Outside Time

What I mostly did today was to weed in the garden and plant the rattlesnake beans. The weather was so beautiful that it would have been a sin to be inside and it is time to get my beans in the ground. I want to can even more jars of them this summer than last because it is so lovely when I just have run out of vegetable ideas to open a jar, pour them into a pan, season them, and heat them up. I often add onions to them and sometimes I even make homemade green bean casserole with them and that is delicious too.

So I cleared that long fence row which took a few hours, believe it or not. I try to get even the tiniest little sprouts of leaves and both of the predominant weeds that grow in that space are once again plants with long runner roots: betony and dollar weed. Mr. Moon needs to get out there and mow on the other side of the fence so that all of my work is not undone in a week or so.

I also planted some more arugula seeds in one of the canvas planting bags we experimented with last year. I so hope they come up and thrive and do not go to seed immediately.

I pulled my row of Chinese cabbage that had become completely flowered out and something else will go in there soon. Perhaps bush cucumbers which I've never tried before. We have had lousy luck with cucumbers here which is such a disappointment. Who doesn't love cucumbers and who doesn't love pickles made from them? Dill or sweet, they are both delicious. Glen's planted at least eight tomatoes and four peppers. I also have more tomatoes sprouting but by the time they're ready to into the ground, it will probably be so late that the heat and bugs will destroy them or at least keep them from thriving and producing in any sort of quantity.

My little babies.

I watered the porch plants and got all of the rest of the plants that were inside back outside. I really don't think it's going to freeze here again this year. I have plants to repot and that always reminds me of the hermit crab shell-swaps. I take one plant and put it in a bigger pot and then another plant from a small pot goes into the one I just took the other plant out of and so on and so forth down the line. It's never just ONE plant. Two of my most beloved plants on the front porch are not looking good. I had hoped that the damage the freezes had done on them, although severe was not deadly but I am seeing no signs of new growth on either of them. But it is not time to give up on them yet. Not at all. it could take months. I need to wash and dry all of the old sheets and blankets I used as covers for the plants during the cold weather and put them away.

I am not going to lie to you- today was a bit difficult for me. The offer on the house was accepted and so the purchase of it is even more real now. There is first the all-important inspection. I really can't see that anything major is going to come up. We know the roof is going to need replacing before too long and have already discussed replacing it with a green metal roof. I think that would be nice although yes, it would resemble a Lincoln Log house but who hasn't wanted a Lincoln Log Cabin?

So yeah, it's not metal but use your imagination.

Damn. I buried the lede, I think! I already got my mammogram results back and I appear to be cancer free in the bosomular area. The report also noted that it can be harder to detect cancer in breasts with dense tissue but I don't have dense tissue.
Okay. Good to know.

So that is done for now.

I checked for any sprouting bamboo this morning but haven't seen any yet. This does not mean it's not there. There are many other signs of new growth though. The bridal leaf spirea is covered in tiny white still-closed buds and the tea olive is losing its mind with joy. I have some bromeliads in the front yard that used to be planted in a tree stump which over the years has collapsed but the bromeliads are still alive and doing okay. Today I saw this.

Now wouldn't you have just sworn that plant was dead? Guess it's not. And see those blurry green plants up there in approximately the 11:00 position? Those are baby spider plants which have grown from a mama that I nestled in the old tree stump some years ago. So now we know- spider plants are not doomed if they are frozen or even snowed on.

And here is miniature bouquet I've made from the tiniest of wildflowers in the yard.

This time change has gotten me so confused. I just now realized what time it is and I really have to go make supper.

I have not discussed the crumbling of our country, our rights, our freedoms, our constitution, and our economy in a day or two but trust me when I say that I am paying attention and every day it seems that things have sunk to a new level of horror.

Deep breath.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. So nice to see spring coming somewhere. It's only the second week of March, but we will go to the seventies this week. Not right. Then another polar vortex next week. Strange weather.

    1. Yes. I think he is thrilled but he's being quiet about it, knowing I'm not quite there yet.

  3. Your bouquet is beautiful. Congratulations on your new house?
Almost all of our snow has melted and the ice, which is even nicer, but this week is supposed to be cold again, with snow. Oh well.
I'm sick and feel like crap, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

    1. Oh no! Did you pick something else up from Jack or just some rando?
Yes. I think it will be our new house. Our other house. Our old new house. Our log cabin!

  4. I’m envious of your gorgeous weather. We’re still buried in snow. Some day spring will come.
Congrats on the new home! Your family will be thrilled, i’m sure. And, they can help with filling it with everything that fills your heart with joy. Exciting times in the midst of lunacy. It will be a great distraction.

    1. I told Lily today to keep her eyes out of FB Marketplace and so forth. We are going to need everything.
      Our weather has been enviable.

  5. I love the tiny bouquets. This was a good day outside. You sound a bit dubious about the house. It seems to have happened quickly.

    1. Yes. Both. Happening quickly and dubious BUT, Mr. Moon deserves this and he has spent years looking for a place that ticks off all the boxes and I think this one has.

  6. Your tiny bouquet is beautiful and the colours remind me of the identical twin grand daughters who often wear pink and purple, so we'd know which was which, Gen-purple, Ana-pink, until last year their brothers would identify them as the pink one or the purple one, but now they can say their names so it's easier.
I'm excited about the house and looking forward to reading about what you do with it, changes made, colours chosen etc.
I think I am so fixated on houses because I no longer have one, I'm in a tiny one bedroom flat with a miniscule kitchen, 8ft x 6ft with much of that space taken up with bench cabinets and sink with cupboard under and drawers.

