Big Day For The Grands

First things first! And that would be- first day back to school for the kiddos. And of course, Owen is first in that particular list. Our baby boy. I'm sure he's thrilled to be going back to school. You can see it on his face, right?
Right?

Next up, Gibson Monroe.

That sweet handsome boy! Lily says he's a little anxious about starting middle school. I get that. Middle school can be hard for so many reasons.

I could not love Maggie's outfit more. She is ready to kick ass and take names in the second grade. While wearing tulle.

On to the Weatherford babes.

Here they are! And of course, Vergil's a babe too. Walking to school. They go to the same elementary school that my kids went to. I can remember wearing Jessie on a sling as I walked her sister Lily to that  school. There is a sense of rightness about this to me. I love that Levon is wearing a hand-me-down shirt from August and that August is wearing his pink shirt, pink flip-flops, and pink backpack. Honestly, I do not think that it even registers to August that most boys don't wear a lot of pink. It's his favorite color. Therefore- he shall wear it. Jessie has asked him if anyone ever tells him that boys shouldn't wear pink and he says, "Not really!" She told us that this morning Levon looked at August and said, "You look great, August! Like a girl!" And Jessie said, "He does look great. He looks like August!"

Here's the one that melts my heart.

Walking through those front doors,  August with his arm on Levon's back. He is such a good big brother. All will be well on the first day of kindergarten.

So that is that report.

I had a fairly unusual day for me. Well, mostly.
I met Lily and Lauren and Jessie at the nail place and we got settled into our chairs after we'd picked out our polishes and had a terrific time being pampered and making jokes and laughing and talking about our lives. There were only a few other people in the salon and I could not help but wonder what they were thinking. If I'd been in their place, I would have been avidly eavesdropping. I did notice the one man in the salon looking over from his chair with interest when we began discussing gardening issues.
I would show you my feet but they just look weird and not entirely beautiful although my nails are. My feet look like a country woman's feet with ant bites and scratches and a healing blister. I chose my default color, the one I almost always get, an OPI color entitled "I'm Not Really A Waitress."

I grabbed that picture off the internet and no, I did not get my fingernails polished. What would be the point? It would last approximately ten minutes. I've been wearing this same color for at least twenty years and thank you, OPI, for not discontinuing it. Other colors may come close to it, but it is the one and only true original for me.

Then we went to lunch at the restaurant where Jessie and Lily get the Brussels Sprouts that I am always bitching about because they stink up the whole restaurant. Honestly, by now I would be SO disappointed if they didn't get them. It is part of the ritual. I got my regular Asian salad with ahi which I love but today the tuna just did not taste the same and I ended up not eating it. What a waste! But it wasn't quite right. Ah well, the rest of the salad had plenty of other delicious things in it and I did not suffer.

Here's the requisite after-dining picture.

Don't you love Lauren's shirt?

We had so much fun at lunch. Nobody makes me laugh like my kids and as I've always said, they are my greatest teachers and I find myself at the age of 69 still learning from them every time we're together. Lauren is a bit quieter but that is just her way. And when she does talk, she has something to say, that one.

After lunch I decided to go to Petco and get some cat dewormer. You do not need to know the basis for this decision but let me assure you that I DO have a basis and it was gross.
And right next door to Petco is a Beall's outlet or maybe it's just a Beall's. Who knows? But I decided to go in there to check out their collection of flip flops and while I was there I perused the dress section. Now let me say that Beall's does not carry the highest quality clothing. But it's always worth a look-around, right? And I have not been clothing shopping in an actual retail store in...
Oh. Who knows?
I went through all the dress offerings and ended up buying one very simple sundress with pockets and I like it fine. It didn't cost much, either. But after about twenty minutes of that, I had to get out of there. They sell all sorts of scented crap and I can't handle that and although there were only a few people in the store, it was too much stimulation for me.

And THEN I got gas at Costco because, as I told Mr. Moon yesterday when we were on our way to the river, I was almost out of gas. I panic when my gas gauge gets down to a quarter of a tank which in my car, would probably get me to Jacksonville and back. But- better safe than sorry, right?

After that, I came home and rushed around doing all the little chores that I had not done all day which was gratifying. I've got a pot of spaghetti sauce simmering on the stove and hopefully, tonight's supper will be served before 8:30 which is about when last night's supper hit the table.
Hey! It was worth the wait!

So that's been my day here in Lloyd and in Tallahassee. I am wearing my new dress. I asked Mr. Moon if he liked it and he said he did and I told him that he could borrow it if he wanted to.
"No thanks," he said.
"Well, think about it," I told him.
"I did," he said and we both laughed.
Unfortunately, he does not have the same opinion as our grandson August when it comes to supposedly gender-appropriate clothing. Remember when I used to make August dresses? And then Levon too? They saw the dresses that I made Maggie and they wanted some. I loved that.

And that is enough for today. And far more.

Love...Ms. Moon

  2. oh that first day of school.....and they all look so prepared and *sort of* ready? That color red polish is divine......about every 5 yrs I paint my toenails....and THAT is the color. Never the fingers....EVER. WHY? Your day was lovely with fam and shopping. Mine.....oh..... yesterday caught rattlesnake in a RAT TRAP under house. WTH? still VERY alive and I COULD NOT deal.....thankfully nearest neighbor came over, made off with its head.....and it became a meal for their resident blind educational red shouldered hawk (they are predator rehabilitators). Then on top of that.....today we had an earthquake...... crapola. I grew up in Calif. and am used to them...but they scare the shit out of me every time. and do I like them? NOT on your life. You just never know if it will stop......or NOT. 4.7 mag. and lasted about 4-5 seconds......but it darned near got me off my butt and racing for an exit! SHIT!

