There are places on the bottom of the machine that should be oiled too, as illustrated on a different page and I make sure to get to them.
But as far as I can remember, never have I filled the grease tubes with the lubricant although maybe I have because there is a tube of lubricant in my sewing machine case and it is definitely not over twenty years old.
Probably.
I did all of this in preparation for getting restarted on Levon's name blanket which is the project I talked about before Mr. Moon left, saying I needed to work on it.
And boy, do I. At the rate I've been progressing on it, by the time I give it to him he'll say, "Wow. Thanks." And then he's going to get the keys out of his pocket and drive off, forgetting to take the blanket with the cartoon bears with him.
Have I already said this?
Oh well. It's true.
But again, this morning, I was feeling so very, very down and horrible about myself that like yesterday, I knew I needed to get to work on something that I have been putting off doing. Not that calling and making those appointments yesterday really improved my outlook on life in general, or myself in particular, but there is no getting around it- I need to finish this blanket.

I finally got smart today and cleaned off my back porch table which is large enough to spread the quilt out on to pin the pieces I need to pin to it. Getting down on the floor to do that is next to impossible. And then I needed to clear the sewing area in the dining room and put the jigsaw puzzle away and then oil the machine and lube up the old grease tubes and set up the ironing board and run a bobbin and and by the time I'd done all of that, it was already early afternoon. But I got some progress made and that does feel good.
My sewing machine feels like one of my very oldest friends.
Here's what the blanket looked like a few steps ago:
Vastly imperfect but very soft. After I finish up with all the different layers, I will cut out the letters of Levon's name and sew them on to the last panel and then embroider around the edges of them before I sew the panel to the blanket.
And I imagine this is the last name blanket I will ever make.
So that's all I've done today. I set Ralph the Roomba to vacuuming and he has been busy all day. Perversely, this makes me feel as if I am accomplishing some vacuuming which I most definitely am not but if it gets done, who cares?
I've talked to Mr. Moon. I do believe he is quite ready to come home. He's had a lot of enforced relaxation on this trip and the man is not good at that. He'll be home tomorrow afternoon. He said that he saw the gator again last night. I did not realize that he'd taken the picture of it from his balcony. He said the gator was just hanging out in the water until he opened his balcony's sliding glass doors at which point the creature perked right up and made his way to the bank, looking up expectedly, which means that asshole tourists have been feeding it. And this is how alligators become dangerous to humans and their pets. They lose their natural fear of them, their desire to keep their distance, and expect something tasty to eat when they see one. And then when one does attack a person or eat a dog, they have to catch it and euthanize it because it has become a "nuisance animal".

God, but humans are stupid. They completely ignore the "Please don't feed the wildlife" signs and toss the gators (or bears or raccoons or crocodiles) leftover Kentucky fried chicken or Hostess Twinkies or whatever nastiness they have available and make sure their wives are watching and getting it all on film and feeling like they're Crocodile Dundee or something.
It's the ubiquitous "Hey y'all, lookit this!" and people actually die because of this behavior and so do the animals.

Speaking of how humans are assholes.
Anyone want to explain to me WHY in the world Trump thinks that starting a trade war with our closest allies is a good idea? The stock market is tanking, global economists are horrified, and somehow the orange intestine does not understand how tariffs work nor can any of his so-called advisors appear to be able to explain it to him.

Meanwhile, our new Director of Health and Human Services is suggesting cod liver oil as a treatment for measles and is shipping doses of vitamin A to the county in Texas which seems to be the epicenter of the measles outbreak, as well as helping to arrange ambulance rides.
From the NYT's:
"Texas doctors had seen very, very good results," Mr. Kennedy claimed, by treating measles cases with a steroid, budesonide; an antibiotic called clarithromycin; and cod liver oil which he said had high levels of vitamin A and vitamin D.
Really?
Here's an alternative suggestion- vaccinate children to prevent the need for all that medication, ambulance rides, hospital stays, worry, fear, possible death and the spread of the disease to vulnerable children. Also, isn't vaccination a less expensive way to deal with the measles? I thought that's what this Republican administration was all about.
Okay. I'm done. For tonight at least.
Are you watching the State of the Union? I would, simply to see how the people in the Chamber are reacting but I cannot watch that treasonous pus pocket use his anal mouth to speak, nor can I bear to listen to the words that come out of it.

