If You're Here Looking For A Recipe You Won't Find It. Tonight, Anyway

So. Here's some advice from Mary's dream world:
Do not invite Mick Jagger to attend a Mormon wedding.
Just don't.
He'll insist on singing with the band (band? at a Mormon wedding?) and the song he'll insist on singing is "Sympathy for the Devil."
"Mick," I told him in the dream, "Don't do that. They will kill you."

I woke up before the performance or a murder.

Hey! He was just trying to be friendly.

Anyway, that was an interesting dream and there was a great deal more of it but that was the easiest part to relate. I think it's hysterical that I have combined my seemingly unrelated obsessions in one dream.

As I said yesterday, today was go-to-town-and-shop day. And yes, it took me almost all day mostly because I had lunch with Hank, Rachel, Lily, Jessie, and Levon before I even began. That was fun. We went to The Wharf where guess what? They serve seafood. However, I got a Greek salad with chicken on it and it was good. We all talked to Levon about his birthday. He's excited but not crazy excited. He's taking it all in stride like the miniature full-grown man that he is. He really is like a little man in so many ways. As Jessie said to me recently, "If he could just get up at 5:30 every morning and go to work, he'd be such a happy guy."
And he would. The kid needs a job.
Have I already told you this? Forgive me if I have. It bears repeating.

Kid who needs a job. Preferably in construction.

He turns four next Tuesday but Jessie and Vergil are throwing him a little family get-together on Saturday. It'll be potluck and there will be presents and a cake. It is so nice to be able to all come together for these events. And soon, August, Maggie, and Gibson will be vaccinated too. Owen has had one of his doses. Our family has been as careful as we can be and all of the adults have been vaccinated of course, and we are so lucky that none of us has gotten sick. Not even May who works in the wellness department of the local Co-op where people come in search of natural remedies for Covid along with things to boost their immune systems because they refuse to get the shots. And of course many of them do not wear masks because...well.
I shall say no more.

So that will be fun and tomorrow it is "Grandpanthers Day" at Maggie and Gibson's school where we will meet each child at their lunch period and dine with them. Maggie's lunch is so early that it will be our breakfast and Gibson's is so late that it will be our lunch. I bought chicken roll-ups at Costco today to take, and fresh pineapple at Publix along with a bag of chips. I'll take apple fritter cake too.

To be honest, I am a little exhausted just thinking about all of it. Or perhaps I'm just exhausted from my trip to town. By the time I got home I realized that perhaps I am not entirely at full-strength yet.

Here is a picture of some chickens.

Can you see the two hiding in the woods? I swear, I think that these birds make a complete round of our yard every day, scratching in every part of it. They hardly ever leave the yard but sometimes they do wander next door to scratch about in the dirt parking lot/yard of the church. They always find their way home. I do not like them crossing the street and they generally never do. Now I KNOW I've told this story before but it's one of my favorites:
When we first moved here, our then next-door neighbor, Scott, got some chickens. This was well before I'd ever even thought of having chickens of my own. He let them free-range in his yard every day and, concerned, I asked him, "Scott, aren't you afraid they'll go out in the street and get run over?"
Scott looked down at me (he's almost as tall as Mr. Moon) and said, "Have you ever seen a dead chicken in the road?"
Well, I had not and seventeen years later I still haven't.
So- when someone asks the question- Why did the chicken cross the road? simply say, "She did not. The chicken did not cross the road."
I'm not saying that chickens never get run over or that they never cross the street. I'm just saying it must be pretty rare.

On a side note, I've been looking for recipes this evening for taco seasoning and I swear to god- the freaking autobiographies that people feel compelled to write before they give you the recipe drives me crazy.
"We don't give a shit how many times a week you ate tacos as a kid, bitch!" I silently scream in my head.
And then.
And then.
And then I realize I just told y'all what I'm taking to Grandpanthers Day for my grandchildren's lunches and talked about chickens for possibly the 987th time. At least. And I don't even have a recipe to give you.

Please forgive me. I have no idea why you're here but I sure am glad you are.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Mary, there's nothing to forgive! I love the way you think, and I love the way you write, and damn, woman. You're just a good egg. A real good egg!

Levon, on the other hand, is a miniature Glen Moon. I have a feeling he's going to grow up to be just like his Boppy. He looks a lot like him, too.

    1. Jennifer- I think you may be right about Levon. He doesn't look so much like him in my eyes as reminds me of him. Even Jessie says that August is so much Weatherford and Levon is so much Moon.

  3. yes I hate the 6 paragraphs before they finally get to the recipe. I don't read them. I just grumble about it as I scroll down to what I want.

