The Etiquette Of Eating Your Young, Plus Other Things

When I went to let the chickens out this morning I came upon this sight. Dottie and Darla were taking very polite turns daintily dipping their beaks into an egg with a hole broken into it. The funny thing is that I've been getting an egg like that one every day with a few cracks in it. Sometimes eggs do get cracked in the laying process but they're generally weaker-shelled eggs whereas these eggs have seemed rather sturdy.
Have Dottie and Darla turned into...CANNIBALS?
I think it's a possibility.
And damn.
Chickens do like eggs but I've never seen quite this behavior. And it's odd.
Lay an egg, eat an egg? And so forth?
Perhaps they have some sort of nutritional deficit but they're eating the same things they've always eaten. I give them laying pellets and corn scratch and food scraps and they spend their days scratching in the dirt in search of tasty bugs.
I will be observing them to see if I can figure out what's going on. I definitely hope that it's not a matter of these two hens developing a fondness for their unborn.

So I went to the mall today. I haven't been to the mall in probably a year. But I have to have a new pair of shoes to replace the ones that the soles spontaneously rotted on because I have very few shoes that socks can be worn with and it's about to get chilly again. I knew that Dillards carries Danskos and so I checked to see if they had the ones I want but they did not. I walked around a little bit, just in the shoe department and thought about the days when I shopped. I wanted to call Lis and tell her that I missed us being those shopping girls, looking for treasures whether of the shoe kind, or jewelry, or clothes. We were so good at hunting out bargains and sales and we had such good times.
Now we're too busy, I guess, and neither one of us seems to have a need to acquire new things. It's a little sad.

When I got home from town I went online to try and find the shoes I wanted and I did and everywhere I looked they all cost the same.
Check this out.

Whoa! A markdown of ninety-five cents on a pair of shoes that cost over a hundred dollars!
Take my money!
No. I did not order from that site. I went to the Dansko site and ordered there. They cost a dollar more but shipping was free. I hate spending that sort of money on shoes but if they are as comfortable as my old ones I will be wearing them frequently for the next ten years so I guess that's okay.

I had planned to cook our black-eyed peas with the ham bone from Christmas and some collard greens tomorrow but I just realized that is the the New Year's Day meal, not the New Year's Eve meal so I'll have to plan something else for tomorrow.
Sigh.
I swear- deciding what to cook for supper is just about the hardest thing I do all day.
Get out the tiny violins, right?

I'm going to an FSU basketball game tomorrow because Owen's basketball team is going to be doing something at halftime. Like...walking out on the court?
I have no idea but it won't kill me to go to a basketball game. I like the way the shoes of the players sound when they squeak on the floor. Also, Mr. Moon has informed me that they serve some awesome nachos at the venue. I used to like basketball more when the shorts the players wore were actually shorts and showed off those long, fine legs.
Oh well. I can look at my husband's legs whenever I want to look at a nice long leg. He's got two of them.

And speaking of the guy- this picture came up on my FB memories today.

That was him on New Year's Eve last year. Am I a lucky woman or what?

I better go make his supper.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. I do hope the Hens haven't become Cannibals. The Grand-Daughter has Tropical Fish and they for sure are, so I bought a lot of Greenery for the Fry to hide in 'til they get too big to be eaten... Nature can be harsh. Happy New Year.

    1. Yes. Fish will eat their young. Some species, anyway. Weird. But true.

  3. I used to keep parakeets who loved hard-boiled egg yolk. I did wonder about cannibalism.

But that was nothing the savagery in the fish tank I set up because fish came home at the end of the school year with my little boy. Dear little baby mollies being gobbled up as soon as big enough to be tasty. I revised my notion of fish tanks as relaxing. Not when you observe what's going on in that hellscape!

The only shoe I can wear all day is from Landsend, and I pray they never stop selling them. I buy by mail, so easy, so reliable, great relief after years of unsuccessful in person shopping.

    1. You might as well order as many pairs of those shoes as you think will last you forever. I swear. I wish I'd done that with a few things.
      It's a jungle underwater!

  4. I love danskos. I have a brown pair and a black pair I pretty much wear exclusively for work. They are definitely worth the big bucks. Your talking about the long legs cracked me up, but I understand!

    1. Hell yes on the shorts! Those cheerleaders and dancers leave nothing to the imagination. We who appreciate the male form deserve a little love, too.
I know that a lot of people who are on their feet all day wear Danskos. I hope I love mine too.

  5. I love those shoes. I am bringing my latest pair to a cobbler in January in hopes he/she can fix the broken strap because they are purple and comfortable as hell.

