That is how blue the skies are around here these days of December. Absolutely Stab Your Heart Blue. If that's not a color name, it should be. Someone call Pantone.
I got more done today by noon than I generally get done all day. I don't know what happened to me. First of all, I got up early because Jessie and I had talked about going to the pottery studio's open hours this morning to try and finish up some projects but we decided to wait until the afternoon hours so I just got busy here. I took the trash and went to the post office. I carried the paper and cardboard out to the burn pile, I took out the compost, I stripped the bed, I washed the sheets, I folded and put up a load of laundry that had been in the dryer. I dried the sheets and remade the bed. I did another load of laundry.
I took this picture of the garden.
Sorry it's so dark. Due to the fact that what was a very small magnolia tree to the east of the garden has grown to gargantuan size, our garden gets less sun every day which is why our tomatoes and peppers never do very well. Or at least one of the reasons. But still- isn't that a pretty garden? You know I love my greens.
Then I drove to town, stopped by Costco, went to my compounding pharmacy for my hormones, and went to Jessie's to pick her up to go to the pottery studio. We both searched diligently among the most recent things to come out of the kiln and while I found two of my pieces, hers were still cookin'. Or whatever it is that pottery does in a kiln. Being fired, I guess. So she had really nothing to do because it's too late to start another project as there is only one more open studio day. She decided to walk on home (her house is quite near the park where the community center is) and get to work on some other projects. I sighed deeply and told her that I'd probably be okay without her but it would not be easy. I picked out two different shades of green glaze and painted my cracker tray and hoped for the best as I put it on the shelf to be fired.
Then I went to Publix, got a few more things I needed, and came home and made gumbo. Here's my roux.
I really should have cooked it a little more but that was all the time I wanted to give it and honestly, it'll do very well. The roux is what gives the gumbo the deep, dark, earthy undertones that make it so damn good.
And that is what I've done today!
Tomorrow I will be going to August and Levon's piano recital and then bringing them back here for a sleepover. Jessie and Vergil are going to a neighborhood Christmas cookie contest/party and it'll be nice for them to have a date night without having to worry about the boys waking up early which Levon always does. Plus, we are overdue for a visit from them. I'll be making pizza for them because honestly, I am pretty much burnt out on the chicken and dumplings.
The kids and I have been texting back and forth all day and this evening's topic is what to name Jessie's cookie entry. They are going to be a rosemary/lemon shortbread sandwich cookie with raspberry cream filling. So far my favorite suggestion has come from Lily which is, "Rosemary's Raspberry Lemonade Babies."
Glen has had a very hard day due to problems at Moon Plaza which are going to take much effort and a hell of a lot of money to deal with. He's wound up as tightly as he can be which is a rare state for him to be in. However, we are on our first martini and hopefully, he'll feel better soon, although the problem is not going to go away that easily. This is how upset he is: He got invited to go fishing tomorrow morning and he turned the offer down because he has too much on his mind.
That's a first. I will do my wifely best to reassure him that all will be well. Easy for me to say, right?
Better go stir the gumbo.

Happy Friday, y'all.
Love...Ms. Moon
P.S. Any suggestion for a name for those cookies would be appreciated and considered.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
wow, I'm in awe of what sounds like a really good day for you! So glad to hear it! And....doing your *wifely best* is as Mr Moon does his *husbandly best* for you....and that is what we do for those we love! Tomorrow will be a whirlwind of boys for you...... but enjoy that Martini (or plural) tonight and put on your skates for tomorrows fun!
ReplyDeleteSusan M
That's a major day! It's been years since I've put in that many hours.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest- me too.
DeleteThat cookie name is perfect!
ReplyDeleteI think what happened to you was that colonoscopy ... cleaned you out for a positive outlook! LOL
I think it was more of an energy level thing than an outlook thing.
DeleteThat was a busy day. Mr moon must be under great pressure if he gave up a fishing chance. I hope he gets it resolved soon.
ReplyDeleteThis is not going to be an overnight fix.
DeleteSigh.
The rural road I live on has several di fferent names too. Depending on the age of the person you are talking to, they don't have a clue what street we are referring to! It's an ancient First Nations route so it does meander, even though it's the dividing line between two townships.
ReplyDeleteI imagine that many of our oldest roads here are also originally First Nation routes. Perhaps before that- deer trails! It would be fascinating to be able to follow the history of some of them.
DeleteRoute One locally, a six lane highway, was originally a Lenni Lenape walking trail between bodies of water.
DeleteAt our last book club, and woman brought rosemary short bread in. It was interesting. I think some raspberry cream filling might not have gone amiss though. Rosemary Berry?
ReplyDeleteAnd then there's the lemon, too...
DeleteLemon-Berry Surprise Cookies?
DeleteI love that cookie name and what a day you had! I hope Moon Plaza gets sorted out quickly.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Lily's name won.
DeleteLily's suggestion is brilliant- can't beat that one with a stick! You did more in the morning than most people do in a week. Maybe Moon Plaza is like Dennis's garage- nothing a lit match won't fix...Anyway, the garden looks mighty! I have garden envy.