    1. That's what I do too. Maybe I hate them so much because I am tempted to read them and I DON'T WANT TO!

  4. This is so hilarious. If there were a blog hug I'd have given you one!
Considering how I'm feeling on day two I'm surprised at how much you're up for. I took a shower and slept for two hours to recover.

    1. I hear you, woman. Day two was a complete surprise to me. I simply could NOT do anything. And honestly, I still don't feel like I have all my energy back.

  5. Sounds like a fine day. Levon is a character. Have answered your question re the cult on your last blog entry. You probably will have heard of em. Big in America. Maggi

    1. Yes! Definitely had heard of him. Guru Maharaj Ji. I knew a lot of people who were part of his flock. And a friend of mine's sister was his nanny! I was never the least bit tempted to get involved but a whole lot of people sure did.

    3. I agree. I was living in Denver when his "temple?" was there. Did not tempt me at all.

  7. That boy is growing like a weed.

Hope you have a lovely time tomorrow at grandparents day. I'm sure you will.

I just finished reading "Educated" by Tara Westover and it's a story of abuse and violence which breaks my heart. I found her website and her emailed her. I told her that I was sorry about the abuse she had gone through at the hands of her family and it seems that religion is used as an excuse to cover a multitude of sins such as abuse, murder, war, misogyny, the list goes on.

Abuse in the name of a god is despicable as far as I'm concerned.

And can you have too many posts about chickens? I don't think so:)

    1. Isn't that an amazing book? I actually bought it- one of the few I've bought in the last few years. I'm glad you e-mailed the author.
      Religion sucks donkey dicks.
Unlike chickens who actually do a great deal for humans.

  8. Levon turning four is hard to believe but what a handsome little boy. I hope he enjoys his birthday and that you both enjoy grandparents day. I am not quite full strength yet either.

I think Levon is gorgeous but you know- he's my grandson.

  9. I love reading about your day......just before I clicked on you this morning I said to myself, I wonder what Mary has been up to this time. Please just keep on writing in the same way. ( and showing that gorgeous little boy!). Interesting that the chickens keep away from the road. Perhaps they don't like the feel of the surface? They can't scratch it!

    1. Thank you for your very, very kind words, Frances. I really appreciate them.
Perhaps you are right about the chickens not liking the paved road. Dirt is their preferred surface for sure.

  10. Ha ha, I love that chicken story. But I always thought the answer to "why did the chicken cross the road?" was "to get to the other side"! And happy birthday to Levon - maybe Mick Jagger will come and sing at his party!

    1. Yes. I'll be sure to ask Mick if he'd come sing. I'm sure that Jessie and Vergil would be happy to accompany him.

Well, I swear I never knew that you were a Mormon Ms Moon. I didn't realise that Mormons cussed so much. Why don't you move to Salt Lake City to live among your kind?

You must be so proud that all of your family have embraced vaccination. We have a friend - a nurse near the end of her career whose two grown up sons refuse to be vaccinated. She is so ashamed of them for this.

    1. I'm not a Mormon! I'm just sort of obsessed with them. Or at least podcasts about them.
I'm not overly proud of my family- I just think we all have good sense. But I sure am glad none of us has gotten sick.

  12. Thank you for pointing out that chickens don't cross the road. Never have to answer that question again. :)

My seven year old GS had his first Covid jab at his pediatrician's office yesterday morning. They wanted him to lay on the exam table to get it (in his leg), but he said, "No, thank you. I want to watch what you are doing." So he sat on the table and watched. No problem.

    1. Had to add this...checking on GS this morning (doing fine, just a bit of a sore leg), my DD told me that when his Dad came home last night, C told him, "I got my shot to help protect me and the community." Would that others (well over the age of seven) cared as much about their own communities.

  14. That's just the point. Sometimes we need a recipe, not a story and sometimes we need the stories. My barred rocks were avid road crossers in the spring when they discovered all the yummies hiding under the forest mulch. They all survived the 'traffic'. Your flock looks glorious.

    1. You're right- sometimes we need recipes, sometimes stories. Seems to me that a story with a recipe is okay if we've come for stories. But when you've come for a recipe and get damn story, it's not quite as cool.
Barred rocks, as you know, are more curious and daring than some breeds. I have learned that this year.

  16. I love Scott's comment about the chicken. Maybe they instinctively stay out of roads because roads are very open spaces, with no cover, and it seems like that might be dangerous for a chicken. (Never mind the cars, which I doubt they understand.)

    Levon is such a character!
