderful in so many ways to birth at home, but alas, I have my babies in a birthing center...much less 'clinical' than a typical hospital, but still a bit medical. My dear W, is not cut out for the home birth type of thing. Either way, your birth story makes me even more excited for the birth of this baby I am carrying! Crazy as a lot of people think I am, I get excited about labor and delivery...It is just the most amazingly powerful experience I have yet to have in my life...SIGH...
ReplyDeleteAhh, making love in the grass sounds fabulous, even though the task itself is getting to be quite akward and difficult these days :0)
Happy May Day, Ms. Moon, and happy birthday HoneyLuna and Granny Moon!
Thank you Mama! Those are such beautiful pictures too.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you Justme! That's so exciting that you're having another baby and I wish you the best of luck with your pregnancy and labor, (something I am very fond of too even though I have never been pregnant.)
Learner- Well, you can just go roll around in some grass by yourself. And make plans for next year....
ReplyDeleteDTG- I suspect you will.
JustMe- I was so fortunate to be able to birth at home. And I know that.
And awkward? So what! It'll be worth it!
HoneyLuna- Those are nice pictures, aren't they? That's what Lloyd looks like on your birthday.
:)
ReplyDeleteAh, god, I love a good birth story. The first of May is a great birthday-day.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of 'making love in the grass', all that comes to mind is ants in my ass crack.
ReplyDeleteDamn, I'm such a stick in the mud.
I think I will celebrate today by hovering over my garden. Bring forth the tomatoes!
I think that may be the best birth story I've ever read. Happy Birthday to that lovely girl.
ReplyDeleteNicol- Back at you.
ReplyDeleteMs. Jo- Isn't it?
Lady Lemon- I just checked on my own tomatoes. They're coming along. Slowly. We need rain!
Steph- It was a lovely birth. Perfect. Well, except for the egg salad part.
I am a sucker for birth stories. Loved yours!
ReplyDeleteMay is the 'month of a million birthdays' in my family and includes three of my four siblings' birthdays, four of my aunts, eight cousins and one of my lovely children, Rosey.
Today it's rainy and gloomy, but I can tell this May is going to be grand!
Ahhh one of my favorite sayings..we used to sing it High School to each other and giggle. Being a pagan I try to keep up the tradition but here in the north we are expecting wet weather which could mean for wet...... Still I might haul out the maypole. Its probably too wet for our usual bonfire but our Firday nite jam will be good enough. Merry Beltane to you!
ReplyDeleteErin- We have three birthdays in May. But not a million. Our are spread from May through September. But it is definitely the beginning of the birthday season!
ReplyDeleteSally- I'll think about you tonight!
hahahahahaha
ReplyDeleteHappy May Day to you as well! Thanks for COMMANDING me to find some joy. Haha. I think I shall. I could use a stress reliever.
Lovely story about your baby, btw. My mother wanted to name me Jessica after her granfather, Jesse Carl. Didn't happen because it didn't sound right with my father's last name. She should have just gone with Jesse (or Jessie), I like it better anyway.
ReplyDeletePS - To satisfy the craving, my mother now has a dog named Jessie. Whom she mostly calls "wisteria", for some unknown reason.
ReplyDeleteOMG looking at the pictures is everything in your yard in bloom? I have green patches and mud
ReplyDeleteAJ- Relieve your stress with joy. Yes. That sounds good.
ReplyDeleteLady Lemon- Jessie (or Jesse) is a fine name, but then again, so is Wisteria.
Sally- We're full on. Everything is about as green as it gets.
I celebrated my May Day by spending it with my sister, holding my baby niece for *hours* and it couldn't have been more joyful.
ReplyDeleteOff to read your birth story now. I can't get enough birth stories!
that last line is the business.
ReplyDeleteLora- That was a lovely way to celebrate.
ReplyDeleteMaggie- I wish you joy.
