Sweet As Honey

Today has been a day of just gettin' 'er done around here for me. Cleaning the hen house, doing laundry, sweeping floors, picking up a few limbs and branches and hauling them to the burn pile, taking trash, stuff like that.
When I stopped by the post office after I dropped off the garbage, I noticed that the four or five Chinese Holly bushes by the parking area were absolutely abuzz with bees. There's one in the picture above. I mean, they were going crazy over that holly and I could barely see the blooms they were so enamored of. But they surely could.
I've been fairly cheerful all day long, so grateful for a day at home to do things that have needed doing although of course I will never, ever get all the things done.
Not in this lifetime.
But as I often say, although I am not a great housekeeper by any means, there is a level of tidiness and visible floor detritus at which I feel comfortable and if it slips below that very, very low bar, it bothers me greatly. So it's nice to have everything at least a little neater, a little less gritty when I walk across the floor. The bed is made up of clean sheets, the martini glasses are in the freezer, and my husband is happy because I also made this.

Strawberry ice cream. And when I tell you that it is actually much pinker and prettier than the picture shows, believe me. He came into the kitchen while I was scraping the churn to get all of the ice cream off of it and a bit dropped onto the counter. "That's mine!" he said and as he dove for a spoon in the drawer right in front of me, he said, "Don't let me hurt you!" Not in a mean way but in a serious way that showed genuine concern for my safety. We both laughed.
He's made me laugh several times today and I have made him laugh as well. Those are the best days, aren't they?

This is short because our supper is way behind schedule and that, too, is a story but one I needn't share.
Oh, some days life is good and the older I get, the sweeter and more precious those are to me. I want to savor them. Since I started writing this, the temperature has dropped at least five degrees and the rain which has been held at bay all day long, is finally falling in big noisy drops with thunder off in the distance.
More sweetness.

Happy Friday, y'all.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. We were supposed to have people over for supper but they had to cancel so my toilets are clean and the house is clean for nothing. And I don't have to make supper now because Friday is free for all Friday. I only cook for myself on Fridays.

A sweet day is a lovely thing. And your honey has ice cream to boot. It looks wonderful!

  2. nothing better than a day at home to catch up, ice cream ready.....and cold glasses for a martini on the porch with rain falling gently (I hope) while dinner is simmering. Happy Friday!

    1. Martinis enjoyed, rain coming down, clean sheets to look forward to...could it be better? I think not.

  4. Actually, it sounds pretty perfect around there. Rain on a tin roof, homemade ice cream, clean sheets, clean floors, martinis....

  5. That icecream looks so delicious I almost licked my screen! I have a level of cleanish that I'm comfortable with too. I get out the vacuum or broom if I can actually see dust bunnies that have rolled out from under things because there is no more room for them there.

    1. Ha! That's a pretty good standard! I'll have to remember that.

  6. Is there anything better than homemade strawberry ice cream? I'm not sure I could list much... homemade jam perhaps but even then...
Your phrase ...'level of tidiness and visible floor detritus at which I feel comfortable' made me smile.

    1. Strawberry ice cream is pretty darn good, isn't it? You're right about homemade jam, too. Our mulberries are ripening up and I'm thinking about making more preserves of them this year. They were so good last year.
We all have our comfort zone, don't we?

  7. I would have written 'a level of untidiness'. I did finally sweep the living room. Chilly yesterday and cold again last night but clear blue skies ahead.

  10. I was just reading about some violent storms in the panhandle -- I hope they steered their way around you! The ice cream looks yummy.

    1. The storm we got was a little loud and boomy for awhile but it wasn't scary at all.
The ice cream was very good.
