Rachel's Birthday And A Stubborn Man

I spent most of the day working on Levon's quilt and I'm getting there. I'm now working on the last panel where I've sewn his name and am in the process of embroidering around the edges of the letters I cut out.

I definitely did not think through things when I started the whole project, having the fabric run sideways instead of up and down because the letters of Levon's name go up and down.
Oh well.
I used to sew the last panel on before I embroidered the letters but at some point I thought, "Wait. Why am I doing this?" It is so much easier to do needlework on a small piece of material than a whole dang blanket. It only took me about thirty years or so to figure this out. I am not the fastest car on the road, am I?

Before I got to the blanket project though, I did a few other things. Mr. Moon and I went out to the garden to decide where he should plant those tomatoes I got the other day. I pulled up one whole row of lettuce to make room because it's baby bonsai lettuce, I guess, and never got bigger than a small saucer per head. So I washed all the plants I pulled and I think they will make a shrimp salad for us tomorrow.
My heartier greens are still looking excellent, sturdy and large and colorful. I suspect that here in North Florida our collard greens are just more likely to be happy than things like Bibb lettuce. So is kale and arugula and mustard greens and these purple cabbages. I've never had cabbages grow this beautifully. I hope they head up before the damn worms get to them.

Another thing I did before I started sewing was to try and figure out how to get my Hulu back and y'all- there is nothing in this world that makes me feel older than attempting to do things like that on the TeeVee with the clicker. (That was old-people talk for TV and remote.) I went through the whole process of changing the account to my name and my card thinking maybe that would help (and frankly, I thought it already was), filled out all the boxes with email and form of payment and zip code and all that shit, clicked "Done", and got this.

FUCK THAT!

And now Hulu is associated with Disney and so am I supposed to use that password and oh god, I just cannot do this.

So I gave up on it all and will get one of my kids to come and help me.

Today is Rachel's birthday and we have all texted her and wished her the happiest of days. Hank was able to take the rest of the week off and this morning they drove up to Thomasville to get some bagels at Rachel's favorite bagel place.

It's a little hard to tell but I think she's happy.
Tomorrow those of us who can are going to meet up at Kool Beanz, possibly the best restaurant in the south Georgia, north Florida area, and then go to a thrift store. I am looking forward to that. It is a joy to celebrate Rachel who has brought so much love and goodness to our family. It makes my heart happy, knowing that she and Hank have each other to love and go through life with, sustaining each other and making each other laugh because I know they do.
Rachel is a beautiful person, inside and out and the day Hank met her, was a day that changed all of our lives in so many sweet and positive ways.

Mr. Moon spent a good part of the day on the roof, blowing leaves off. I knew he was doing this and I didn't even go outside to observe because I would have pleaded with him to get off the roof and then I would have cried and he would have said, "Don't worry. I'm fine," and I would have cried some more and gotten mad because he's so stubborn but he didn't fall off, 911 did not have to be called, and I only cried a little bit.
You can't tell that man anything.
Well, you can tell him but he won't listen unless he agrees with what you're saying. I will not deny that his stubbornness is one of the main reasons he has done so very well in life but there comes a time...
But let's hear it for stubborn among us and those who love them. Mostly though, let's hear it for Rachel.
Happy birthday, woman! We love you! See you tomorrow!

Ms. Moon

  1. Nice to see that Levon's quilt is nearing completion and birthday congratulations to Rachel. How old is she?... or is that a rude question?

    1. Yes. I realized that a long time ago and it struck me as how very true it is.

  4. Happy birthday to Rachel! My boys are still teenagers but I imagine it soothes a mama's heart to know her children are well loved by their partner. I have a black black thumb, but I believe home garden grown arugula is one of life's great gifts! ;)

    1. I'll be planting more arugula this week! I'm going to see if I can keep rotating crops of it all summer.
It is a wonderful feeling to know that your child is with a good and loving partner.

  5. Happy day to Rachel and good progress on Levon's blanky.

  6. I think all mamas want their babies to find happiness without kissing a lot of frogs but how many are lucky that way?
And as for technology I say phooey. And I worked on computers for 25 years. But often I have to call my daughter for help and I'm just grateful she's closeby. And I love that quilt.

    1. I feel like we have come so far as a generation as applies to technology but some of it just seems STUPID! Thank goodness for smart kids who will help.

  7. Happy birthday to Rachel!
We went to IHOP for supper tonight and it sucked. I assume their eggs come in liquid form, or powder, not sure, but they sure are rubbery. Pancakes undercooked and grandson wild, tired, and hungry. He cried before bed because Fortnite doesn't have real actors and he wants real actors. He's probably asleep already.
I have a hydroponic garden thingy, small, but I dug it out of the basement and started some romaine lettuce in it. It'll be cheaper than the grocery store.