    1. Oh my gosh! Is it that hard to tell them apart? Even for family?
That is not much living space, is it? It really isn't fair that we can have two houses, both of good size, and others cannot have but one small flat. I'm sorry, River.

    2. Yes, the girls are completely identical. Their mum always knew which was which, but the rest of us had to ask. Things will be interesting for the teachers when they get to school age.
I'm used to the small flat now, but still yearn for a "real" house.

  7. I love that tiny bouquet. I'm also paying attention to the national events. Stock market dropped again, but also Ukraine's funding and intelligence got restored. That was a positive, and I believe it is because there was dissention on it in the MAGA ranks. His approval ratings are still dropping. Fox News even got pointed about the stock market. We have to see hope in all of this...otherwise it's just...hopeless.

    1. You are right. And I don't WANT to feel hopeless. I want to feel as if someone can do what must be done to stop this destruction of our government, economy, way of life. I always heard America's constitution was so great because of its checks and balances. WHERE ARE OUR CHECKS AND BALANCES?
And honestly, I don't think Trump gives a rat's ass what his ratings are. He's too deep into it to care.

    2. Oh, I don't think it means squat to him...but what it means to me is that eyes are opening.

    3. Doesn’t give a rat’s ass because he just lies about polls, crowd sizes, etc. But he does care; he’s the poster boy for the insecure. If he weren’t wreaking so much havoc, I’d almost feel sorry for him, as stunted and damaged as he is. Margaret

  8. Marymoon, Marymoon, how does your garden grow? I hope it’s fills your kitchen with lots of freshness this year. The miniature bouquet is charming. I love the idea of a Lincoln Log house. Hope you soon get used to the idea and get excited about having a new second home. Mr. Moon needs another project, doesn’t he?

    1. Right now my garden is growing well, thank you. I full expect those green beans to have pushed through the earth by Monday. Those things are like Jack and the BEAN stalk beans. And I am so easily thrilled with things like that.
Mr. Moon very much does need a second project. Especially one that will involve a boat, fishing gear, and bait.

  9. Deep breathing definitely required daily now. Congrats on the offer being accepted, will this be your Vacay Home and you will keep your lovely Historic Home? It would be difficult to give that place up I'd think, even if the Cabin is idyllic too. My Tomatoes have done well year after year, but I've never grown Cucumber either, I did okay with Lettuces and Herbs. I definitely could never be a Farmer tho', I don't know when I should plant anything so it almost has to plant itself from stray Seed and just make a go of it without my help.

    1. Yes. We are keeping this house. I am NOT moving to Lake Seminole into a neighborhood which is probably twenty miles to the nearest grocery store.
Have you ever thought about checking online charts about when to plant various seeds in your geographical area? I'm sure you have.

  10. Glad you got good results from the mammogram. What a relief!
I love that tiny bouquet. Today is my daughter's birthday (my youngest child is 36)! My surprise daughter after birthing 4 boys. My Maggie has always been a treat for me and so I can smile today.

  11. Basically what I've been doing in my yard. Gorgeous weather.
Things are just getting more horrid by the day.
Well, yay, on the house? It'll keep Mr Moon busy.

    1. Things are indeed getting more horrible by the day. Obviously Project 2025 was more than just an idea put down on paper. It was planned and set to execute as soon as the swearing in was complete.
Yes. I think this house will keep Glen busy.

  12. It seems the gardening season is in full swing in FL. You've accomplished a lot in the garden. Planting veggie plants generally can't happen before May 15 in MA. We can still get night freezes.
Congratulations on the new house. There are lots of possibilities for customization. The green roof idea really does look like Lincoln logs. Will you go Lincoln logs or nautical...or maybe both?

    1. By May 15 we sometimes have tomatoes. But then the heat kills them. Still, we try every year.
Nautical? Oh. I get it. Because it's a house on the water. I think it will probably be Fish Camp decor. And hunting camp. Fun, right?

  13. As you enter spring we enter Autumn here - it looks like you have a similar climate to ours (although we NEVER have snow and I am on the coast so I don't even get frost). I could never grow Chinese cabbage without bolting, but Pak Choi is very much a favourite here. I am very glad you got a nothing to see here on the boobs.

    1. I need to grow Boc Choy as we call it over here. We don't usually get snow either. This year's snow was a complete surprise and anomaly. Record breaking. But we do get a few freezes every winter.

  14. I would never have guessed that a spider plant could survive a freeze! Which of your porch plants aren't bouncing back as well as you'd hoped? I think you're right that they might just need more time.

I like the idea of the green roof on the log house. I wonder if you thought of doing that BECAUSE of the Lincoln logs?!

    1. My banyan plants look to be either dead or very, very determinedly sleeping. Same with a prayer plant but I think it will come back. I was quite shocked that none of the birds' nest ferns look like they went through anything and the ponytail palm just got nipped on the very top.
Glen had already thought he'd like a green metal roof before I even saw the house. Honey, he's picking out flooring already.

  15. You have a new house! Congrats! Let the projects begin. A roof too? Yeah, it’s going to take a while. Good news on the mammogram front. How do the kids feel about the house?