What is it about long-legged men? Rob's legs are as tall as I am (almost). Maybe I can convince him to wear some of his old high school basketball shorts around the house (doubtful).

    1. This particular Dansko style also comes in red. I was tempted...
Yeah. I don't think Mr. Moon has any of the shorts left from his basketball career which is sad.

  7. So the question is, which came first? The chicken or the egg? In this case I guess it was the chicken:)

I'm not a fan of what basketball players wear these days either, so baggy.

Glad you got your shoes. I had to look them up and then a realized that a lot of nurses wear them, the clogs for work.

The chicken I made yesterday was a hit. I'm going to miss that doc.

    1. I really ordered those shoes because they look so much like my beloved Anna clogs did. And those are no longer available.
Nurses and servers wear Danskos a lot. My daughter wears them all the time.
I made some good chicken last night myself. I think we'll have it again tonight.

  8. I hadn't finished reading your title before I was laughing. Thank you for that. As for the chickens, I had no idea they would eat their own eggs.

Sigh, I know the difficulty of deciding what is for dinner each evening. Once upon a time, I asked my kids to tell me what they wanted. A week of chicken nuggets took care of that exercise. I've been known to open the freezer, stick in a hand and wave it around. Whatever it lands on I make. Then there are the wee bits of leftovers. I am the human garburator around here as my son rarely eats them. First world problem, right?

    Enjoy the basketball game!

    1. Isn't it gratifying to use up all of the leftovers? I had some baby kale salad that was going south and used it in my chicken recipe last night. It was so good!
Whenever I ask my husband what he wants for supper he always has the same two suggestions- clam spaghetti and chili.
So if I'm desperate, I don't even ask. I just make one or the other.

  9. Well, I just checked and I guess I'll be having beans and rice as I don't have black-eyed peas or corn bread makings. I also have no eggs or cannibalistic chickens...Enjoy the game and I wish you peaceful sleep.

    1. I figure any beans will do the trick. I mean- it's all superstition and tradition.

  11. Going to a basketball game with Mr. Moon sounds fun, and I do wish I could spend New Year's Day with you. I bet your meal is fantastic. I got a wild hair today and bought a whole roast beef. I'm going to make it tomorrow night with Yorkshire pudding.

    1. Well, black eyed peas are okay but not gourmet. I'm sure that roast will be amazing. Are you making the giant Yorkshire pudding that the NYT's cooking just posted a recipe for?

  12. Yes, your husband is handsome for sure.

What size Danskos do you wear? 38's? If you wear 38's you just might be in luck. As you know, Maya has a connection and I have a surplus of Danskos. So tell me, what's your size darlin'

    1. Oh sweetie! Thank you. I actually ordered a 39 this time. That was the size of my old Anna clogs. But I've ordered these and so the die is cast.
      You are PRECIOUS!

  13. What is UP with those chickens? That's so weird! I think animals generally know what they're doing, though -- there must be a reason those eggs have been deemed unacceptable, and they're not going to waste all that protein.

Have fun at the basketball game. I hate basketball, but like you, I'd be more interested if the guys wore the short shorts. LOL

    1. Nah, it's a common, unfortunate chicken habit. Hard to stop once they get the taste for it. And they're not babies, eggs are food for embryonic chicks, after all.

    2. Steve- Yep. Give us something to look at! Although the arms can be lovely too.
Jo- I know. I'm worried about that. And yes, eggs are not babies. Nor are embryos!

  14. Hi Mrs moon
May I wish you and your family a healthy and happy New year.
Thank you for your blog. I enjoy it immensely and read every day even if I don't comment.

A thought just occurred to me. What if a certain presidents mother had ate him? Could have saved a whole heap of trouble!

Oh. If only Trump's mother had eaten her young. I wish, I wish, I wish.

  15. Are the nest boxes too crowded. Sometimes making the boxes more private helps. Unfortunately sometimes the only solution is chicken pie. Dont let any other chickens see this behaviour as they will join in. Not very helpful I know bad habits are hard to cure.

    1. Nope. The next boxes are fine. This egg wasn't even IN the hen house. And I can't slaughter those hens. They are two of my oldest. I need to just check for eggs more frequently, I guess.

  16. Ah, Danskos. Only shoes that work for me. If only figuring out something for dinner was so easy.

Must say that online shipping options really gets me. Not being a Prime (primal?) person, I have to be careful to review the shipping options when purchasing an item on the big A (that I can't seem to find anywhere else in the universe). What got me the other day was that among the shipping options for an item was the choice of paying $7.95 to get it by January 8th. Or choosing the Free Shipping option and getting it on January 7th. What?? Helps to read the fine print when selecting your option.