Gonna go heat up the leftovers.
Love...Ms. Moon
I am not watching it. There is no point. I don't believe him. So there is no point listening to him talk about what he intends to do. I will wait and see what he actually does.
ReplyDeleteDid not watch one second.
DeleteNope ... not watching but will catch the highlights later! I'll be watching the 7 Little Johnstons!
ReplyDelete7 Little Johnstons?
DeleteWouldn't it be fun if he has a massive stroke in front of the world? I won't be watching but someone can tell me about it afterwards.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't.
DeleteI can't listen to that "man" speak. I hate him too much and it would give me a headache. I plan to be asleep by the time he gets going.
ReplyDeleteI love that blanket pattern! So cute.
I don't generally get headaches but I do become enraged. And then depressed.
DeleteNot watching.too bad they don't have alligators in DC.
ReplyDeleteSeriously.
DeleteI listened occasionally on the campaign, to mock his abuse of the language. Now he's devolved to abuse of the country and the people, no more.
ReplyDeleteHe is devolving, isn't he?
DeleteWell done on the machine! I am thoroughly impressed! The blanket is looking GREAT- the lad will love wrapping up in that soft under side, i have some of that fabric and love it so much.
ReplyDeleteNOPE to listening to anus face fart out lies and poop! NOPE!! had enough ! wondering how long it will be before they start rounding us up Babi Yar style !!!
I'm serious- I worry about "them" rounding up the unwanted just as "they" did in Nazi Germany. This is no joke to my mind.
DeleteThe blanket for Levon looks great. Your sewing machine is very similar to the one my grandmother owned. I loved watching my grandmother make me dresses.
ReplyDeleteNo, I also will not watch DT on TV.
Feeding wildlife is a big problem. My neighbor was feeding a 250 lb. black bear and making videos. His house is on 4 acres and mine is on 6.5 acres but in the Fall when the leaves are on the ground, I can see into his yard and one day I saw the bear when my dog tried to run over to investigate the bear. I screamed. My neighbor (Warren) shouted at the bear, and it ran into the woods. Warren then told me he had wonderful videos of the bear climbing the stairs to his porch and balancing on the stair railing. He was elated. I was angry and told him if I see him feeding the bear and making videos again, I will call the police because he is putting himself, me, my dog and other neighbors in great danger.
What's wrong with some people?
You should have called the police anyway. Perhaps they could have sent someone out to talk to the fucking idiot. THIS IS HOW PEOPLE GET KILLED! Or the bear euthanized.
DeleteI can't stomach to watch that vile subhuman. I truly get a visceral reaction that's sickening.
ReplyDeleteThe alligator no doubt has been basically 'trained' to be alert for food from idiotic tourists. Send him to DC. Plenty of good eats there. 5 star alligator dining.
Even Kenney's family said he was a loon. There's blood on his hands.
Paranormal John
I get the same reaction. On top of everything else, he reminds me of my abusing stepfather.
DeleteYou are the second person to suggest alligators in DC.
Did you read the letter that Carolyn Kennedy wrote about RFK, Jr.?
Nope Nope Nope...anything that is important for me to know, Rachel or Ari or Lawrence will fill me in on, later. Or if some "misguided soul" does him in, we will all see it over and over, ad infinitum.
ReplyDeleteThere was no misguided soul. Just an enormous amount of bullshit and bragging and threats. From what I hear.
DeleteI lasted just a few minutes. He’s too gross to waste my time on. I do love your description, though!
ReplyDeleteHe is disgusting.
DeleteNo way can I stomach listening to that little man, so I’ve come here to talk about vaccines. My father was born at his grandfather’s house during the Spanish influenza pandemic as the overcrowded hospital wasn’t taking maternity patients. His youngest brother was left significantly hearing impaired thanks to diphtheria. I was ten when the polio vaccine became available and remember very clearly the fear engendered by summer outbreaks of the disease, a fear intensified by knowing people who had polio. In the early Sixties a friend died of encephalitis caused by measles, and about the same time another friend lost a baby a few hours after birth, a baby with severe birth defects thanks to rubella. Ask me if I believe in vaccines. Margaret
ReplyDeleteAmen. Heaven only knows how many of us could tell these same stories.
DeleteYou’re a mechanical whiz Mary Moon, you and that beautiful machine. And yes, cutting on a table is definitely preferable to cutting on the floor. It’s going to be a cherished name blanket.
ReplyDeleteI am so not a mechanical whiz but the little instruction manual was so well-written that it is easy to follow. Unlike today's instruction manuals.
DeleteHere in Australia kids get vaccinated for measles at age 1 and get a booster shot before starting school at age 5. It's a combined measles/mumps and something else vaccination, possibly whooping cough. They also get vaccinated for every other damn thing out there, unless their parents don't believe in vaxxes.
ReplyDeleteI agree about NOT feeding wild animals, though I did have a couple of years where I bought and threw seeds for the Sulphur Crested Cockatoos here and only stopped because the flock grew from a few birds to almost three dozen and the seed got too expensive. It took a couple of weeks for them to move on to where they would find their natural food on their own again.