    1. Honey, that was an extremely stressful day! From a rattlesnake in a rat trap to an earthquake? I am so glad you're okay. And thank goodness for neighbors who will come to your aid when needed. Do you remember awhile back when Mr. Moon killed the rattler about six feet from our back steps? With both August and Levon there! Ugh.

    1. Well, your countdown has certainly begun. Do you get a little excited every year or not?

  4. The grands going back to school. Another season, another year and time marches on...indeed it does.
Love the nail polish. Love the name of it! I'd like that job where I could sit around and dream up names of nail polish and lipstick. I've got some doozies!
    I also loved Lauren's t-shirt. I agree with it...except when I'm around Republicans! LOL!
Where does this Susan M live? Rattlesnakes and earthquakes. Sweet Jesus! I might get religious. Second thought...no.

    1. Lauren said that one time when she was wearing that shirt, a woman came up and hugged her. She'd needed to hear that message.
Check out OPI's product names. They will crack you up. I'd like to hear yours!
On the religion thing- what kind of a god would be flinging rattlesnakes around and allowing earthquakes? Not one that I'd look to for protection.

    1. He IS getting so grown up! I loved it when August and Levon wanted dresses. I made them some very cool flannel dresses for winter. I have a video of August playing fiddle wearing one. I love it so much.

    1. Amen! I'll never forget when I made Maggie a dress and August a pair of shorts and I could tell his little heart hurt and I asked him if wanted me to make him a dress too. YES! So much. And of course I did. It was a joy.

  8. It seems a bit weird to start school on a Thursday, they get two days and wham! there's a weekend already. And wearing flip-flops! That's not allowed in Australia. Children here must wear closed in shoes at school, it's a safety issue and several years ago another safety rule was made regarding sunhats in summer, kids must have them on when they go out to play for recess and lunchtimes.
All of them look happy to be going back to school and I hope they all do well.
I'm glad you found a nice sundress with pockets.

    1. I've been wondering about the wisdom of starting school on a Thursday too but I guess in a way it's good. They go for two days and then have two days to process it all.
I'm not surprised about the no flip-flops rule in your schools. I'm sort of surprised that our schools allow them. But the sun hats is a new one to me and one that we should adopt!
This dress is pretty cool. I mean that literally.

  9. You are starting a new school year and before long we will be winding down our old school year. Your lack of school uniforms is interesting. Very few schools here do not have a uniform of sorts. The more expensive the school, the more elaborate the uniform but even our state (so called free) schools have uniforms.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nope. Only private (and then generally only religious) schools around here require uniforms. I see the purpose of them but there are a lot of families who probably couldn't afford them. I also like it that kids can wear the clothes that make them comfortable and that please them. Within limits, of course.

  10. I was surprised to see the little ones going to school in flip flops....like in Australia, all our schools here have uniform and kids wear " proper" shoes. One of our local secondary schools (St George's.... years 7-13) is partly a boarding /private school and the blazers are tweed ( woollen) and I believe they cost over £100 !! The blazers my boys wore to their school in the same town ( over 30 years ago) cost about £25 and were polyester...much more sensible!

    1. Polyester uniforms here would end up being torture to the kids. Too hot! I guess if you can't afford the tweed blazer at St. George's, you can't afford the school, either!

    2. It is mainly a " state" school....ie free! One of the 4 secondary schools in our town , but I guess if you can't afford the uniform you wouldn't apply to go there. There are many well off people around here. though, present writer excepted !

  11. What a lovely day you had!!! I'm going to get my claws reshaped (manicure) and a pedicure on Monday but ONLY because I want to support the young woman who has set up a mobile beautician's in the dinkiest little caravan (with the aid of a grant from the village). My hands look like they belong to a fish wife so I won't be getting polish and drawing attention to them, but we'll see if she needs the overtime anyway!

  13. Fortunately younger people seem not nearly as hung up on gender as we older folks. I think the expectation that pink is for girls has subsided a lot, too. (Although now that I think about it, I'm not sure I've seen many boys wearing pink at our school. Maybe I just haven't been paying attention!)

The one time I polished one of my toenails -- to take a photo with some friends -- it was with "I'm Not Really a Waitress." LOL

    1. Oh, actually, one of my co-worker's sons, about August's age, likes pink and unicorns and he went through a dress-wearing period, too. So there you go! (He's also obsessed with dinosaurs.)

      Delete
    2. Sounds like your co-worker's son could be a good friend to August. Preppy boys have always worn pink shirts. Or at least they used to. And pink on the golf course is appropriate for guys, I think. I don't know. We should start a "Real Men Wear Pink" movement.

  14. Oh my goodness, a BIG day, with Levon starting kindergarten (aka "real" school) and Gibson starting middle school and the other three ready to run the show. Owen is getting so tall, August, too; they take after their Boppy methinks. I'm all misty at this ritual of school starting again, how well I remember those days. Looks like you had a blast with your girls.

    1. Yes. Gibson has really shot up this year and he may be shaving before Owen- he has inherited his dad's Italian genes. But yes, he's got his Boppy's height genes. I think Owen's already as tall as his daddy.
I had such a good time with those women! You know.

  15. I love the nail polish colour but I've never had a pedicure. They don't appeal to me, allow the visiting and chatting with daughters does appeal to me:)
Your grandkids all look so good, going back to school and I imagine their mothers are happy too. Our kids don't go back until Sept. 4th but they also go to school until the end of June.

  16. Wait, school is starting? I am SO out of the loop. The nail polish is so you. Rachel and I are in our quasi-tree house for our silent retreat which is about to start. Beautiful trees all around us. I will see my family soon for Eden's nuptials. My family is the best. Milo and I are traveling together in October and I can hardly wait. He is truly the apple of my eye.
