Sunday Of Watery Miracles
We finally did get some rain yesterday. It started about five, pretty gentle, and continued for about half an hour. Not so much but still- a reminder that it can rain and it was like a miracle and I walked through it and received that blessing upon me.
The difference in the air this morning is profound. At the very least, the dust has been settled a bit and so the air is clearer. It is cooler. There is less a sense of weariness. The neighborhood chickens have been stunned, it seems, and the roosters next door and Elvis have just begun trading their morning calls. I went and peeked in the hen house and all of the chickens were just standing on the roost, looking at me like, Really? What was that stuff falling from the sky yesterday? Are we to expect more of it today? And the fox- huh- what about the fox?
Poor chooks, as Nigel calls them. Life is hard for a chicken.
We've already had our breakfast, Mr. Moon and I. I scrambled eggs, so yellow and golden that they make store eggs look pathetic. I toasted bread and cooked bacon and Mr. Moon peeled and sliced a perfect tomato. The kids are coming out and we're going to take the boat to the river. It's been a long time since we've done that and we're so excited to show Owen that boats are meant to be on the water. Just sitting in it in the garage makes him so happy that we're expecting him to explode with joy to ride in it on the river.
Oh my.
It's a nice day. It rained. We're going to the river. We'll anchor and go swimming. It'll be cold enough to take your breath and we'll gladly give it because we'll get it back.
Jessie has just called and is talking to her daddy. I've got the camera batteries charging and I need to go find a bathing suit, pack some towels, the sun screen, a bag of tortilla chips left over from last week. This is not a serious boat trip, it is simply, as Ratty from Wind In The Willows would say, "messing about."
If there is any miracle more profound than the gift of water I do not know what it is. It is delivered in the form of rivers and springs and lakes and ponds and pools and from the sky. I never, ever take it for granted when I turn on the tap.
Holy, holy, holy.
The grandson is here.
And thus this day of miracles proceeds and we shall ride on the river of holy waters in North Florida on a beautiful Sunday in which we have had rain.

your garden is a magical place. and you in it.
ReplyDeletehappy sunday, dear friend.
What an absolutely fantastic day. My heart bursts when I think of all the G'ma and G'pa experiences for Owen. I'm laughing about how the boy actually goes in the water and not in the garage.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I'm out of store bought eggs but I am making this one week here the only week in history I will not go to the grocery store.
omg I meant the BOAT goes in the water.
ReplyDeleteWell, OK, I am sure that when he is ready the BOY will go in the water too.
It's just like Dune!
ReplyDeleteLove the garden picture, love the mental picture of Owen and the happy family in the boat on the water! Can't wait to see the pictures. Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to the see the photos of the river trip -- it sounds like a perfect Sunday.
ReplyDeleteFantastic plan for the day.
ReplyDeleteAND you quoted Ratty.
Happy Sunday.

Looking forward to the photos :)
ReplyDeleteWater. Yes.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, I can't wait to see Owen splashing in the river water!
ReplyDeleteWe had rain as well today, and it's even a bit chilly here now. I still can't imagine your climate. It must be hard to live in with your bodies made for northern European summers instead.
ReplyDeleteAngella- It's been a good year for the garden. As long as we keep watering and weeding...
ReplyDeleteMichele R- The boat AND the boy went in the water. And so sad to have to buy eggs.
silverfinofhope- You know, I never could like that book. I don't even remember what it's about. A dry place?
Mel- It was pretty great. Pictures are up!
Elizabeth- Pretty darn perfect.
Lisa- Ratty is one of our favorite people.
Mrs. A- That sounds pretty fine too.
Jo- I hope you like them.
A- Yes, yes, YES!
Rebecca- Sadly, the splashing was too soon over to grab the camera.
Mwa- Believe me, I can tolerate heat a lot better than cold. Isn't that odd?

I am glad that you had a good time. Good for you to get out there on the water.
ReplyDeleteBreakfast..yum. And I know the color of those eggs. Store bought fall flat on color and taste. I am glad we can have our hens and we do enjoy sharing our bountiful supply of eggs with family and friends!
ReplyDeleteI bet the coolness of that water will feel heavenly!
Wow, I'm glad you said that about turning on the tap. I got home late and had to water everything just before dark, the skeeters were biting me and I was tired and annoyed, but when I turned on the outside faucet and watched it torrent into the huge watering can I took a deep breath and felt the miracle of it. I felt awe and gratitude. Water just there for us, waiting underground.
ReplyDeleteYour ability to put yourself into your chickens' heads is truly heartwarming...