It will be nice to have Mr Moon home again and Levon's name blanket is beautiful. My own sewing machine is gathering dust in the corner behind the bedroom door. I should give it away to someone who needs it.
MMR. Measles, mumps, rubella. At least that's how it works here.
DeleteAnd yes, lots of other vaccines.
We do feed the wild birds but somehow, that does not seem the same at all. Very few cardinal attacks on humans.
I was trying out some new programs to stream. Nothing exciting but better than the alternative.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely.
DeleteI did not watch the speech. I read the headlines and that was all I could handle.
ReplyDeleteThe blanket is looking great and I'm sure it will feel good to get it finished! You're so funny, talking about Levon driving off and leaving it behind. :)
Oiling and greasing a sewing machine is far more technical than anything I ever do! LOL
I can actually visualize Levon doing that. He's already such a man and has always been.
DeleteI just follow the instructions and get the job done. I am certain you could do it too.
I still haven’t watched Drumpf’s latest. I try but I just can’t. So, yeah, humans are stupid and assholes. But, thankfully, not all humans. You and yours give me hope. I love that blanket. Great that an older Levin will be able to turn it to the very mature, textured green side. A great color. My mother had a singer built into a beautiful wood cabinet purchased in 1950. Im now sorry I didn’t keep it. When closed it looked like a desk and would have been fun to have here. Ah well. We spent a small fortune shopping things. Cod liver oil, the wonder drug. I hear it makes hair grow on bald heads and is also good for killing brain warms…. Or maybe that’s feeding brain worms. I forget.
ReplyDeleteOh, I bet you do wish you still had that old sewing machine. I have come so close to buying one of those old Singers in a cabinet but never have. Beautiful examples of the technology and furniture style of the time.
DeleteCod liver oil. Didn't people used to give that stuff to their kids daily? Didn't seem to work on measles in the olden days. But yeah, I bet it is good at nourishing brain worms.
Levon's name blanket is coming along nicely and may I say that one cannot help admiring a woman who is able to fill her sewing machine's tubes with motor grease. Apparently, according to your esteemed leader, you are living in a land that is soon going to become the greatest civilisation Earth has ever known... I am so jealous!
ReplyDeleteHAHAHHAHAHA , I will trade places with you ,sir!! PLEASE!
DeleteYes. It is a comfort and a thrill to know that I will be living in such a country- esteemed throughout the world!
DeleteYou know how I really feel about this.
This is a lovely blanket and I am sure your grandson will cherish it no matter his age.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get the measles when my siblings had it and my parents were - wrongfully - convinced that I was of the minute percentage of people who are immune to this virus. When I got it at age 17, I nearly died I was so ill for a very long time. This is not a childhood illness, it can hit people of all ages if they are not vaccinated or had it.
Yes! Measles AND mumps can be deadly to older kids and adults who weren't vaccinated or immune through having those diseases. You are so right.
Delete"nuisance animal" is a good name for the current president. I did not watch but heard he was ranting as usual.
ReplyDeleteThe blanket looks terrific and I am impressed with your technical knowledge of your sewing machine, Mary!
Orange, dangerous nuisance animal.
DeleteI will admit to you that even after all these years of sewing on that machine, I still do not understand the tension regulator.
You have inspired me. I have decided to make name blankets for my two great grandchildren since all my grandkids are grown. Have i bought even one shred of fabric? No. All the preparation you did to work on Levon's blanket would have had me going nope. Not today.
ReplyDeleteAnd no, I did not watch. Like you I cannot tolerate his voice, his face, his anus mouth, his lies, his egomaniacal personality. His America first is only making America irrelevant on the world stage while he sends us into a recession. the economy is already contracting and it's only been 6 weeks.
Well, you know how it is when you sew- once you have it all set up, you're good to go.
DeleteI wonder just how long it's going to be before DT's supporters realize that no, he doesn't give a shit about them and will cut everything they depend on too.
I can’t stand to watch him for even a nanosecond. The constant onslaught of nastiness, and his comment about “good tv” tells you everything you need to know.
ReplyDeleteI love that camping fabric! I got an email from JoAnn that they are closing all their stores which makes me so sad. I love looking at fabric and the only option left will be Walmart.
Xoxo
Barbara
And Walmart does not have good fabric IMO. What a loss it is that we will no longer have any viable alternatives for buying fabrics and all the things we need to sew them as well as craft items.
DeleteI am actually quite happy that a Cyclone is knocking your president off the first story on our news over here!
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty bad when you prefer a cyclone to news about a world leader.
Delete
