My brother just sent me the following in an e-mail and he is probably right and I'm sorry I criticized such an honorable old dude.

Mostly he was just damn cranky.
But obviously there was far more to Andy than I truly realized.
So. Correction noted.
Wow Mary, you were too tough on Rooney in my opinion. Why so hard on a guy who also quit his CBS job 41 years ago because they wouldn't let him give his anti Vietnam commentary on air......or reported on Allied atrocities against German civilians......or was arrested for refusing to take a Black's place on a bus ......anyway, more important than any of that was his steadiness in an unsteady world ....and he was occasionally very funny
What made Andy Rooney happy? He explained this in his last commentary - he was paid to write for a living. I wish I could get paid to do what he did. He just didn't express his happiness very well.

ReplyDeleteYou could have always directed his attention to your by line at the top of the pretty picture announcing that you "don't know shit" and plea the 5th! :-)

I found him grouchy and not very funny. He was like the old man next door who didn't like children playing because they were having fun. I won't miss him. But I appreciate the things that he did do when he actually reported. That is pretty awesome.
ReplyDeleteI used to NOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME understand why my dad liked Andy Rooney so damn much. I thought he was a boring and crabby old fuck. And then I got to middle age, and I suddenly got it.