    1. Kids can be SO ridiculous in their expressed needs and wants when they're exhausted. And they cannot be talked out of them.
I went to a camp once that served powdered eggs and god, did they suck.
      Good luck with your lettuce!

  8. Levon's blanket looks superb. Nice job Mary!
Like you, I often have a hard time setting things up or restoring things on the TV. Why do things work for an age and then suddenly no longer work?
    Enjoy your day, Rachel.
Mr. Moon, like many men, throw caution to the wind. The leaf removal was successful and even better no harm was done. A few tears, but that's it.

    1. That's what happened with my Hulu! Just...one day it worked, the next day it did not.
Men tend to think they can do anything. I suppose that evolutionarily, this is a good thing. In modern day life? Not so much.

  9. The lettering on the blanket is excellent, such a perfect color on that background. Levon will have that blanket before college yet. And happy birthday to Rachel, your son’s WIFE. Are you used to that yet?

    1. No, I am NOT used to that yet. I told a friend at Publix that I'd just been to a lunch with the family to celebrate Hank's wife's birthday. And it did amaze me.

  10. Happy Birthday Rachel! I've never heard of baby bonsai lettuce but it sounds the perfect size for me. I hope Mr Moon was wearing non-skid bots at least. Levon's blanket is beautiful.

    1. Oh, I just called it baby bonsai lettuce because it has hardly grown at all. Tiny plants.
Glen probably was wearing non-skid shoes. I hope so.

  11. Every time I get a new piece of technology I have an "oh shit, here's another instruction manual to read" moment and being in the EU they are usually written in about 20 languages (so I cut out all the "useless" pages with a razor). The manuals seem to pile up and I want to scream but of course it eventually gets done doesn't it!!! I love your quilt btw (I HAVE to make one for my grandkids). Oh and happy birthday to Rachel. Yeah, she looks a bit miserable in that photo!

    1. Oh, our manuals are written in many languages too! We all have that drawer with appliance information in it, don't we?
Kids really do seem to like having a blanket with their name on it.

  12. I once kept a new computer in a box for months because setting it up would require learning new technology. Stupid, I know. Happy birthday to Rachel.

    1. I understand, Debby. I truly do. I have always found Apple products to be quite easy to figure out. They don't even really come with manuals. Just steps, 1, 2, 3, and so forth.

  13. Sending birthday hugs and warm wishes to Rachel! I know someone stubborn, too. I won’t name names... but I’ve lived with him for 43 years and sometimes I want to push him off the roof... onto a nice bouncy mattress, of course.

  14. My very tech savy son gave Hulu a 0 rating when trying to cancel my account on-line and they asked for feedback. Not user friendly at all.

    1. Sometimes, it really is NOT us, it is the product and whoever designed it and a lack of decent instructions.

  17. The letters on the blanket are VERY nice and neat.
The man in my house regularly climbs up on the roof which is a bit higher up than yours and I usually feel like I will die and call him names and recently, the neighbours have come out to watch him and my spectacle of a concerned wife and everybody thinks he's a hero and I am a whimp. The man will be 73 this summer, he could ask several nice young people to do it instead - they did offer. But a man got to do what his stubborn head tells him.

    1. I use stencils for those letters. I used to free-form cut my own but I suck at that.
Glen is not only 70, but he has a neurological situation going on that affects his balance and ability to feel where his feet and legs are and shouldn't even be climbing a ladder. And yet- he does it.

  18. I was looking at the edges of those letters. Are they turned under and what a feat that would be or are they felt or fleece? Like Sabine said, very nice and neat. I can't say anything about Mr Moon's stubbornness since I'm probably that stubborn as well. Fortunately I have two grandchildren that get up on the roof to take care of the leaves. Hulu has a lot of good shows. Most recently Paradise.

    1. No, they're not turned under. They're made of flannel and I just sewed them as close to the edges as possible and now am doing a blanket stitch around them which makes them look better. Theoretically, of course.
      Hulu does have good shows!
And hell yes- you are a stubborn woman! I sure wouldn't try to tell you what to do.

  19. I wish Rachel many happy returns of the day!

  20. Happy (belated) birthday to Rachel! I think Levon's blanket has turned out great, regardless of the sideways lettering. Stubbornness can be frustrating in a spouse but as you said, it can also be part of someone's secret to success. Dave is somewhat stubborn but he is not likely to climb up on a roof.
