High Holy Day At The Church Of The Batshit Crazy

Well, dammit, if you're going to create your own religion, then you get to choose which days are the most sacred. Am I right?

And I proclaim this day, November 1, 2009 as one of the highest and the holiest.
It makes perfect sense to me.

First off, it is incredibly gorgeous today. The gray has cleared from sky and heart. The sun is out, the humidity is low and the temperature is perfect. I have on long sleeves but my feet are bare. I am wearing blue, blue, blue.

Secondly, we got an extra hour of sleep. Now listen- I think it's ridiculous to fuck around with time but we do and this is the day we got to sleep an hour later and still get up at a reasonable time. The only things I love more than sleep are my children, my grandchild and my husband. So- more sleep- more happiness.

Thirdly, it is the Day of the Dead. Dia de los Muertos. They day we remember and honor and even create altars to the ones we love who have passed on.

Here is an altar that my children made for me in 2003 when I got back from Mexico. There are so many levels of sweetness there that I can't begin to count them and so, even though it is an old picture, it's appropriate.

And fourth- my camera has healed itself. I have been in ecstasy, walking around with it, taking pictures of this very venerated and blessed day. A small sort of miracle, but a miracle to me, nonetheless.

Hallelujah! And praise the day, the eye, the camera, the image, the flowers, the trees, the chickens, the doors, the windows, the babies, the sleep, and finally the ones we love who have crossed over back to that place from which we come and to which we go.

All right. Enough of talking. Here are pictures.

My first blooming camellia of the year. I want to say it's a Pink Perfection but I think it's not. But it's close. It's very close. I planted camellias and sasanquas when I moved here and they bloom in the fall and in the winter and they are as beautiful a flower as is on this earth. In my opinion.

A sable palm I planted. A young'un. My friend Tom brings me palms in pots and I put them in the ground and they grow. This one has grown several feet taller since I planted it and is by my front door. Here at the Church of the Batshit Crazy, we don't need to cut our palms to represent a savior's walk to his death. We just let them grow and this is one of my favorites.

A volunteer Zennia which has already had time to spring up from a seed from this year's summer flowers to bloom again. Rebirth? Oh yeah. We got it here at TCOTBSC. Glorious.

And new life? Colored eggs? Ah. We don't have to wait for one special Sunday in Spring. We get that here, every day. Fertility, flight, contentment, beauty- all wrapped up and living in my chicken coop.

And the trees- OH! THE TREES!
Branches reach into the sky and the Spanish moss hangs from it, gray beards of moss that gently toss in the breeze.

The light shines through the branches and makes stars in the daytime, shining off each leaf.

I wish you could see it all. I wish you could feel it all. I am sure it's beautiful where you are too, but this is what the beauty at my place looks like.

I am listening to the way everything sounds so much clearer, stronger, and sweeter today- the wind chimes and the birds and the breeze because there is less water in the air to impede the sound. Don't tell me that's not true- my ears hear the difference.

I am seeing the way the world has been washed clean by yesterday's rain.

And so I proclaim this day to be a most sacred one. I am going to take some time to think of those whom I miss who are not here any more. I am going to send them light and love and thank them for all the light and love they gave to me and be grateful they were part of my life.

I am going to continue to worship this day with its glory. I am going to be grateful.

I am celebrating.

Amen.

  5. Bethany- Planting bulbs sounds PERFECT for today- a prayer and an action for spring. Yay!

    Elizabeth- Yes!

Danielle- You would not want to sleep with the chickens. Too much chicken poop. Although the hen house is rather cozy, I have to say. But you may come visit if you want. There are actual guest rooms.

Michelle- Toco Tabasco, indeed! Now I am going to go make SOUP for a communion service.

  12. If I send you my camera, could you lay your hands on it and heal it? It's symptoms are: only able to take one picture, then freezing. I tried replacing the batteries - it's not a battery problem.
Could you at least pray for it?
    Can I hear an Amen?

  13. Ms. Lucy- Of course! But I fear it will do no good. Amen.

  16. I think I need a new recipe from my Ms Moon...maybe some of this soup you're making?? :)

It was beautiful here today, too. 55, sunny and perfect.

  17. Ginger- The chickens are on their day-roost. That's the young bunch. And that flower is perfection, isn't it?

Mel- Spanish moss is so cool and we have so much of it that I frequently forget it's there.

SJ- This soup? There is no recipe because it is made of so many different leftovers. No alpha, no omega. But I'll try and do a recipe soon.

  18. No biggie--I'll probably throw together something soon with whatever's left in my freezer anyway. So hard to use everything, yet so difficult for me to waste food.

With all this time on the road as of late, I'm just enjoying finally being able to cook.