ReplyDeleteOh god. Don't let Glen hear you say that about the lit match in relation to Moon Plaza OR his garage.
DeleteEventually, the piece of property itself is going to be worth a lot of money and then, I am sure, they will tear down the plaza.
"I took the trash and went to the post office" where I stamped and mailed it and hoped the recipient was as happy to receive it as I was to post it 🤣🤣🤣
ReplyDeleteLily's cookie name sounds just right. I hope the Moon Plaza problems are swiftly solved.
It looks to me like your garden has enough light, maybe your tomatoes and peppers need some fertilising? Some well-aged manure dug into the trenches before planting? or put them in a different spot, where they haven't been before, so the soil nutrients haven't yet been drained but still add the well-aged manure beofre planting them.
Well, here's the thing- the garden does NOT get enough light. You can't tell from that one picture. We have indeed done all that you suggested over the years. The fact of the matter is, certain plants need a certain number of hours of direct sunlight a day and we're just not getting that. The winter greens do fine but even they would do better with more light.
DeleteCan you keep a weather chart and find out which part of your yard gets the most sunlight for the longest daily time? Then put tomato and pepper grow bags there.
DeleteSo sorry about Mr. Moon’s Plaza problems. You know it’s bad if it’s got him obviously stressed. Can’t believe all you got done. I need a day like that... today! I love Lily’s cookie name!
ReplyDeleteAnd today I did hardly anything. You know how that goes. One day full tilt, the next day...I need a nap.
DeleteI'm not even sure Glen's going to go duck hunting tomorrow morning. This is big.
Oh, busy times. Sad to hear that Mr. Moon's problems are so much.
ReplyDeleteI like Lily's name "Rosemary's Raspberry Lemonade Babies" Maybe for ease of writing and saying I'd leave out the "Lemonade" part ;)
That photo of Stab your Heart blue sky is fab - this really should be a colour name, and I'll do my small part if you'd let me ;) I run a colour-challenge with a new colour each month - can I "steal" that photo - full credits, no money involved? And the name will be mentioned as well. Btw the colour code is 57,132,239 or #3984EF if you'd like to use it for something.
Ah, but you need the lemonade part because there are lemons in the cookies too.
DeleteYou may indeed use my picture. No problem.
Oh, i see. I understand lemonde as a thing to drink, or the taste thereoff - I'm not anative speaker - and bow to Liliy's wisdom.
DeleteThanks a lot for the permission, I'll throw you a link when it comes up.
Codex: I took a pottery class once with high ambitions. I have a mug that one can do anything with except drink from. Heavy earthenware. Sturdiest penholder I have ever had though.
ReplyDeleteCantonese (? Wth autosuggest?) Pantone's color of the year is an unpleasant red tinged beige. Could use some sky colors. (I paint too)
your pen holder made me laugh.
DeleteEww yes, that Pantone colour is unappetizing, even if the name is fine .. the opposite of "A Rose by any other name" ...
DeletePantone basically told us it's going to be s..tty year. Calling it mousse is kind of funny.
Delete@Ellen and Ms. Moon saw one of you do a color chart. Do you have aversions to certain colors?
I ask because certain colors irritate me. It's weird.
P.S. sigh. Codex asked the question.
DeleteCodex- You made me laugh too with your pen holder. I can relate. You are new here? I don't recognize your name. Hello and welcome! Also, yes and yes. I think Pantone knows exactly where this next year is headed and yes, I do have an aversion to certain colors and they are mostly in the beige, light brown area. Also boring grays. I like color. Color! Not shades of ecru.
DeleteI can’t wait to see your cracker dish glazed. And I do hope you will be sharing Jessie’s shortbread baby recipe!
ReplyDeleteIt was in the NYT's. The recipe, not the cracker dish. Haha! I'll have to look it up. I had one today and it was delicious.
Deletethose cookies sound divine. and I don't normally eat cookies. well, I ate the cookies you sent me, they were delicious. not too many blue sky days here lately. overcast again today. and yes you were busy! I love days when I get a lot accomplished. sounds like structural problems at Moon Plaza.
ReplyDeleteI sent you cookies? I can't remember shit these days. What is wrong with me? My brain is broken along with so many other of my body parts.
DeleteOvercast here the last two days too. Of course. We always get what you had.
Hoping things get straightened out soon for Mr. Moon. Jessie's cookies sound yummy. Enjoy the boys' sleepover.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be one hell of a problem to fix. I had a great time with those boys.
DeleteI can't do better than Lily's cookie name! Glad you got your pottery glazed, and I hope Moon Plaza gets sorted out without too much agita. What I wouldn't pay to see a sky like that here.
ReplyDeleteTo answer your headline question, NOTHING!
Steve, the sky has been absolutely unbelievably blue. Really, really pretty.
DeleteAnd you are so very sweet but there is a lot wrong with me. But I carry on.
