Being Grandparents

Good Lord. It felt like being Grandpanthers was an all-day event. Of course it really wasn't but with Maggie's lunch being before eleven and Gibson's being at almost one, we did spend quite a bit of time coming and going and dining with our darlings. There was also a book fair going on in the library and after each child's lunch we took them there to pick out and buy a book. So it was fun. Maggie did not like the Costco chicken roll-ups I'd bought nor the apple cake but her other grandma had brought cookies and between those, the fresh pineapple, the dill pickles, and the tortilla chips I'd packed, she would not starve.
"I've really enjoyed spending time with you," she said when we were walking her back to her classroom. She's so polite.

Gibson, on the other hand, ate everything. I'd brought him a pear because he reacts a little to eating pineapple. It makes his chin break out. He was so happy to see us. This is an annual event at their school and I can remember when Owen was just a little boy and we ate lunch with him. It's a special day for sure. I cherish this time when our grands aren't absolutely embarrassed and ashamed to be seen with the olds.

It's been rainy and cold all day. It truly does seem as if winter might be on the way. We've stayed in when we weren't dining and even had a nap after we got home from the second lunch. A good day for snuggling. In my annual ritual, I got out the duck. Poor thing. It's been smashed up all summer in a trash bag but it will puff out a bit as it relaxes from its plastic prison. Clean sheets, the duck, rainy, cold weather- perfection.

Tomorrow's birthday gathering for Levon has been postponed. Jessie woke up miserable with a cold. Levon and August have both had one and it was inevitable that Jessie would get it. I'm proud of her for having the intelligence to know it would be ridiculous to shop and cook and get ready for a party when she feels rotten. We may do a little thing on Tuesday, the actual birthday.

In food news, last night's tacos were so good they were a sin. I ate an inappropriate number of them. More than Mr. Moon! Tonight's menu is based on something I found for the first time in Publix yesterday.

And God said, "Let there be pizza!"
And I said, "Hell yeah!"
Dough is rising and now I need to start chopping delicious foods to put on the pizza. And of course martinis are about to be made.

It's been a very good day here in Lloyd.

Happy Friday, y'all.

Love...Ms. Moon

  2. GrandPANTHERS huh? Someday if/when I have a grandchild or two, I hope they have things like that I get to go to. And in Moderna booster news, I have had very little side effects. Just pretty sleepy. And now I'm boosted! Yahoo!!

    1. Oh, they will have things for grandparents to attend- trust me. I'm so glad you didn't have a bad reaction. Go, you!

  3. Sounds like a social whirl there. Maggie is such a good lunch partner. Gibson very satisfying when he enjoyed everything you produced.

I'm glad you were up to it.

    1. Maggie has lovely manners when she wants to. And Gibson is always a joy to feed.
I'm glad I was up to it too!

  4. You seem to have loads of good days down yonder. Those children make it so. Owen has stolen my heart.

    1. Thank you, Linda Sue. We do have some very fine days. And Owen has had my heart in his pocket since the second he was born. Or before, maybe.

  5. What a lovely day you had! I am hoping for a rare visit to my big grands today, ( 11 and 9) and maybe the baby will have been named, but I doubt it. They have only got another 2 weeks to decide before they have to " register" him! Nice to see a photo of you instead of you being behind the camera. You look happy.

    1. I was happy!
Interesting how your grandbaby's parents are having a hard time with a name. Do they have any leading contenders?

    2. They are giving nothing away on what names they might be discussing. I shall know soon though as they have an appointment to " register" him next Wednesday.

  6. I think grandparents's day is a lovely idea - but how do they deal with the children that either no longer have grandparents or they are not local? I'm just curious really. And it's a shame about Levon's birthday get-together but I think Jessie was right to delay it and give herself a break!

    1. I noticed yesterday that there did not seem to be as many grandparents as usual for lunch. Covid? I don't know. But the kids who don't have grandparents there just eat with everyone like usual. They did have a movie going on a large screen to make it a little special for everyone.
I'm glad that Jessie made that decision too.

  7. I made a shepherd's pie last night. That is one pot, pan, and utensil intensive dish but it was really good. I also bought pizza dough (in a can, not quite the cook you are) so I'm sure it will be on the menu soon.

I remember Grandparent Day at my grandkids school. I always went.

    1. Oh gosh, yeah. Shepherd's pie is a lot of work but it really is good. Pizza dough is a snap to make but the kind in a can is pretty tasty too.
I know you absolutely showed up as a grandmother. Hell- you still do!

  8. Is that "zero zero" pizza flour or "Oooh" pizza flour?

I laughed at you getting out the duck in the trash bag. I was picturing an actual DUCK, like a bird. I thought, "Was it in the freezer?"

Glad your grandpanthers event went well!

    1. Zero, zero. I think!
Yes. The duck is my comforter. I love it so much I gave it a name.

  9. I was trying to figure out about the "duck" also but figure you mean some sort of comforter filled with down feathers? I admit I was confused for awhile... :)
Grandpanthers day sounds like it was a success!
    Enjoy your pizza!

    1. Absolutely! The Duck is my down comforter. I love it more than I should.
The pizza was delicious! And will be again tonight.

  10. I hope my two make it possible for us to have grandparents day while I can still toddle into the school. Lovely and exhausting, if I recall the experience for my mom with my own two.
